Athletes of the Week for March 12, 2018
Women’s Basketball
Lauren Deming — University of Rochester — Waterloo, NY (Waterloo)
Senior forward Lauren Deming averaged 16.0 points and 8.5 rebounds as University of Rochester advanced to the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship quarterfinals. She tallied 17 points and nine boards in a 59-55 sectional semifinal win over local rival Rochester Institute of Technology. In the sectional final loss to host Amherst College, Deming led the Yellowjackets with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Men’s Basketball
Whitt Rapp — Emory University — Noblesville, IN (Guerin Catholic)
Senior guard Whitt Rapp recorded 15 points, 11 assists, and five rebounds in a 93-72 Emory University loss to University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the sectional semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship. He finished his career with program records of 629 assists and 6.0 assists per game.
Women’s Fencing
Joanne Carminucci — Brandeis University — Brewster, NY (North Salem)
Brandeis University junior Joanne Carminucci finished in eighth place in the foil at the NCAA Northeast Fencing Regionals hosted by the Judges on Sunday. Seeded 17th, she posted a 4-2 record in the round of 35 to reach the semifinals, where she topped two opponents from Harvard University among her four victories. Carminucci finished 5-6 in the final 12 to earn her eighth-place finish.
Men’s Fencing
Grant Williams — NYU — Atlanta, GA (The Galloway School)
NYU sophomore Grant Williams captured the sabre gold medal at the NCAA Northeast Fencing Regionals at Brandeis University on Sunday. He went undefeated in pool play before topping a U.S. Olympian from Harvard University in the title match. Williams qualified for the NCAA Fencing Championships Mar. 22-25 at Penn State University.
Women’s Indoor Track and Field
Emily Bryson — Brandeis University — Quincy, MA (North Quincy)
Junior Emily Bryson became the first Brandeis University track and field individual champion since 1997 when she won the 3,000-meter run at the NCAA Division III Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship. Her winning time of 9:33.99 was the ninth-fastest in Division III history and broke the school mark by nearly six seconds, the same as her margin of victory. Bryson also ran on the third-place distance medley relay to become the first Brandeis woman to earn multiple All-America honors at the same meet since 2003.
Laura Darcey — University of Chicago — Teddington, England (The Lady Eleanor Holles School)
Sophomore Laura Darcey of University of Chicago earned a pair of All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship. She placed fifth in the high jump with a personal best mark of 1.68 meters and finished sixth in the pentathlon with a program-record 3,487 points.
Men’s Indoor Track and Field
Joe Previdi — University of Chicago — Philadelphia, PA (Masterman School)
University of Chicago sophomore Joe Previdi placed second in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Division III Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship to earn All-America honors. His time of 1:51.83 broke his own school record and left him just .03 seconds from first place in a photo finish.
Ethan Broduer — Washington University — Naperville, IL (Naperville Central)
John Harry Wagner — Washington University — St. Louis, MO (John Burroughs)
Thomas Gales — Washington University — Granger, IN (Penn)
Nick Matteucci — Washington University — Des Peres, MO (Parkway South)
Graduate student Ethan Brodeur, freshman John Harry Wagner, senior Thomas Gales, and sophomore Nick Matteucci finished second in the distance medley relay at the NCAA Division III Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship. The squad posted a time of 9:57.81, using a late kick by Matteucci to edge ahead of Middlebury College for second place.
Nathan Downey — University of Chicago — Orinda, CA (Miramonte)
University of Chicago senior Nathan Downey earned All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship. He recorded a mark of 4.90 meters.
Wrestling
Evan Drill — NYU — Neshanic Station, NJ (Somerville)
Sophomore Evan Drill of NYU earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship in Cleveland, Ohio. The unseeded 149-pounder defeated the second, fourth, and fifth seeds to place fourth.
Baseball
Ryan McLaughlin — NYU — Basking Ridge, NJ (Delbarton)
NYU junior Ryan McLaughlin batted .600 (6-for-10) with eight runs scored, three runs batted in, and three stolen bases in a 3-0 week for the Violets. He scored at least two runs in each game and added four walks for a .733 on-base percentage. McLaughlin recorded a .700 slugging percentage in the three games.
John Brinkman — Washington University — Worden, IL (St. Louis University HS)
Washington University sophomore John Brinkman batted .700 (7-for-10) with two runs scored, three doubles, and three runs batted in as the Bears split two games. He finished 4-for-5 with two doubles in a 5-4 win over 21st-ranked Wheaton College (MA) and added three hits against The College of St. Scholastica.
Mason Newman — Brandeis University — New Rochelle, NY (New Rochelle)
Brandeis University freshman Mason Newman did not allow a run in five innings of relief in two appearances. He threw 4.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk, while striking out seven to earn the win in the Judges’ 8-3 victory over Bowdoin College.
Mark Gross — Case Western Reserve University — Butler, PA (Butler Area Senior)
Case Western Reserve University junior Mark Gross tossed 8.2 innings of six-hit ball, allowing just one earned run, to earn the victory in the Spartans’ 3-2 win over fifth-ranked State University of New York at Cortland. He walked just one batter and fanned six.
Softball
Hera Tang — Washington University — Saratoga, CA (Saratoga)
Senior infielder Hera Tang of Washington University finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored, a double, and one run batted in as Washington University split two games. She recorded three hits and scored twice in the Bears’ 11-2 victory over 16th-ranked Ithaca College.
Anna McKee — Washington University — St. Louis, MO (Visitation Academy)
Senior pitcher Anna McKee tossed a complete game, yielding just four hits and one earned run, in an
11-2 Washington University win over 16th-ranked Ithaca College. She did not walk a batter and struck out five to earn the victory.
Women’s Tennis
Lauren Bertsch — Brandeis University — Middletown, RI (La Salle Academy)
Brandeis University first-year player Lauren Bertsch posted a 3-1 combined record in singles and doubles against nationally ranked opponents. She earned a 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 win at No. 4 singles in the Judges’ loss to 21st-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In a 6-3 victory over 25th-ranked Wellesley College, she teamed with Keren Khromchenko to win 8-4 at second doubles and took No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
Men’s Tennis
Daniel Levine — Carnegie Mellon University — Highland Park, IL (Boca Prep International School)
Carnegie Mellon University junior Daniel Levine won all four of his matches to lead the Tartans to a pair of wins, including the program’s first win over UAA rival Washington University. He teamed with Chaz Downing for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles in a 9-0 victory over Whittier College and for an 8-7 (7-4) win as the Tartans edged the Bears, 5-4. He did drop a set at first singles, losing a total of eight games in four sets.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
