Athletes of the Week for September 19, 2016

Women’s Cross Country

Emily Bryson  —  Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Brandeis University sophomore Emily Bryson helped the Judges defend their title at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Cross Country Invitational. She improved on her 2015 fifth-place finish by capturing third, covering the five-kilometer course in 17:50.83, a 19-second improvement from last year’s meet.

Aly Wayne  —  Washington University  —  Lowell, MA (Phillips Academy Andover)

Washington University junior Aly Wayne led a sweep of top-seven finishes for the Bears at the Wheaton College (IL) Gil Dodds Invitational. She raced to the first individual title of her career with a six-kilometer time of 22:00.4 to win by 27 seconds over sophomore teammate Ellie Degen. The Bears captured the team title in the 14-team event with 15 points.

Men’s Cross Country

Ryan Becker  —  Washington University  —  Johnson City, TN (Science Hill)

Washington University senior Ryan Becker led the Bears and the Wheaton College (IL) Gil Dodds Invitational competition with an eight-kilometer time of 25:22.4 in the 185-runner field. The Bears placed all five scorers in the top-eight to take the team title.

Football — Offense

Brendan Lynch  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Sarver, PA (Freeport Area)

Senior wide receiver Brendan Lynch tied a Case Western Reserve University single-game record with 222 receiving yards in the Spartans’ 55-0 win at Grove City College. He caught a career-high nine passes, three for touchdowns, and matched the receiving yardage mark set by Dave Wooley in 1997.

Chandler Carroll  —  University of Chicago  —  Alexandria, IN (Yorktown)

Junior running back Chandler Carroll rushed 27 times for 214 yards, averaging 7.9 yards per carry, to lead University of Chicago to a 35-16 victory over Millsaps College. He ran for a 38-yard score and also threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Dante Nepa. 

Football — Defense

Jackson Garrey  —  University of Chicago  —  Murphy, TX (Plano East)

Senior linebacker Jackson Garrey matched his single-game career-high with 16 tackles in a 35-16 University of Chicago win over Millsaps College on Saturday. He helped spearhead the defense that limited the Majors to 10 points until a touchdown pass completed the scoring as time expired. Garrey made nine solo stops.

Football — Special Teams

Tyler Kohman  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Pataskala, Ohio (Columbus Academy)

Junior punter Tyler Kohman averaged 43.3 yards per punt on six punts as Carnegie Mellon University defeated Waynesburg University. He placed four punts inside the Yellow Jackets’ 20-yard line with three inside the 10. Kohman booted a season-best 57-yarder late in the first half.

Women’s Golf

Samantha Haubenstock  —  Washington University  —  Weston, FL (Pine Crest School)

Washington University first-year golfer Samantha Haubenstock finished as the runner-up in the Rhodes College Fall Classic after posting a three-under-par 69 in the second round. She shot a two-round total of 147 and helped lead the Bears to a second-place team finish, just two shots off defending NCAA Division III champion and host Rhodes.

Men’s Golf

Jack Mulligan  —  University of Rochester  —  Flossmoor, IL (Homewood-Flossmoor)

University of Rochester freshman Jack Mulligan led the Yellowjackets to a fourth-place finish in the 22-team Middlebury College Duke Nelson Invitational, carding rounds of 73 and 75 on the Ralph Myhre Course. His two-day total of 148 placed him seventh individually and first for Rochester for the second consecutive tournament.

Women’s Soccer — Offense

Samantha Schwartz  —  Brandeis University  —  Highland Park, IL (Highland Park)

Junior forward Samantha Schwartz scored three goals in a 2-0 week for Brandeis University, which improved to 7-0 with wins over a pair of regionally ranked foes. She tallied in the 37th and 53rd minutes in a 5-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday. Schwartz scored the equalizer in the 48th minute of the Judges’ come-from-behind 2-1 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Women’s Soccer — Defense

Alexis Grossman  — Brandeis University —  Syosset, NY (Syosset)

Senior goalkeeper Alexis Grossman made seven saves in a 2-0 week for Brandeis University against regionally ranked opponents. She made four stops in a 5-0 Judges’ win over Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday for her fourth shutout of the season. Grossman added three more saves after yielding her first goal of the season in a 2-1 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Men’s Soccer — Offense

Max Lopez  —  University of Chicago  —  Tulsa, OK (Cascia Hall)

University of Chicago sophomore forward Max Lopez netted his first career hat trick, scoring all three Maroon goals in a 3-0 win over Wartburg College on Sunday. Earlier in the week, he tallied an assist in a 2-0 victory over Wheaton College (IL) and scored once in a 4-1 win over Elmhurst College. Lopez has matched his goal total of last season with six for the fourth-ranked and undefeated Maroons.

Men’s Soccer — Defense

Nick Tannenbaum  —  Washington University  —  Downers Grove, IL (Downers Grove South)

Washington University senior goalkeeper Nick Tannenbaum posted a pair of shutouts as the 17th-ranked Bears remained undefeated with a pair of home victories. He made one save in a 1-0 win over Wheaton College (IL) on Friday and made a career-high five stops as the Bears shut out 16th-ranked Luther College 4-0 on Sunday. The Bears are the only team in NCAA Division III to not allow a goal this season.

Women’s Tennis

Laila El Dessouki  —  NYU  —  Giza, Egypt (German School of Cairo)

Senior Laila El Dessouki finished 3-0 at the Vassar College Scramble over the weekend. She picked up a pair of singles wins over opponents from Vassar and Connecticut College, and teamed with Judy Kam for a doubles victory over their Connecticut opponents.

Men’s Tennis

Umberto Setter  —  NYU  —  Bedano, Switzerland (TASIS Lugano)

Senior Umberto Setter finished 4-0 in singles as NYU competed in the Four-In-The-Fall Tournament at Fordham University. Competing in Flights 1 and 2 against exclusively NCAA Division I opponents. Setter three of his four matches in straight sets, while capturing the other match in a 10-6 tiebreaker.

Volleyball

Jessica Holler  —  Emory University  —  Roswell, GA (Blessed Trinity)

Emory University senior Jessica Holler hit .443, while averaging 3.25 kills, 1.33 blocks, and 0.67 service aces per set as the Eagles won all four of their matches at their home tournament. She hit .571 and led all players with 13 kills in a sweep of Transylvania University and .562 with 11 kills and five blocks in a 3-0 victory over Maryville College. Holler recorded a match-high nine kills with four blocks and three service aces in a sweep of 21st-ranked University of Mary Washington.

Chloe Stile  —  Washington University  —  Richfield, OH (Revere)

Washington University first-year setter Chloe Stile averaged 9.89 assists per set, adding 11 kills and 38 digs, as the Bears finished 3-1 at the Wittenberg University Fall Classic. She recorded a season-high 55 assists in a five-set win over Heidelberg University, and contributed 49 assists and 11 digs as the Bears toppled top-ranked and defending NCAA Division III champion California Lutheran University in five sets.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
