Athletes of the Week for April 23, 2018
Baseball
Colman Hendershot — NYU — Lubbock, TX (Coronado)
NYU junior Colman Hendershot hit six home runs and drove in 15 runs to lead the Violets to four wins in five games. He batted .565 (13-for-23), recording at least two hits in each game. Hendershot hit home runs in three consecutive at-bats, finishing with seven runs batted in, in the Violets’ 12-7 UAA win over Brandeis University on Friday. He scored 10 runs, doubled twice, and registered a 1.435 slugging percentage.
John Howard — Washington University — St. Louis, MO (Clayton)
Washington University junior John Howard allowed just one run in eight innings as the Bears opened their series against 10th-ranked Case Western Reserve University with a 6-1 win. He surrendered six hits, walked one batter, and struck out seven. Howard moved to 5-3 with a 0.99 earned run average.
Women’s Golf
Lavonca Davis — Carnegie Mellon University — Pickerington, OH (Pickerington)
Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Lavonca Davis earned her second career individual medalist honors at the Grove City College Spring Invitational on Saturday. She carded a season-best round of 79, which marked her third-lowest of 33 career rounds.
Softball
Maren Waldner — Case Western Reserve University — Redondo Beach, CA (Chadwick)
Senior Maren Waldner batted .538 (7-for-13) with three runs scored, a home run, and five runs batted in as Case Western Reserve University won three of four UAA games against Washington University. She recorded multiple hits in all three Spartan wins, including a 3-for-4 effort with a two-run home run in an 11-3 victory in the opening game on Saturday.
Ilissa Hamilton — Case Western Reserve University — South Abington Township, PA (Scranton Prep)
Case Western Reserve University sophomore Ilissa Hamilton posted a 2-0 record with a pair of complete game wins as the Spartans won three of four games against Washington University. She allowed just two hits and struck out 10 batters in a 2-1 Spartans’ win in the series opener and then fanned 11 in six innings of a six-inning, 11-3 victory in the first game on Saturday.
Women’s Tennis
Coco Kulle — NYU — Vienna, Austria (Choate Rosemary Hall, CT)
Sophomore Coco Kulle earned a pair of wins as 21st-ranked NYU defeated 17th-ranked Skidmore College 7-2 on Sunday. She teamed with Anna Maria Buraya for an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles and then posted a 7-6, 6-3 victory at first singles.
Men’s Tennis
Zach Cihlar — Brandeis University — Phoenix, AZ (Brophy Prep)
Junior Zach Cihlar finished 3-0 combined in singles and doubles as Brandeis University concluded the regular season with wins over 25th-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Wheaton College. In just his second singles match of the spring, Cihlar won the final match of a six and one-half hour match 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at sixth singles to give the Judges a 5-4 win over MIT. On Sunday, he teamed with senior Eric Goldberg for a win at No. 3 doubles and then won 6-1, 6-1 at third singles.
Johnny Wu — Washington University — West Chester, PA (Unionville)
Senior Johnny Wu posted a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles in two home wins for Washington University. He teamed with freshman Benjamin van der Sman for a pair of victories at No. 3 doubles and earned two wins at first singles, including a three-setter against the 11th-ranked player in NCAA Division III from University of Texas-Tyler.
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field
Dilys Osei — Emory — Monroe, GA (George Walton Academy)
Kaitlyn Leonard — Emory — Littleton, MA (Littleton)
Dani Bland — Emory — Mountville, PA (Hempfield)
Erica Goldman — Emory — Lloyd Harbor, NY (St. Anthony’s)
The Emory University 1,600-meter relay squad of Dilys Osei, Kaitlyn Leonard, Dani Bland, and Erica Goldman improved upon their NCAA Division III-leading time at the Georgia Tech Invitational. As the only Division III relay in the 16-team event, they finished second in a time of 3:44.64, which is 6.38 seconds faster than the second-fastest relay in the nation.
Laura Darcey — University of Chicago — Teddington, England (The Lady Eleanor Holles School)
University of Chicago sophomore Laura Darcey won the high jump at the Wheaton College (IL) Don Church Twilight Meet. Her height of 1.68 meters ranks fourth in NCAA Division III this season.
Men’s Outdoor Track and Field
Irie Gourde — Brandeis University — Portland, OR (York Academy, Toronto)
Graduate student Irie Gourde broke his own Brandeis University record in the 200-meter dash at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sean Collier Invitational. His time of 21.59 seconds was .12 seconds faster than his previous mark. Gourde, who also won the 100 meters in 10.96 seconds, is ranked 14th in NCAA Division III in the 200 meters.
Benjamin Rogin — Emory University — Hinsdale, IL (Hinsdale Central)
Senior Benjamin Rogin set a pair of personal records at the Georgia Tech Invitational. He recorded times of 14.75 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and 54.58 in the 400-meter hurdles, which moved him into 15th and 24th, respectively, on the NCAA Division III leaderboard this season.
Scott Grote — Brandeis University — Greenfield, MA (Greenfield)
Junior Scott Grote of Brandeis University finished second in two throwing events at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sean Collier Invitational. He threw 45.86 meters in the discus and 12.98 meters in the shot put.
