Athletes of the Week for February 26, 2018
Women’s Basketball
Mia Farrell — University of Chicago — Bolingbrook, IL (Joliet Catholic)
Sophomore guard Mia Farrell poured in a career-high 31 points to lead University of Chicago to a 96-90 win over Washington University to secure a 14-0 record in UAA competition. She connected on six of 11 field goals, including 4-for-8 from three-point range, and made 15 of 18 free throws. Farrell added five rebounds for the Maroons, who enter the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship on a game-winning 21-game winning streak.
Men’s Basketball
Jake Fenlon — University of Chicago — Rochester, NY (McQuaid Jesuit)
Senior guard Jake Fenlon tied his season-high with 31 points as University of Chicago handed second-ranked Washington University its only loss of the UAA season, 86-77. He shot 50.0 percent from the floor (9-for-18) and his six 3-pointers gave him a program record 100 for the season, bettering his own mark of 76.
Women’s Fencing
Madeleine Vibert — Brandeis University — Las Vegas, NV (West Career and Tech Academy)
Brandeis University first-year fencer Madeleine Vibert recorded a team-high 10 wins in the foil at the Fairleigh Dickinson University Invitational on Sunday. She finished 3-0 against Wagner College, 2-0 versus Long Island University, and 2-1 against Johns Hopkins University and Drew University. Vibert added a win in the Judges’ 17-10 victory over FDU, one of three team wins on the day.
Men’s Fencing
Alek Broszkowski — Brandeis University — Haworth, NJ (Northern Valley Regional)
Brandeis University first-year fencer Alek Broszkowski earned a silver medal in the individual foil at the NEIFC Championship meet at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday. He earned the second seed after posting a 4-1 mark in pool play then recorded a 15-9 quarterfinal win, a 15-10 semifinal win over sophomore teammate Sam Chestna, and a 15-10 title victory over his Vassar College opponent. Broszkowski also helped the foil squad earn the team’s only weapon title on number of touches after tying Sacred Heart University.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Suhan Mestha — Case Western Reserve University — Fairport, NY (Fairport)
Case Western Reserve University junior Suhan Mestha provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in winning the 50-yard freestyle at the Midwest Invitational at University of Chicago. She recorded a time of 23.56 seconds in the event and also swam on the Spartans’ NCAA “B” cut 200-yard medley relay that finished in a program record time of 1:45.07.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Winston Chu — Carnegie Mellon University — Warren, NJ (Saint Peter’s Prep)
Carnegie Mellon University junior Winston Chu provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Kenyon College Fast Chance Meet. He posted a time of 55.64 seconds, which ranks 17th in NCAA Division III this season.
Wrestling
Matt Noble — NYU — Bridgewater, NJ (DePaul Catholic)
NYU sophomore Matt Noble won the 133-pound title at the 2018 NCAA Division III Wrestling Northeast Regional at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday and Sunday. He won all four of his matches, defeating the sixth-ranked grappler in Division III from Johnson & Wales University, 8-7, in the championship bout.
Softball
Jacqueline Spizizen — Emory University — West Bloomfield, MI (Country Day)
Emory University first-year pitcher Jacqueline Spizizen earned a win and a save in the Eagles’ doubleheader sweep of Covenant College. She tossed three innings of scoreless relief, striking out six, to earn the victory in a 5-1 Eagles’ win. Spizizen pitched the final 1.1 innings without allowing a hit and fanning two, to earn the save in a 2-0 win in the second game.
Women’s Tennis
Nithya Kanagasegar — Case Western Reserve University — Crossville, TN (Cumberland County)
Senior Nithya Kanagasegar finished a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles to lead 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve University to two road wins. She teamed with rookie Madeleine Paolucci for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and then earned a 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 victory at first singles in the Spartans’ 7-2 win over 21st-ranked Hope College. Kanagasegar won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Paolucci for an 8-5 victory at first doubles in an 8-1 win over Kalamazoo College.
Grace Deering — Washington University — Charlotte, NC (Charlotte Catholic)
Senior Grace Deering of Washington University posted a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles as the Bears defeated Coe College and 39th-ranked Carleton College. She teamed with rookie Ally Persky for a pair of 8-2 wins at No. 1 doubles. Deering did not drop a set in earning back-to-back victories at first singles.
Men’s Tennis
Hayden Cassone — Emory University — Salem, NY (John Jay)
Freshman Hayden Cassone won all three of his singles matches and two doubles matches to help Emory University to its third consecutive ITA National Indoor Men’s Team Championship title, winning each match 5-4. His 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 decision at No. 4 singles evened the match with host and 16th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus University on Friday. The following day, Cassone won 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the clinching match over Jeremy Yuan in the Eagles’ victory over University of Chicago. On Sunday, he and junior Jonathan Jemison earned the team’s only doubles point and then his 6-3, 6-2 win started the Eagles’ comeback from a 4-1 deficit against second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a rematch of last year’s NCAA championship final.
Luke Tsai — University of Chicago — Mason, OH (Mason)
Senior Luke Tsai of University of Chicago earned three more wins against top-10 ranked UAA teams at No. 2 singles to lead the Maroons to a third-place finish at the ITA National Indoor Men’s Team Championship. He defeated Chaz Downing of 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University, 7-5, 6-0, in a 6-3 Chicago victory. In the semifinals, Tsai came back to defeat Alec Josepher of top-ranked Emory University, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. He helped the Maroons to a 5-4 win over sixth-ranked rival Washington University on Sunday with a straight-set victory over Benjamin van der Sman. Tsai upped his winning streak to 16 matches.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
