Athletes of the Week for January 28, 2019

Women’s Basketball

Ashley Oldshue — Emory University  —  Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)

Senior center Ashley Oldshue averaged 22.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game, shooting 63.0 percent (17-for-27) from the field in a 2-0 weekend for Emory University. She scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed a season-high 15 boards in the Eagles’ 70-57 win over Brandeis University on Friday, and then posted another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in a 70-49 victory over NYU on Sunday. Oldshue shot 84.6 percent from the free throw line (11-of-13) in the two contests.

Rachael Sondag — Washington University  —  Webster Groves, MO (Webster Groves)

Senior guard Rachael Sondag averaged 19 points per game and became the Washington University all-time leader in three-point field goals as the Bears won two games to finish the first half of the UAA schedule undefeated. She hit 12 three-pointers, shooting 60.0 percent from long range, in wins over Carnegie Mellon (87-64) on Friday and Case Western Reserve University (82-79) on Sunday. Sondag hit five 3-pointers in the second half to lead the Bears back from an 11-point deficit against the Spartans.

Men’s Basketball

Eric D’Aguanno — Brandeis University  —  Saunderstown, RI (St. Andrew’s School)

Brandeis University junior Eric D’Aguanno scored 21 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds to help the Judges earn their first win in Rochester since 2010 with a 75-69 victory on Sunday. In the Judges’ 1-1 weekend, he shot 60.0 percent from the field (12-for-20) and 64.7 percent from three-point range (11-of-17).

Women’s Fencing

Joanne Carminucci — Brandeis University  —  Brewster, NY (North Salem)

Brandeis University senior Joanne Carminucci finished with a perfect 12-0 mark as the Judges won four of six matches at the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season. She led the foil squad to a 5-1 record with 3-0 marks against Brown University, Boston College, and Vassar College, while earning a 2-0 record against Dartmouth College and 1-0 against Tufts University.

Men’s Fencing

Leon Rotenstein — Brandeis University  —  Ashland, MA (Ashland)

Brandeis University senior Leon Rotenstein finished 11-1 overall to lead the Judges to a 4-2 record at the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season. He helped lead the sabre squad to a 6-0 record. Rotenstein finished 3-0 against Brown University, Vassar College, and Tufts University with a 2-1 mark against Boston College. The Judges finished second to Boston College.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Julia Durmer — Emory University  —  Decatur, GA (St. Pius Catholic)

Senior Julia Durmer won three individual events to lead Emory University to a “Senior Day” win over Centre College on Saturday. She won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:25.62), 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.79), and 200-yard individual medley (2:09.69).

Elizabeth Cron — University of Chicago  —  Cincinnati, OH (Oak Hills)

First-year diver Elizabeth Cron broke the University of Chicago record on the three-meter board with a score of 308.32 in the Maroons’ wins over Calvin College and DePauw University. She surpassed the NCAA Division III Diving Zone qualifying mark in both events, posting a score of 291.15 in the one-meter event.

Elizabeth Davidson — Washington University  —  West Des Moines, IA (Valley)

Sophomore Elizabeth Davidson of Washington University recorded two runner-up finishes against NCAA Division I Illinois State University. She recorded a score of 223.40 in the three-meter event and 209.05 on the one-meter board.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Kevin Van Cleave — Washington University  —  Elm Grove, WI (Brookfield Academy)

Washington University senior Kevin Van Cleave provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.10 seconds in the Bears’ dual meet win over Wabash College. He also earned a victory in the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.03) and helped the 400-yard freestyle relay to a win in 3:09.67.

Cassiel Yuzik — Case Western Reserve University  —  Kent, OH (Theodore Roosevelt)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Cassiel Yuzik swept the diving events in the Spartans’ win at Ohio Northern University on Saturday. He won the one-meter board with a score of 215.70 and claimed the title in the three-meter dive with a score of 226.45.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Emily Bryson — Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Senior Emily Bryson ran the fastest NCAA Division III mile this season at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday. She finished third overall behind runners from NCAA Division I Syracuse University and University of New Hampshire with a time of 4:49.68. Bryson’s converted time is two seconds faster than the next fastest time this season.

Eka Jose — Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)

Sophomore Eka Jose won three individual events, including nearly matching her NCAA Division III-leading triple jump mark, to help lead Washington University to the Titan Open Invitational title. In addition to capturing the triple jump (12.26 meters), she won the long jump (5.78 meters) with the third-best distance nationally and ran the 17th-fastest time in Division III this year in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.86 seconds.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Nick Matteucci — Washington University  —  Des Peres, MO (Parkway South)

Washington University junior Nick Matteucci posted the NCAA Division III’s second-fastest time in the mile this season to help lead Washington University to the Titan Open Invitational title. His time of 4:11.58 was converted to 4:08.41 (for track size). Matteucci also ran to a runner-up finish in the 800-meter run with a converted time of 1:54.68, which ranks 20th in Division III this season.

Alexander Scott — University of Chicago  —  Plover, WI (Stevens Point Area)

University of Chicago junior Alexander Scott finished second in the shot put at the Leonard “Squig” Converse Invitational at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. His throw of 15.80 meters ranks 12th in NCAA Division III this season.

Wrestling

Evan Drill — NYU  —  Neshanic Station, NJ (Somerville)

NYU junior Evan Drill swept both his matches on Saturday against second-ranked Johnson & Wales University and University of Southern Maine. He earned a victory over a two-time All-American from Johnson & Wales, a 3-1 decision.

Kyle Peisker — University of Chicago  —  Elk Grove, IL (Conant)

University of Chicago junior Kyle Peisker earned a runner-up finish at 174 pounds at the Wheaton College Pete Willson Invitational, the oldest and largest small-college tournament in the country. He finished 4-1 overall on the weekend, posting two decisions, a major decision, and a fall to advance to the championship match. The Maroons finished 15th in the field that included 11 nationally ranked squads and more than 260 wrestlers.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
