Athletes of the Week for October 3, 2016

Women’s Cross Country

Aly Wayne  —  Washington University  —  Lowell, MA (Phillips Academy Andover)

Washington University junior Aly Wayne finished first at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville John Flamer Invitational, outracing Division I and III competition with a six-kilometer time of 22:00.98. She led the Bears to a first-place team finish among non-Division I teams.

Men’s Cross Country

Jorge Maldonado  —  NYU  —  Palisades Park, NJ (Palisades Park)

NYU senior Jorge Maldonado placed third in the 401-runner Lehigh University Paul Short Run field, leading the Violets to a fifth-place finish in the 45-team field. He crossed the 8,000-meter finish line in 24:45.

Football — Offense

Burke Moser  —  University of Chicago —  Pittsburgh, PA (Quaker Valley)

Senior quarterback Burke Moser completed 37 of 58 passes for a career-high 433 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-34 University of Chicago comeback win over Birmingham-Southern College. He led the Maroons back from a 34-24 deficit with two scoring drives over the final six minutes of the game with the final drive covering 85 yards.

Football — Defense

Chanan Demery  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Woodbridge, VA (Potomac)

Junior linebacker Chanan Demery intercepted two passes, forced a fumble, and helped the Case Western Reserve University defense yield just 26 rushing yards as the Spartans defeated previously unbeaten Saint Vincent College, 53-28. He picked off a pass at the Spartans’ 14-yard line in the first quarter and set up a third-quarter touchdown with his second interception.

Football — Special Teams

William Richter  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Leander, TX (Cedar Park)

Freshman returner William Richter played a huge factor in field position in a 49-26 Carnegie Mellon University victory over Bethany College. His combined eight punt and kickoff returns totaled 138 yards. Richter’s 33-yard punt return and 49-yard kick return both set up quick Tartan touchdowns.

Dan Kalvaitis  —  Washington University  —  Springfield, IL (Sacred Heart-Griffin)

Junior kicker Dan Kalvaitis converted both field goals and four extra point attempts in a 34-10 Washington University victory over Berry College. He booted a career-long 41-yarder with 6:16 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Bears a 20-10 lead.

Women’s Golf

Alyssa Poentis  —  NYU  —  Honolulu, HI (Punahou)

NYU junior Alyssa Poentis finished as the runner-up in the 91-player field at the Williams College Invitational with a two-round total of 149. She shot the best score in Sunday’s second round with a one-over par 73 to lead the Violets to a third-place finish in the 17-team field.

Men’s Golf

Eric Tarakjian  —  NYU  —  La Jolla, CA (La Jolla)

NYU senior Eric Tarakjian earned individual medalist honors in the 91-player field and led the Violets to the ECAC Division III Mid Atlantic  Championship title with his two-round total of 141. He shot a one-under par 71 on Saturday and followed it up with a two-under par 70 on Sunday. NYU captured its first ECAC title by one stroke over a pair of teams in the 16-team field.

Women’s Soccer — Offense

Jean Chakmakas  —  University of Rochester  —  Latham, NY (Shaker)

Senior midfielder Jean Chakmakas scored twice within nine minutes in the first half as University of Rochester stunned 12th-ranked Washington University 3-1. The three goals marked the most the most the Yellowjackets have scored against the Bears in 22 years. Chakmakas also scored the team’s only goal in a midweek loss to Nazareth College.

Women’s Soccer — Defense

Nikki Batt  —  Emory University  —  Ashburn, VA (Briar Woods)

Sophomore defender Nikki Batt helped Emory University limit fourth-ranked and previously undefeated University of Chicago to just nine total shots, two on goal, in the Eagles’ 2-0 victory on Saturday. Both shot totals represented season-lows for the Maroons. Batt also assisted on the first goal.

Men’s Soccer — Offense

Ben Swanger  —  University of Rochester  —  Penfield, NY (Penfield)

Senior Ben Swanger scored twice as seventh-ranked University of Rochester played ninth-ranked Washington University to a 3-3 tie. He converted a penalty kick in the 15th minute and broke a 2-2 tie with fewer than seven minutes remaining in regulation. The Bears had not yielded a goal in six matches this season.

Nick Knight  —  Washington University  —  Los Angeles, CA (Harvard-Westlake)

Junior back Nick Knight scored a pair of goals as ninth-ranked Washington University rallied for a 3-3 draw with seventh-ranked University of Rochester. He scored the Bears’ first goal in the 56th minute and then netted the game-tying goal in the 85th minute.

