Athletes of the Week for October 1, 2018
Women’s Cross Country
Emily Bryson — Brandeis University — Quincy, MA (North Quincy)
Senior Emily Bryson and Brandeis University remained undefeated on the season by winning the Main State Meet Invitational. Bryson covered the six-kilometer course in 21:37.7 to best 246 finishers and win by nearly 30 seconds over the runner-up from Colby College.
Paige Lawler — Washington University — Lexington, MA (Lexington)
Junior Paige Lawler was the top NCAA Division III runner at the Loyola University Lakefront Invitational on Saturday, leading second-ranked Washington University to a sixth-place finish among 33 teams in the predominantly Division I field. She placed 11th overall with a five-kilometer time of 17:17.09.
Men’s Cross Country
Brad Hodkinson — Washington University — Snohomish, WA (Snohomish)
Senior Brad Hodkinson of Washington University raced to a 14th-place finish out of 349 runners at the predominantly NCAA Division I Loyola University Lakefront Invitational on Saturday. He completed the 10-kilometer course in 24:40.50 and was one of only four Division III runners to place in the top-25, leading the second-ranked Bears to a seventh-place finish in the 26-team event.
Football – Offense
Justin Phan — Case Western Reserve University — Atlanta, GA (Greater Atlanta Christian)
Case Western Reserve University senior wide receiver Justin Phan caught 10 passes for a season-high 128 yards and two touchdowns in the 19th-ranked Spartans’ 35-14 win at Westminster College on Saturday night. His 18-yard scoring reception late in the second quarter evened the score at 14 and another 18-yard scoring play gave the Spartans a 21-14 lead. Phan eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark for the second time this season and pulled down double-digit passes for the second time as well.
Football – Defense
Patrick Crossey — Case Western Reserve University — Pittsburgh, PA (Plum Senior)
Case Western Reserve University junior safety and co-captain Patrick Crossey recorded a career-best 15 tackles to lead the Spartans to a key 35-14 win at Westminster College on Saturday night. He tallied his second interception of the season, picking off a pass on the Spartans’ one-yard line and returning it 55 yards.
Women’s Golf
Samantha Haubenstock — Washington University — Weston, FL (Pine Crest School)
Junior Samantha Haubenstock led eighth-ranked Washington University to a runner-up finish at the Dan Quayle Collegiate Classic in Danville, Indiana. She shot an opening-round 74 before carding an even-par 72 in the second round to finish third. The Bears finished second behind host and 11th-ranked DePauw University.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Darcy Cunningham — Washington University — West Chicago, IL (St. Charles East)
Senior midfielder Darcy Cunningham scored both goals in top-ranked Washington University’s 2-1 overtime victory over Emory University in the UAA opener for both schools on Saturday. She bent a corner kick from the left side of the field past the outstretched arms of the goalie into the back of the net for the game-winner. Cunningham assisted on a goal in the Bears’ 5-0 midweek win at Webster University on Wednesday.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Gabbie Cesarone — Washington University — St. Charles, IL (St. Charles North)
First-year center back Gabbie Cesarone anchored the back line in a pair of wins for top-ranked Washington University. She and the Bears’ defense limited their opponents to a combined three shots on goal, posting a 5-0 win at Webster University and a 2-1 overtime win over UAA rival Emory University.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Kyle Ruark — University of Chicago — Kansas City, MO (Rockhurst)
Freshman midfielder Kyle Ruark scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining to lead second-ranked University of Chicago to a 1-0 victory over fourth-ranked University of Rochester. He gathered the ball on the right wing, pushed forward, cut inward, and struck the ball just inside the far post as the Maroons handed the Yellowjackets their first loss of the season.
Marc VandenBerg — Washington University — Annapolis, MD (McDonogh School)
Senior midfielder Marc VandenBerg scored a goal in each of two Washington University wins. He scored in the first half in the Bears’ 2-1 upset win over previously undefeated and sixth-ranked Emory University on Saturday. VandenBerg opened the week with a goal in a 5-0 victory at Greenville College on Monday.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Greg Irwin — Brandeis University — Passaic, NJ (Seton Hall Prep)
Junior goalkeeper Greg Irwin did not allow a goal in 200 minutes of action in a 1-0-1 week for Brandeis University. He made four saves in a 1-0 victory over Wheaton College (MA) and finished one shy of his career-high with seven saves in a scoreless draw with Case Western Reserve University in the UAA opener for both teams.
