Athletes of the Week for May 7, 2018

Baseball

Alex Capetillo  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Cincinnati, OH (Turpin)

Case Western Reserve University senior infielder Alex Capetillo batted .750 (6-for-8) with two home runs and four runs batted as the Spartans split two games against John Carroll University. He added a double, a walk, and two stolen bases. He finished 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs in a 10-9 Spartans’ loss on Tuesday and then went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in a 6-5 victory on Saturday.

Softball

Taylor Arends  —  Washington University  —  River Forest, IL (Oak Park and River Forest)

Junior shortstop Taylor Arends hit .615 (8-for-13) with a home run and six runs batted in to help lead Washington University to three wins in a four-game UAA series against NYU. She hit safely in all four games and registered three hits in two contests. Arends batted 3-for-3 with three runs scored, a home run, an four RBI in a 9-7 Bears’ win in the series opener and finished 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI in a 5-1 victory in the series finale.

Maggie Clapp  —  Washington University  —  Portland, OR (Lincoln)

Senior Maggie Clapp posted a 1-1 record and a 1.00 earned run average in 14 innings pitched against NYU. After allowing one earned run in a loss in the second game of the four-game series on Friday, she limited the Violets to four hits and one earned run in a 5-1 Bears’ win in the series finale. In her two appearances, Clapp walked only three batters and struck out nine.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Annalise Wagner  —  Washington University  —  Webster Groves, MO (John Burroughs)

Senior Annalise Wagner shattered her own Washington University record in the 800-meter run against NCAA Division I competition at the Indiana University Billy Hayes Invitational. Her time of 2:07.31 is the second-fastest time in Division III this season. Wagner also anchored the Bears’ 1,600-meter relay that recorded the nation’s fifth-fastest time of 3:50.75.

Eka Jose  —  Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)

First-year competitor Eka Jose placed second in the triple jump against NCAA Division I competition at the Indiana University Billy Hayes Invitational. Her personal-best distance of 11.65 meters ranks 20th in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Nick Matteucci  —  Washington University  —  Des Peres, MO (Parkway South)

Sophomore Nick Matteucci broke the Washington University record in the 1,500-meter run against NCAA Division I competition at the Indiana University Billy Hayes Invitational. His personal-best time of 3:45.86 ranks third in Division III this season and broke the previous program mark of 3:46.03, set by Josh Clark in 2016.

Quin Preston  —  Washington University  —  Lebanon, IL (O’Fallon Township)

Junior Quin Preston of Washington University place second in the javelin against NCAA Division I competition at the Indiana University Billy Hayes Invitational. He recorded a distance of 52.85 meters.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
