Athletes of the Week for April 30, 2018

Baseball

John Brinkman  —  Washington University  —  Worden, IL (St. Louis University)

Sophomore infielder John Brinkman batted .563 (9-for-16) with five runs scored and 11 runs batted in as Washington University swept Brandeis University in a four-game series. He tied the UAA single-game record with seven RBI in a 16-6 Bears’ win on Friday, recording a single, two doubles, and a triple. Brinkman posted a 1.125 slugging percentage and .632 on-base percentage.

Richard Brereton  —  Emory University  —  Darien, CT (Darien)

Sophomore Richard Brereton flirted with perfection in his final start of the season in a 5-2 Emory University win over host NYU on Friday. He retired the first 17 batters he faced and finished by yielding two runs and two hits in eight innings. Brereton walked one batter and struck out eight to finish 4-0 in UAA contests.

John Howard  —  Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Clayton)

Junior John Howard tossed an eight-inning complete game to lead Washington University to an 11-1 win over Brandeis University in the opening game of a four-game series on Thursday. He allowed one run on six hits without a walk and struck out a career-high 10 batters.

Women’s Golf

Alyssa Poentis  —  NYU  —  Honolulu, HI (Punahou)

Senior Alyssa Poentis helped lead NYU to an automatic berth into the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship with a runner-up individual finish over the weekend. She shot an even-par 72 in the first round to place second when the tournament was shortened due to inclement weather.

Men’s Golf

Jason Paek  —  University of Rochester  —  Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)

Senior Jason Paek of University of Rochester earned medalist honors in a seven-team tournament featuring New York schools. He shot rounds of 72-74-73 on the par-72 Timber Banks Golf Club course to post a 219 score and finish first by four strokes. Paek paced the field in birdies (10) and par-five scoring (-5).

Softball

Nicole Doyle  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Mount Vernon, OH (Mount Vernon)

Case Western Reserve University junior Nicole Doyle batted .429 (12-for-28) with six runs, two home runs, and six runs batted in to help lead the Spartans to an 8-0 record on the week. She went 7-of-14 with four runs scored and both of her home runs in a four-game sweep of host University of Chicago in which the Spartans outscored the Maroons 26-3. Doyle registered a .714 slugging percentage for the Spartans, who won 14 of their last 15 regular season contests.

Sarah Flanders  —  Emory University  —  Peachtree City, GA (Starr’s Mill)

Junior centerfielder Sarah Flanders hit .333 (6-for-18) with seven runs batted in as the Eagles won five of six games and finished the UAA season with a 15-1 record. She registered at least one hit and one RBI in each of the Eagles’ four wins over NYU, including driving in three runs in a 5-1 win in the opener of Saturday’s twinbill. Flanders drove in a run in the Eagles’ 3-2 win over NAIA’s top-ranked team, Georgia Gwinnett College, on Wednesday.

Anna McKee  —  Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Visitation Academy)

Senior Anna McKee posted a 3-0 record and did not allow a run in 19 innings of work as Washington University swept a four-game series at Brandeis University. She tossed a pair of three-hit shutouts in 3-0 victories in the first and third games before recording five scoreless frames in relief of a 5-2 win in the final game, capping off a rare tripleheader sweep on Saturday. McKee yielded four walks and eight hits, while striking out 14.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