Charlie Fink — Case Western Reserve University — Akron, OH (Revere)
Case Western Reserve University freshman goalkeeper Charlie Fink played 200 shutout minutes for the Spartans in a 1-0-1 week. He stopped two shots in a 3-0 upset win over seventh-ranked Kenyon College on Wednesday and then made five saves in a scoreless draw at Brandeis University on Saturday.
Women’s Tennis
Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico — Emory University — Pinecrest, FL (Gulliver Prep)
Jessica Fatemi — Emory University — Potomac, MD (Walter Johnson)
Emory University sophomore Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and first-year player Jessica Fatemi won the doubles title at the ITA South Regional Championships with Gonzalez-Rico also capturing her second consecutive singles title. The duo topped teammates Daniela Lopez and Emma Cartledge, 6-4, 7-5 in the final. Gonzalez-Rico defeated Lopez in the singles semifinals before topping her opponent from North Carolina Wesleyan University in a three-set final.
Men’s Tennis
Chaz Downing — Carnegie Mellon University — Newport Beach, CA (Corona Del Mar)
Daniel Levine — Carnegie Mellon University — Highland Park, IL (Boca Prep International School)
Carnegie Mellon University seniors Chaz Downing and Daniel Levine captured the doubles title at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships and advanced to the singles final, where Downing came back to edge his teammate in three sets. The top-seeded tandem defeated their Salisbury University opponents,
6-2, 6-4, in the doubles final. On the tournament’s first day, Levine became the program’s all-time combined wins leader with 149 career victories.
Volleyball
Maia So-Holloway — Carnegie Mellon University — Oakland, CA (Sacred Heart Cathedral)
Carnegie Mellon University junior setter Maia So-Holloway averaged 10.73 assists and 3.0 digs per set to help lead the Tartans to a 3-0 mark at the first UAA round robin at Brandeis University. She totaled a season-best 49 assists, adding 8 digs and four service aces in the Tartans’ four-set win over seventh-ranked Emory University.
Erika Foose — Carnegie Mellon University — Allentown, PA (Parkland)
Carnegie Mellon University junior middle blocker Erika Foose averaged 2.73 kills and hit .455 to help lead the Tartans to a 3-0 mark at the first UAA round robin at Brandeis University. She hit .519 with a match-high 16 kills and two service aces in the Tartans’ four-set win over seventh-ranked Emory University.
Emma Griffith — University of Chicago — New York, NY (Calhoun)
University of Chicago sophomore setter Emma Griffith averaged 10.0 assists and 4.1 digs per set as the Maroons won all three of their matches at the first UAA round robin hosted by Brandeis University. She finished with 34 assists and 16 digs in the Maroons’ three-set win over eighth-ranked Washington University.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Mollie Seidner — Washington University — Woodbridge, CT (Hopkins)
Washington University junior Mollie Seidner won the 200-yard freestyle and anchored the winning 200-yard freestyle relay in the Bears’ season-opening win over NCAA Division I St. Louis University. She swam a time of 1:56.79 in the 200 free, while the relay that won in 1:36.93 gave the Bears a four-point victory.
Elizabeth Davidson — Washington University — West Des Moines, IA (Valley)
Washington University sophomore Elizabeth Davidson won the one-meter dive (202.05) to help lead the Bears to a 114-110 win over NCAA Division I St. Louis University. She bested a field of five competitors in the only diving event in the meet.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Kevin Van Cleave — Washington University — Elm Grove, WI (Brookfield Academy)
Washington University senior Kevin Van Cleave won two individual events and swam on a winning relay to lead the Bears to a 126-92 victory over NCAA Division I St. Louis University. He captured the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.10) and the 100-yard breaststroke (57.09 seconds), while also swimming on the 400-yard medley relay (3:21.62).
Matthew Grottkau — Washington University — Reading, MA (Phillips Academy Andover)
Washington University sophomore Matthew Grottkau won the one-meter dive (186.52) to help lead the Bears to a 126-92 victory over NCAA Division I St. Louis University. The one-meter board was the only diving event in the meet.
Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
