Athletes of the Week for January 22, 2019

Women’s Basketball

Janean Cuffee — NYU  —  New York, NY (The Lawrenceville School)

NYU sophomore guard Janean Cuffee averaged 27.5 points in two UAA contests, including a career-high 28 points in a loss to Washington University on Friday. On Sunday she scored 27 points, including the go-ahead basket with two minutes left in overtime and sealed the win with two free throws with three seconds remaining, as the Violets upset 13th-ranked University of Chicago, 66-62. Cuffee hit seven of 10 field goals and netted 18 points in the Violets’ 102-54 victory over York College-The City University of New York on Monday.

Men’s Basketball

Ryan Clamage — University of Rochester  —  Lake Forest, IL (Lake Forest Academy)

Senior guard Ryan Clamage averaged 30.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game as University of Rochester posted home wins over Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University. He tallied a career-high 41 points on Friday in the Yellowjackets’ 78-70 win over the Tartans and finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and four steals in an 81-68 victory over the Spartans. Clamage shot 60.0 percent (24-for-40) from the field and 78.6 percent from the free throw line (11-of-14) in the two games.

Women’s Fencing

Anastasiya Muravyeva — NYU  —  Fair Lawn, NJ (Fair Lawn)

Senior Anastasiya Muravyeva was the top NYU competitor at the University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia Invitational. She posted a 14-10 record in the foil against a strong field.

Men’s Fencing

Zohaib Mannan — NYU  —  Short Hills, NJ (Millburn)

Sophomore Zohaib Mannan recorded 20 wins, against only four losses, in the foil in nine matches over the weekend. The Violets won three matches against strong competition at the University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia Invitational.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Rachel Reistroffer — NYU  —  Spartanburg, SC (Dorman)

NYU first-year swimmer Rachel Reistroffer provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a double dual hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She won the event in a time of 17:33.33 as the Violets split against the seventh-ranked hosts and sixth-ranked Williams College.

Carmen White — NYU  —  Lake Bluff, IL (Lake Forest)

NYU junior Carmen White won the three-meter dive (295.85 points) as NYU split a double-dual against sixth-ranked Williams College and seventh-ranked host Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She added a third-place finish on the one-meter board (267.00).

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Brandon Lum — Washington University  —  Ventura, CA (Ventura)

Senior Brandon Lum claimed first-place finishes in both butterfly events in a Washington University win over NCAA Division II Truman State University. He won the 100 fly in 50.49 seconds and the 200 in 1:49.57. Lum teamed with Jerry Chen, Matthew Yang, and Preston Bailey for a victory in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.56.

Lucas Bumgarner — Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)

Freshman diver Lucas Bumgarner won one event and earned a runner-up finish in another in an Emory University dual meet against NCAA Division II Delta State University. He eclipsed the NCAA Division III regional diving standard with a mark of 309.80 in winning the one-meter event. Bumgarner placed second on the three-meter board with a score of 282.80.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Jac Guerra — Brandeis University  —  Guilford, CT (Guilford)

Brandeis University first-year runner Jac Guerra finished second in the mile run at the Bowdoin Invitational II. His time of 5:07.32 converts to the seventh-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season.

Rebekah Bondi — Emory University  —  Collegeville, PA (Perkiomen Valley)

Emory University sophomore Rebekah Bondi placed second in the long jump at the Eagles’ Crossplex Invitational. She posted a season-best mark of 5.31 meters, and competed in the high jump (1.35 meters), shot put (7.42 meters), 60-meter hurdles (10.01 seconds), and 800-meter run (2:47.42). The Eagles finished second behind only NCAA Division I Troy University.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Jack Whetstone — Emory University  —  Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)

Sophomore Jack Whetstone of Emory University set the meet record in the 5,000-meter run at the Eagles’ Crossplex Invitational on Sunday. His time of 15:01.67 was a personal-best and ranks 18th in NCAA Division III this season.

Connor Kamp — Emory University  —  Haddonfield, NJ (Randolph)

Freshman Connor Kamp of Emory University recorded a season-best long jump mark of 6.18 meters at the Eagles’ Crossplex Invitational. He also competed in the 60-meter dash (7.64 seconds) and 200-meter dash (24.76 seconds).

Wrestling

Sean Lyons — NYU  —  Sewell, NJ (St. Joseph’s Prep)

Junior Sean Lyons earned a pair of bonus-point victories as NYU swept two dual matches over the weekend. The 149-pounder won via technical fall (17-1) on Friday in a 23-18 victory over Centenary University. On Saturday, he trailed his Hunter College opponent 15-8 in the third period before taking control of the match and pinning his opponent.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