Men’s Soccer — Defense

Calvin Boyle  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Chartiers Valley)

Junior goalkeeper Calvin Boyle made 11 saves in 184:46 minutes of play in a 1-1 week for Case Western Reserve University. He stopped a season-high 10 shots as the Spartans upset second-ranked Kenyon College, 1-0 on Tuesday.

Women’s Tennis

Rebecca Ho  —  Washington University  —  Santa Clarita, CA (Golden Valley)

Washington University senior Rebecca Ho captured the ITA Division III Central Region Singles Championship and teamed with senior Kaylan Griffith for the doubles title. Ho defeated University of Chicago first-year player Marjorie Antohi, 6-4, 6-3 in the final, while she and Griffith edged Antohi and classmate Estefania Navarro, 6-4, 6-3 in the doubles championship.

Kaylan Griffith  —  Washington University  —  Carmel, CA (Carmel)

Senior Kaylan Griffith teamed with classmate Rebecca Ho to capture the ITA Division III Central Region Doubles Championship. Griffith and Ho defeated the University of Chicago first-year tandem of Marjorie Antohi and Estefania Navarro, 6-4, 6-3 in the title match.

Men’s Tennis

Michael Rozenvasser  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Haworth, NJ (Northern Valley Regional)

Carnegie Mellon University freshman Michael Rozenvasser captured the ITA Division III Southeast Region Singles Championship. The fifth seed earned a spot in the final with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over a former regional champion from Johns Hopkins University before defeating his Wilkes University opponent, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the championship match.

Aman Manji  —  Emory University  —  Sammamish, WA (Skyline)

Emory University senior Aman Manji captured the ITA Division III South Region Singles Championship, defeating the top two seeds in straight sets in the semifinals and final. The third seed, he earned a spot in the title match with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over the second seed from host Sewanee: The University of the South, and then defeated top-seeded teammate Jonathan Jemison, 6-3, 6-3.

Jonathan Jemison  —  Emory University  —  Marietta, GA (Lassiter)
David Omsky  —  Emory University  —  Aventura, FL (University School)

Sophomore Jonathan Jemison and junior David Omsky teamed up to win the ITA Division III South Region Doubles Championship at Sewanee: The University of the South. The unseeded team, paired for the first time, defeated teammates Aman Manji and Rex Serituk 8-4 in the semifinals before downing a Millsaps College duo, 6-2, 6-4, in the final.

Volleyball

Jessica Holler  —  Emory University  —  Roswell, GA (Blessed Trinity)

Senior Jessica Holler averaged 3.50 kills and 1.40 blocks per set, while posting a .415 hitting percentage to lead seventh-ranked Emory University to a 3-0 record at the first UAA Volleyball Round Robin at Carnegie Mellon University. She recorded 11 kills and seven blocks in the Eagles’ four-set victory over University of Rochester, and then totaled 12 kills each in sweeps of NYU and Case Western Reserve University, hitting .455 against the Spartans.

Sarah Muisenga  —  University of Chicago  —  Wheaton, IL (St. Francis)

Sophomore right-side hitter Sarah Muisenga averaged 4.33 kills and 4.08 digs per set to help University of Chicago finish 3-0 at the first UAA Volleyball Round Robin at Carnegie Mellon University. She recorded 19 kills and 21 digs in the Maroons’ five-set win over the 16th-ranked Tartans and posted a career-high 20 kills in a four-set win over 15th-ranked Washington University.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Niamh O’Grady  —  Washington University  —  Sarasota, FL (Riverview)

Junior Niamh O’Grady won two individual events and swam on a winning relay as Washington University opened its season with a 130-109 victory over NCAA Division I Saint Louis University. She finished first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.92) and 100-yard butterfly (58.23 seconds) and swam on the Bears’ 200-yard freestyle relay that won in a time of 1:38.54.

Emily Ramos  —  Washington University  —  Parkland, FL (Marjory Stoneman Douglas)

Senior diver Emily Ramos won both diving events in a 130-109 Washington University win over NCAA Division I Saint Louis University. She earned scores of 223.2 on the three-meter board and 200.17 in the one-meter event.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Ross Brown  —  Washington University  —  Tampa, FL (Robinson)

Junior Ross Brown placed first in the 50-yard freestyle as Washington University opened its season against NCAA Division I Saint Louis University. He won the race with a time of 21.79 seconds and swam the fastest leg of the Bears’ 200-yard medley relay in 21 seconds. The Bears fell 116-107.

Ryan Nathenson  —  Washington University  —  Newtown, CT (Newtown)

Junior diver Ryan Nathenson posted scores of 216.97 on the one-meter board and 189.07 in the three-meter dive in the Washington University season-opening meet against NCAA Division I Saint Louis University. The Bears were narrowly defeated, 116-107.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
