Athletes of the Week for September 26, 2016

Women’s Cross Country

Khia Kurtenbach  —  University of Chicago  —  Germantown, WI (Germantown)

Junior Khia Kurtenbach of University of Chicago made her season debut and won the six-kilometer race at the Augustana College Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on Friday. Her time of 22:27.4 bested the field of 383 runners and led the Maroons to the team title in the 24-team field.

Men’s Cross Country

Timofey Karginov  —  University of Chicago  —  Chapel Hill, NC (Chapel Hill)

Senior Timofey Karginov of University of Chicago placed 12th in the 401-runner field at the Augustana College Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on Friday. He registered a time of 25:39.7 over the eight-kilometer course and helped lead the Maroons to a third-place finish, first among NCAA Division III squads, in the 21-team field.

Football — Offense

Jacob Burke  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Johnstown, OH (Northridge)

Case Western Reserve University junior fullback Jacob Burke rushed 20 times for 163 years and matched a program single-game record with four touchdowns in the Spartans’ 35-7 victory at Waynesburg University. He scored all three Spartan touchdowns in the first half and added a career-high 49-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

Austin Smestad  —  Washington University  —  Shoreview, MN (Mounds View)

Washington University sophomore running back Austin Smestad ran for a career-high 169 yards on 19 carries and scored three second-half touchdowns to lead the Bears to a 36-21 win at Birmingham-Southern College. He scored from six yards out to give the Bears the lead for the first time and added touchdown runs of 14 and 28 yards in the fourth quarter.

Football — Defense

Chanan Demery  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Woodbridge, VA (Potomac)

Case Western Reserve University junior linebacker Chanan Demery led the Spartans defense in a 35-7 win at Waynesburg University. He collected six solo tackles, recorded a pass breakup, and registered his second interception of the season. The Spartans yielded just 57 rushing yards.

Football — Special Teams

Gabe Renna  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Carlsbad, CA (La Costa Canyon)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Gabe Renna converted all three of his field goal attempts in the Tartans’ 20-16 setback at 18th-ranked Thomas More College. He connected on field goals from 21, 31, and 35 yards and made an extra point to improve to 10-for-10 on extra points this season.

Women’s Golf

Samantha Haubenstock  —  Washington University  —  Weston, FL (Pine Crest School)

First-year golfer Samantha Haubenstock led Washington University to its second tournament title of the season with a victory at the Illinois Wesleyan University Fall Classic. She shot rounds of even par 72 and one-under par 71 for a 143 total to finish second and earn all-tournament honors.

Men’s Golf

Jack Mulligan  —  University of Rochester  —  Flossmoor, IL (Homewood-Flossmoor)

Freshman Jack Mulligan of University of Rochester carded rounds of 75 and 74 for a 149 total at the Timber Banks Golf Course to place third of 41 golfers at a seven-team tournament of New York colleges. He led the field in par-3 scoring (-1) and ranked third in pars (22) and birdies (5) as the Yellowjackets won the event by six strokes.

Women’s Soccer — Offense

Haili Adams  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Kirkland, WA (Juanita)

Carnegie Mellon University junior Haili Adams scored three goals in a 2-0-1 week for the Tartans. She scored the tying goal in the 84th minute of a 1-1 draw with John Carroll University on Tuesday. Adams tallied both Tartan goals in a 2-1 victory over Allegheny College on Sunday.

Jenna McKinney  —  University of Chicago  —  Tampa, FL (Henry B. Plant)

University of Chicago sophomore midfielder Jenna McKinney scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the fourth-ranked Maroons to two more wins. She assisted on a goal in a 3-1 Maroon win over Wheaton College (IL) on Wednesday and then tallied twice in a 3-0 victory over 20th-ranked Augustana College on Saturday.

Women’s Soccer — Defense

Katie Donovan  —  University of Chicago —  New Canaan, CT (New Canaan)

University of Chicago first-year goalkeeper Katie Donovan improved to 8-0 for the season with a pair of wins. She made two saves, including one on a breakaway, in the Maroons’ 3-0 win over 20th-ranked Augustana College on Saturday. Earlier in the week, Donovan stopped three shots in a 3-1 win over Wheaton College (IL).

Kelly Von Zup  — Washington University —  Temecula, CA (Great Oak)

Washington University junior back Kelly Von Zup helped the Bears record their seventh shutout of the season in a 2-0 win at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Friday. The Bears limited the Engineers to five shots and one shot on goal.

