Athletes of the Week for October 9, 2017
Women’s Cross Country
Sabrina Herrmann — NYU — Rancho Santa Margarita, CA (Trabuco Hills)
Junior Sabrina Herrmann of NYU won the individual title at the Houghton College Highlander Invitational on Saturday. She completed the six-kilometer course in a 22:13.6 to best the field of 147 runners. Herrmann helped lead the Violets to a runner-up finish in the 16-team competition.
Men’s Cross Country
Neil Saddler — NYU — San Diego, CA (Scripps Ranch)
Senior Neil Saddler placed second in the 187-runner field at the Houghton College Highlander Invitational to help lead NYU to the team title in the 16-team event. He traversed the eight-kilometer course in a time of 25:04.4, the second consecutive week he has posted the team’s top time.
Football – Offense
Chandler Carroll — University of Chicago — Alexandria, IN (Yorktown)
University of Chicago senior running back Chandler Carroll scored a career-high four touchdowns, totaling 151 yards of offense, in the Maroons’ 28-8 victory over Lawrence University. He rushed 21 times for 104 yards and three touchdowns, adding five catches for 47 yards and another touchdown.
Jason Singer — Washington University — Darlington, WI (Darlington)
Washington University junior wide receiver Jason Singer hauled in a career-best seven receptions for 130 yards and all three Bears’ touchdowns in a 28-21 loss at Washington and Lee University. He captured scoring passes of 43, 17, and 53 yards.
Football – Defense
Ben Christensen — University of Chicago — Frankfort, IL (Lincoln-Way East)
University of Chicago sophomore defensive lineman Ben Christensen totaled 11 tackles, including three tackles for loss, as the Maroons defeated Lawrence University 28-8. He made four unassisted stops, and finished with nine yards for loss with a sack and pass breakup. The Maroons limited Lawrence to 156 total yards and 2.4 yards per play.
Football – Special Teams
Johnny Davidson — Washington University — Inverness, IL (Barrington)
Washington University sophomore Johnny Davidson booted a 73-yard punt in the first quarter and landed all three of his punts inside the Washington and Lee University 20-yard line in the Bears’ 28-21 loss. He finished the day averaging 52.7 yards per punt and currently ranks 14th in NCAA Division III, averaging 41.4 yards per punt.
Women’s Golf
Alyssa Poentis — NYU — Honolulu, HI (Punahou)
Senior Alyssa Poentis of NYU placed fourth individually in the 94-player field at the Williams College Fall Classic, which featured four of the top 12 teams in NCAA Division III. She shot rounds of 78 and 75 for a two-day total of 153 to help the Violets tie for second place in the 16-team field.
Men’s Golf
Jason Li — Carnegie Mellon University — Sewickley, PA (Sewickley Academy)
Carnegie Mellon University freshman Jason Li carded back-to-back rounds of two-under-par 70 to tie for third place in the 102-player field at the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe University Invitational. Li earned a spot on the All-Invitational Team and helped guide the Tartans to a third-place team finish in the 18-team tournament.
Sam Galloway — Emory University — Neenah, WI (Neenah)
Emory University sophomore Sam Galloway shot a career-best round of 67 in the second round for a two-round total of 140 and a share of third place in the 102-player field at the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe University Invitational. He earned a spot on the All-Invitational Team and led the Eagles to a runner-up team finish in the 18-team tournament.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Allie DeConinck — Washington University — Bloomfield Hills, MI (Marian)
Washington University first-year forward Ellie DeConinck totaled two goals and two assists as the Bears ran their unbeaten streak to 26 games with a pair of victories. She scored once and assisted on another goal in a 4-0 win over Principia College before netting the first goal in a 6-0 Bears’ victory over University of Rochester.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Sierra Dana — Brandeis University — Lombard, IL (Glenbard East)
Brandeis University sophomore goalkeeper Sierra Dana allowed just one goal in 200 minutes in a 1-0-1 week for the Judges. After posting the shutout in a 3-0 win over Lesley University, Dana made a career-high 14 saves in the Judges’ 1-1 draw with Carnegie Mellon University. She made eight saves in the first half and six more in the final 65 minutes against the Tartans.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Seldon Magruder — Case Western Reserve University — Los Angeles, CA (Hamilton)
Freshman forward Seldon Magruder recorded his first multi-goal game with two scores in a 5-1 Case Western Reserve University road win over NYU for its first UAA win of the season. He tallied the game-winning goal in the first half, striking the ball past the Violets’ goalkeeper in the 32nd minute and scored his second goal to close out the scoring.
