Athletes of the Week for February 11, 2019

Women’s Basketball

Ashley Oldshue — Emory University  —  Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)

Senior center Ashley Oldshue averaged 20.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game to lead Emory University to back-to-back wins over nationally ranked opponents. She hit 10 of 15 field goals and scored 14 of her 21 points in the second half as the Eagles handed 21st-ranked Washington University its first UAA loss of the season, 75-66, on Friday. Oldshue totaled 20 points, 13 rebounds, and matched her career-high with six blocked shots in a 60-57 victory over 17th-ranked University of Chicago. She hit seven of 10 field goals and became the program’s single-season leader in blocks (48), bettering the previous mark of 43 set by her head coach Misha Jackson (2012-13). For the weekend, Oldshue shot 68.0 percent from the floor (17-of-25) and 75.0 percent from the free throw line (6-for-8).

Men’s Basketball

Romin Williams — Emory University  —  Harvey, LA (Metairie Park Country Day)

Sophomore guard Romin Williams averaged 29.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists as Emory University split two home games. He scored a game-high 31 points, hitting five 3-pointers and connecting of 11 of 19 field goals, in a 105-82 win over Washington University, snapping the Bears’ seven-game winning streak. Williams followed that effort with a game-high 27 points, hitting six 3-pointers, in the Eagles’ 114-107 loss to University of Chicago. He shot 51.2 percent from the field (21-for-41), 44.0 percent from the three-point range (11-of-25), and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (5-for-6).

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Hannah Baratz — Emory University  —  Rochester, MN (Mayo Senior)

Senior Hannah Baratz of Emory University provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in the 100-yard backstroke at the Auburn University Invitational. She posted an NCAA “B” cut time of 56.35 seconds in the 100 back, while narrowly missing the “B” mark in the 50-yard freestyle (24.09 seconds) and as part of the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.68).

Carmen White — NYU  —  Lake Bluff, IL (Lake Forest)

Junior Carmen White won both diving events as the Violets hosted the NYU Invitational on Friday and Saturday. She won the one-meter event with a score of 310.65 points and the three-meter board with a mark of 320.50 points.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Calvin Furbee — Emory University  —  Columbus, OH (Grandview)

Freshman Calvin Furbee of Emory University provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship in the 200-yard butterfly at the Auburn University Invitational. He posted a time of 1:50.70 and added times of 4:37.14 in the 500-yard freestyle and 50.48 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly.

Cole Vertin — NYU  —  San Jose, CA (Saint Francis)

Freshman Cole Vertin won both diving events as the Violets hosted the NYU Invitational on Friday and Saturday. He captured the one-meter dive with a score of 314.60 points and the three-meter event with a mark of 336.95 points.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Emily Bryson — Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Brandeis University senior Emily Bryson lowered her season-best and NCAA Division III-leading time in the mile run to 4:48.36 at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Classic. She also anchored the third-fastest time (11:50.34) in the distance medley relay with sister Julia Bryson, rookie Devin Hiltunen, and senior Doyin Ogundiran.

Cassandra Laios — Case Western Reserve University  —  Worthington, OH (Thomas Worthington)

Case Western Reserve University graduate student Cassandra Laios bettered her own program record in the weight throw and also won the shot put at the All-Ohio Indoor Championships on Saturday in Westerville, Ohio. She claimed the title in the weight throw with a toss of 18.05 meters, which ranks fourth in NCAA Division III this season, and placed first in the shot put with her heave of 13.09 meters.

Heidi Nassos — Washington University  —  Wheaton, IL (Wheaton Warrenville South)

Washington University senior Heidi Nassos helped lead the Bears to the team title at the nationally competitive Midwest Elite Invitational in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Her height of 3.83 meters in the pole vault would have ranked third in NCAA Division III this season if she did not already claim that ranking with her leap of 3.85 meters last week. The field consisted of six U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association top-25 teams.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Malcolm Montilus — NYU  —  Mendham, NJ (West Morris Mendham)

Competing at the multi-division Boston University David Hemery Valentine Classic, NYU senior Malcolm Montilus ran a career-best time in the 400-meter run. His time of 48.02 in the 192-runner field ranks fourth in NCAA Division III this season. Montilus ran the third leg of the Violets’ 1,600-meter relay that recorded a season-best time of 3:19.82.

Bram Miller — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Colgate, WI (Kettle Moraine Lutheran)

Sophomore Bram Miller of Carnegie Mellon University recorded two personal-best marks to help lead the Tartans to a third consecutive meet title, competing at the Noke Elite Meet hosted by Roanoke College on Saturday.  He won the shot put with a mark of 16.02 meters, which ranks 14th in NCAA Division III this season, and registered a throw of 12.88 meters in the weighty throw.

Wrestling

Evan Drill — NYU  —  Neshanic Station, NJ (Somerville)

NYU junior Evan Drill was named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the UAA Wrestling championship, hosted by Case Western Reserve University on Saturday. The returning All-American won both his matches at 141 pounds, one via decision (10-3) and another by fall (4:43). 

Women’s Tennis

Marjorie Antohi — University of Chicago  —  El Paso, TX (Coronado)

University of Chicago junior Marjorie Antohi finished a perfect 4-0 combined between No. 1 singles and third doubles in two Maroons’ wins. She earned a shutout singles victory against DePauw University and earned a three-set victory over her Denison University opponent. With her usual doubles partner unable to compete over the weekend, Antohi played with two different partners in garnering an 8-5 win over DePauw and an 8-3 triumph over Denison.

Men’s Tennis

Masaru Fujimaki — University of Rochester  —  Shanghai, China (Shanghai International)

Senior Masaru Fujimaki finished a combined 4-0 at No. 1 singles and first doubles to lead University of Rochester to 5-4 wins over 26th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Vassar College. Against RPI, he teamed with Runjia Fang to top a regionally ranked duo before posting a straight-set win in singles over a nationally ranked opponent. Fujimaki, who joined with Fang for an 8-3 doubles win against Vassar, topped his singles opponent, 6-2, 6-3.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