Men’s Soccer — Offense

Tristan Medios-Simon  —  NYU  —  Kailua, HI (Iolani)

NYU junior midfielder Tristan Medios-Simon recorded a hat trick in the Violets’ 3-3 draw with New Jersey City University on Wednesday. He scored 26 seconds into the game and then netted a pair of goals within four minutes of one another to turn a 2-1 NYU deficit into a 3-2 lead.

Men’s Soccer — Defense

Calvin Boyle  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Chartiers Valley)

Case Western Reserve University junior goalkeeper Calvin Boyle made 11 saves and allowed just one goal in 180 minutes in a 1-1 week for the Spartans. He stopped four shots in a 2-0 win over John Carroll University on Tuesday and then made a season-high seven saves in a 1-0 loss to Lycoming College on Saturday.

Hill Bonin  —  University of Chicago  —  Lone Tree, CO (Rock Canyon)

University of Chicago junior goalkeeper Hill Bonin improved to 9-0 this season with a pair of shutouts. He made five saves in the Maroons’ 4-0 win over North Central College. Bonin recorded his career-high eighth shutout of the season in a 2-0 Maroon victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, lowering his season goals against average to 0.11.

Women’s Tennis

Bridget Harding  —  Emory University  —  Northport, NY (Northport)

Junior Bridget Harding captured the ITA Division III South Region Singles Championship and teamed with senior Katarina Su for their second consecutive doubles title. Harding defeated senior teammate Michelle Satterfield in the singles final, while she and Su edged Satterfield and Daniela Lopez in the doubles final, 13-11 in the deciding set.

Katarina Su  —  Emory University  —  Alpharetta, GA (Alpharetta)

Senior Katatina Su teamed with junior Bridget Harding to capture the ITA Division III South Region Doubles Championship for the second consecutive year. Su and Harding defeated teammates Michelle Satterfield and Daniela Lopez in the finals, 13-11 in the third set. Su advanced to the semifinal round of singles before falling to eventual champion Harding.

Men’s Tennis

David Liu  —  University of Chicago  —  Omaha, NE (Millard North)

Junior David Liu captured his first ITA Division III Central Region Singles Championship, winning seven consecutive matches. The tournament’s eighth seed defeated three ranked opponents, including fourth-seeded John Carswell of Washington University and the top seed from Kalamazoo College. Liu came back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to post a straight-set win over the top seed in the semifinals and then defeated classmate Peter Leung in straight sets in the final on Monday.

Max Hawkins  —  University of Chicago  —  Rolling Hills Estates, CA (Chadwick School)
Tyler Raclin  —  University of Chicago  —  St. Louis, MO (Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day)

Senior Max Hawkins and freshman Tyler Raclin of University of Chicago captured the ITA Division III Central Region Doubles Championship. After entering the tournament unseeded, the duo ran off six wins with their closest match being 8-5. Hawkins and Raclin defeated freshmen teammates Erik Kerrigan and Ninan Kumar, 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

Volleyball

Jackie Gibbons  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Evanston, IL (Evanston Township)

Senior middle blocker Jackie Gibbons hit .416 and averaged 3.93 kills per set to lead 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University to a 4-0 record at its own DoubleTree Invitational. She hit .813 (13 kills, 0 errors, 16 attacks) as the Tartans handed University of Mount Union its second loss of the season. Gibbons recorded double-digit kills in all four matches, including a career-high 19 in a four-set Tartan victory over John Carroll University.

Emily Newton  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Manhattan Beach, CA (Chadwick School)

Senior setter Emily Newton averaged 11.50 assists per set to help 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University to a 4-0 mark at its own DoubleTree Invitational. She recorded 50 assists in the Tartans’ four-set win over John Carroll University and added a career-high eight kills. Newton contributed 27 digs, seven blocks, and six service aces in the four wins. 

Andie McKinnon  —  Emory University  —  Durham, NC (Orange Hill)

First-year defensive specialist Andie McKinnon averaged 5.27 digs per set to lead eighth-ranked Emory University to three wins over NCAA Division III South Region foes. She recorded 33 digs in the Eagles’ five-set win over 20th-ranked Hendrix College, tying the third-highest single-match total in program history. McKinnon anchored the Eagles’ defense that limited the opposition to a .123 hitting percentage.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