Moustafa Khattab — Emory University — Toronto, ONT (Toronto French School)
Junior Moustafa Khattab broke a scoreless tie in the 15th minute as Emory University upset top-ranked and previously undefeated University of Chicago, 3-0, on Saturday. He assisted on one goal in the Eagles’ 5-2 victory over Piedmont College.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Ben Woodhouse — Brandeis University — Suffield, CT (Suffield)
Senior goalkeeper Ben Woodhouse made a career-high 11 saves as Brandeis shut out Carnegie Mellon University 2-0 on Saturday. He made 10 saves in the second half.
Women’s Tennis
Bridget Harding — Emory University — Northport, NY (Northport)
Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico — Emory University — Pinecrest, FL (Gulliver Preparatory)
Senior Bridget Harding and first-year teammate Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico of Emory University each reached the final of the main singles draw at the Mercer University Gridiron Classic with three straight-set victories. In doubles, Harding and Gonzalez-Rico added a 2-1 mark with wins over doubles teams from Middle Georgia State University and Jacksonville State University.
Men’s Tennis
Daniel Levine — Carnegie Mellon University — Highland Park, IL (Boca Prep International School)
Carnegie Mellon University junior Daniel Levine captured the ITA Division III Southeast Regional Championship singles title on Tuesday with a straight-set win over freshman teammate Ray Boppana. In Tartan wins over Oberlin College and Christopher Newport University, Levine earned his 100th career combined win, becoming the second fastest player in program history to achieve the feat.
Jeremy Yuan — University of Chicago — Johns Creek, GA (Northview)
University of Chicago freshman Jeremy Yuan captured the ITA Division III Central Regional Championship singles title on Tuesday with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 win over sophomore teammate Erik Kerrigan. Yuan battled back from a 5-3 deficit in the final set. He and sophomore Tyler Raclin earned the regional doubles title the previous weekend.
Volleyball
Audrey Scrafford — University of Chicago — Austin, TX (Lake Travis)
Junior outside hitter Audrey Scrafford of University of Chicago averaged 3.67 kills and hit .391 as the Maroons extended their winning streak to 11 matches with three-set victories over Otterbein University and host Elmhurst College. The Maroons handed Otterbein just their second loss in 20 matches this season.
Emma Griffith — University of Chicago — New York, NY (Calhoun)
First-year setter Emma Griffith averaged 12.00 assists and 2.33 digs per set as the Maroons defeated Otterbein University and host Elmhurst College. She totaled 31 assists, six digs, and two blocks in a three-set win that gave Otterbein only its second loss in 20 matches. Griffith finished with 41 assists and eight digs in another sweep of the Blue Jays.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Nicole Zanolli — Washington University — Menlo Park, CA (Menlo-Atherton)
Washington University senior Nicole Zanolli won the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.60) in a meet with NCAA Division I Saint Louis University. Only three times in NCAA Division III this season have been faster, including one posted by Zanolli in the opening weekend of the season.
Laura Barber — Washington University — Decatur, GA (The Westminster Schools)
Washington University senior Laura Barber earned second- and third-place finishes in a dual meet with NCAA Division I Saint Louis University. She placed second on the three-meter board with a score of 239.40, the second-best in NCAA Division III this season. Barber finished third in the one-meter dive with a mark of 191.10.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Seth Ritter — Washington University — Hudson, IL (Normal Community West)
Washington University freshman Seth Ritter helped the Bears past NCAA Division I Saint Louis University by winning the 500-yard freestyle (4:36.81) and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:25.43). Both times are the top times in NCAA Division III this season.
Ryan Nathenson — Washington University — Newton, CT (Newton)
Washington University senior Ryan Nathenson won both diving events in the Bears’ 155-125 victory over NCAA Division I Saint Louis University. His first-place score of 217.50 on the three-meter board ranks second in NCAA Division III this season. Nathenson captured the one-meter dive with a mark of 217.65.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
