Athletes of the Week for May 21, 2018
Men’s Golf
Connor Yakubov — Emory University — Columbus, OH (St. Charles Prep)
Junior Connor Yakubov tied for seventh place overall at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship at Grandover Resort East and West Courses in Greensboro, North Carolina. He shot a one-over par 289 (71-73-77-68) to tie Jonathan Chen (2013) for the best NCAA championship score in program history. Yakubov established the program record for lowest 18-hole score with his four-under par 68 in the final round to help the Eagles finish seventh as a team.
Softball
Katie Wede — Case Western Reserve University — Carmel, IN (Carmel)
Senior Katie Wede batted .400 (4-for-10) with two runs scored and two stolen bases to help lead Case Western Reserve University to the title at the NCAA Super Regional in Hope, Michigan. She was named the Most Outstanding Player of the regional. With their two wins in three games, the Spartans advanced to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for the first time in program history.
Ilissa Hamilton — Case Western Reserve University — South Abington Township, PA (Scranton Prep)
Sophomore Ilissa Hamilton finished 2-1 with a 2.47 earned run average in helping lead Case Western Reserve University to the title at the NCAA Super Regional in Hope, Michigan. Earning Most Outstanding Pitcher honors at the regional, she earned both her wins in complete games, limiting Hope to three runs and 10 hits in 14 innings in those games. With their two wins in three games, the Spartans advanced to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for the first time in program history.
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field
Nicole VacaGuzman — University of Chicago — Wyoming, MI (Grandville)
Junior Nicole VacaGuzman of University of Chicago broke her own program record in winning the 400-meter dash at the North Central College Gregory Invitational. Her time of 55.92 seconds qualified her for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Alexandra Thompson — University of Chicago — Chicago, IL (University Lab School)
Junior Alexandra Thompson of University of Chicago won the high jump at the North Central College Gregory Invitational. She recorded a season-best height of 1.68 meters to qualify for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Men’s Outdoor Track and Field
Malcolm Montilus — NYU — Mendham, NJ (West Morris Mendham)
NYU senior Malcolm Montillus finished second in the 400-meter dash at the All-Atlantic Meet. His career-best time of 48.04 seconds qualified him for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Ethan Brodeur — Washington University — Naperville, IL (Naperville Central)
Washington University graduate student Ethan Brodeur secured a spot in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 1,500 meters. His time of 3:51.43 at the North Central College Gregory Invitational marked a personal-best.
Nathan Downey — University of Chicago — Orinda, CA (Miramonte)
University of Chicago senior Nathan Downey captured the pole vault at the Augustana College Last Chance Meet. His season-best mark of 4.91 meters qualified him for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
