Athletes of the Week for September 6, 2016

Women’s Cross Country

Emily Bryson  —  Brandeis University  —  Quincy, Mass. (North Quincy)

Sophomore Emily Bryson led a Brandeis University sweep by finishing first at the Emmanuel College Fens Classic. She covered the two-mile course in 11:09, eclipsing the previous course record by 37 seconds.

Cassidy McPherson  —  University of Chicago  —  Palatine, Ill. (Palatine)

Junior Cassidy McPherson earned her first career victory at the University of St. Francis (Ill.) Twilight Invitational. She completed the five-kilometer course in 18:24.2, finishing 1.3 seconds ahead of the runner-up, to lead the Maroons to the team title in the 10-team field.

Men’s Cross Country

Timofey Karginov  —  University of Chicago  —  Chapel Hill, N.C. (Chapel Hill)

Senior Timofey Karginov raced to his first career victory in the 115-runner field at the University of St. Francis (Ill.) Twilight Invitational, leading the Maroons to the team title in the nine-team event. He covered the five-kilometer course in 15:14.3, nearly 20 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Football — Offense

Sam Benger  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Hingham, Mass. (Hingham)

Carnegie Mellon University junior running back Sam Benger opened the season with 251 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the Tartans’ 41-34 home loss to Washington University. He averaged 6.0 yards per rush on a career-high 42 carries. Benger extended his streak of scoring at least one touchdown to 12 consecutive games and moved into second on the program’s all-time rushing list with 2,913 career yards.

Matt Page  —  Washington University  —  Oak Lawn, Ill. (Brother Rice)

Washington University senior Matt Page, making his first career start at tight end after converting from quarterback, caught eight passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears’ 41-34 overtime victory at Carnegie Mellon University. He grabbed the game-tying two-point conversion with 12 seconds remaining in regulation and then hauled in the game-winning 29-yard touchdown in overtime.

Football — Defense

Brian Khoury  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Davenport, Iowa (Bettendorf)

Carnegie Mellon senior defensive end Brian Khoury recorded seven tackles with two sacks and four tackles for loss in a 41-34 Tartan overtime loss to Washington University. His two sacks gave him 19 for his career and moved him into third-place in the school record book. Khoury made five solo tackles and his four tackles for loss totaled 25 yards.

Football — Special Teams

Tyler Kohman  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Pataskala, Ohio (Columbus Academy)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Tyler Kohman averaged 46.0 yards per punt on seven punts in the Tartans’ 41-34 overtime loss to Washington University. He placed two punts inside the Bears’ 20-yard line and booted a long kick of 54 yards.

Justin Phan  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Atlanta, Ga. (Greater Atlanta Christian)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Justin Phan returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown in the Spartans’ 45-17 victory over University of Chicago. His return was just two yards shy of the school record and was the longest punt return in NCAA Division III during the week. Phan added four receptions for a career-high 62 yards.

Women’s Golf

Arisa Kimura  —  NYU  —  Bethesda, Md. (Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart)

First-year golfer Arisa Kimura won the individual title among 50 golfers at the St. Lawrence University Invitational, leading NYU to the team title in the 10-team field. In her first collegiate competition, she shot a two-round 146, including a one-under par 71 on Saturday.

Men’s Golf

Jensen Li  —  NYU  —  Sunnyvale, Calif. (Bellarmine College Prep)

Freshman Jensen Li tied for fifth in the 61-player field at the St. Lawrence University Invitational in his first collegiate competition. His two-round score of 151 included a one-over par 73 on Sunday and helped guide the Violets to the team title in the 12-team tournament.

Women’s Soccer — Offense

Lea McDaniel  —  Brandeis University  —  Phoenix, Ariz. (Chaparral)

Brandeis University senior forward Lea McDaniel scored both game-winners and two of three Judges’ goals in wins over Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lasell College. She tallied in the 27th minute of a 1-0 win over MIT on Thursday and in the 26th minute to give the Judges the lead in a 2-0 victory over Lasell on Sunday. McDaniel raised her career totals to 12 goals and six game-winners.

Women’s Soccer — Defense

Alexis Grossman  —  Brandeis University  —  Syosset, N.Y. (Syosset)

Brandeis University senior goalkeeper Alexis Grossman recorded shutouts in her first two games of the season. She made a career-high eight saves in a 1-0 win over Massachusetts Institute of Technology and two more stops in a 2-0 victory over Lasell College. Grossman moved into fourth place all-time at the school with her 12th and 13th career shutouts.

Cassie Steinberg  —  NYU  —  Boca Raton, Fla. (Spanish River)

NYU senior goalkeeper Cassie Steinberg recorded shutouts in her first two games of the season. She made nine saves to lead the Violets past Vassar College 1-0 and did not allow a goal in a 3-0 victory over St. Joseph’s College (Long Island). Steinberg increased her career total to 24 shutouts.

Men’s Soccer — Offense

Josh Ocel  —  Brandeis University  —  North Attleboro, Mass. (Worcester Academy)

Senior Josh Ocel scored a career-high five points in a 3-1 Brandeis University win over John Carroll University on Saturday. He scored the first and third goals, the first on a free kick and second on a penalty kick, and added the game-winning assist on a corner kick. Ocel became the 14th player in program history to reach the 20-assist plateau for his career.

Zack Masciopinto  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Arlington, Heights, Ill. (Buffalo Grove)

Sophomore midfielder Zack Masciopinto scored two goals and added two assists to lead Carnegie Mellon University to a pair of wins to open the season. He scored once and assisted on two more goals to give the Tartans a 3-0 lead in a 9-2 win over Muskingum University. Masciopinto tallied the only goal in a 1-0 win at University of Mount Union.

Men’s Soccer — Defense

Hill Bonin  —  University of Chicago  —  Lone Tree, Colo. (Rock Canyon)

University of Chicago junior goalkeeper Hill Bonin picked up two shutouts in goal to open the season. He made two saves in a 4-0 Maroons’ win over Dominican University (Ill.) and one stop in a 1-0 victory over University of Texas-Dallas. Bonin has recorded 14 shutouts in 35 career starts.

Volleyball

Eliza Donohue  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Lancaster, Pa. (Hempfield)

Junior Eliza Donohue hit .453 in four matches to lead Carnegie Mellon University to four victories at the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic. She averaged 2.0 kills and 0.71 blocks per set, while finishing the weekend with her best performance, hitting .563 (10-1-16) with three blocks in a four-set Tartan victory over regional rival Salisbury University.

Karissa Dzurik  —  Emory University  —  Columbia, Pa. (Hempfield)

Sophomore Karissa Dzurik averaged 3.67 kills and 2.0 digs per set to lead Emory University to a 3-1 record at the Emory Classic. She recorded double-digit kills in all four matches, leading the team in three matches. Dzurik’s 15 kills in a four-set win over University of St. Thomas (Minn.) and a five-set loss to College of Saint Benedict marked her second-highest single-match totals in her career. She contributed nine kills against St. Thomas and 13 against Saint Benedict.

Julianne Malek  —  Washington University  —  The Woodlands, Texas (John Cooper)

Sophomore Julianne Malek hit .471 in five matches to lead Washington University to a 4-1 mark at its own Baden Invitational. She averaged 2.25 kills and 0.75 blocks per set, including a 10-kill, five-block performance in the Bears’ sweep of Edgewood College in their final match of the weekend.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
