Athletes of the Week for October 16, 2017
Women’s Cross Country
Khia Kurtenbach — University of Chicago — Germantown, WI (Germantown)
University of Chicago senior Khia Kurtenbach finished second in the 332-runner field at the Principia College Cowbell Classic that featured six of the top 10 teams in NCAA Division III. She completed the six-kilometer course, which will be the site of the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships next month, in a time of 21:22.79 as the Maroons placed eighth of 36 teams.
Men’s Cross Country
David O’Gara — Washington University — Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)
Washington University senior David O’Gara ran the fifth best time in the 354-runner field at the Principia College Cowbell Classic that featured 17 of the top 35 programs in NCAA Division III. Competing on the course that will host the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in November, O’Gara covered the eight-kilometer course in 25:03.80.
Football – Offense
Rob Cuda — Case Western Reserve University — Bartlett, IL (South Elgin)
Senior quarterback Rob Cuda threw for five touchdowns and ran for a sixth in the first half of a 63-28 Case Western Reserve University win at Thiel College. He completed 17 of 22 passes for 343 yards, while adding 25 rushing yards. The 300-yard game was Cuda’s third of the season and seventh of his career.
Football – Defense
Michael Prescott — Washington University — Colleyville, TX (Colleyville Heritage)
Sophomore defensive lineman Michael Prescott scored a pair of defensive touchdowns in a 55-20 Washington University victory over Buena Vista University. He recovered a fumble in the end zone in the second quarter and then scored again in the fourth quarter when he recovered a fumble and scampered 20 yards for a touchdown. Prescott added four solo tackles and a tackle for loss.
Football – Special Teams
Rory Hubbard — Carnegie Mellon University — Rolling Hills Estates, CA (Palos Verdes Peninsula)
Junior running back Rory Hubbard recorded 144 kickoff return yards, including a 92-yard return for a touchdown, in a 42-27 Carnegie Mellon University victory over Geneva College. He averaged 48.0 yards per kick return and added three rushes for 20 yards.
Nick Cione — Washington University — San Antonio, TX (Saint Mary’s Hall)
Freshman wide receiver Nick Cione returned four punts for 118 yards, averaging 29.5 yards per return, in a 55-20 Washington University win over Buena Vista University. His 35-yard punt return in the third quarter set up one touchdown and his career-long 51-yarder to the Buena Vista nine-yard line resulted in the final Bears’ touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Women’s Golf
Alyssa Poentis — NYU — Honolulu, HI (Punahou)
NYU senior Alyssa Poentis tied for third place individually in the 51-player NYU Fall Invitational with a two-round score of 156. She opened the tournament by shooting an 80 before firing a second-round 76. Poentis helped lead the Violets to a share of the team title with Williams College.
Patty Treevichaphan — NYU — Bangkok, Thailand (International School of Bangkok)
NYU junior Patty Treevichaphan tied for third place individually in the 51-player NYU Fall Invitational with a two-round score of 156. She shot back-to-back rounds of 78. Treevichaphan helped lead the Violets to a share of the team title with Williams College.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Mia Calamari — University of Chicago — Barrington, IL (Barrington)
Senior midfielder Mia Calamari scored one goal and assisted on another goal as top-ranked University of Chicago remained undefeated with wins over 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University. She assisted on a goal in the Maroons’ 2-0 victory over the Tartans on Friday and then netted the opening goal on a 32-yard strike inside the right post in a 3-0 win over the Spartans on Sunday.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Kelsey Moore — University of Chicago — Scottsdale, AZ (Seton Catholic Prep)
Senior midfielder Kelsey Moore keyed the University of Chicago defense that allowed a combined two shots on goal in a pair of victories over the weekend. As the defensive central midfielder, Moore cut off counter attack runs and consistently stole the ball as the Maroons ran their shutout streak to five matches. She added a goal on a header in a 2-0 win over 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University, the Maroons’ first win over the Tartans in seven years.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Matthew Koh — University of Chicago — Santa Monica, CA (Loyola)
University of Chicago junior forward Matthew Koh tallied two goals and two assists over the weekend as the Maroons topped 20th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University. He scored twice and assisted on the other goal in the Maroons’ 3-0 victory over the Tartans on Friday, and his centering pass into the box allowed Andre Ebedian to score the game-winning header in overtime in a 2-1 win over Case Western Reserve University on Sunday.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Nik Angyal — University of Rochester — Stormville, NY (John Jay)
University of Rochester junior back Nik Angyal played all 180 minutes on the backline in shutout wins over 15th-ranked Brandeis University and NYU. The Yellowjackets limited the Judges to just four shots, one on goal, in a 1-0 victory, and then held the Violets to three shots on goal in a 2-0 win.
Women’s Tennis
Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico — Emory University — Pinecrest, FL (Gulliver Preparatory)
Emory University first-year player Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico reached the ITA Oracle Cup NCAA Division III singles and doubles finals. She posted straight-set wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals in singles, and teamed with senior Bridget Harding for straight-set victories in the doubles quarterfinals and semifinals.
Men’s Tennis
Tyler Raclin — University of Chicago — St. Louis, MO (Mary Institute & St. Louis Country Day)
Jeremy Yuan — University of Chicago — Johns Creek, GA (Northview)
Sophomore Tyler Raclin and freshman Jeremy Yuan became the first University of Chicago duo to win the NCAA Division III doubles title at the ITA Oracle Cup. The fourth seeds opened play with straight-set wins in the quarterfinals before posting back-to-back comeback wins in the semifinals and final. After dropping the first set to a Whitman College team in the semifinals, Raclin and Yuan took the second set 6-3 before taking the third set superbreaker 11-9. In the final, the Maroons’ team lost the first set before taking the final two sets 6-3, 6-4.
Volleyball
Julianne Malek — Washington University — The Woodlands, TX (John Cooper)
Junior middle hitter Julianne Malek hit .402, averaging 3.23 kills and 1.0 blocks per set as Washington University finished 4-0 at the second UAA round robin weekend. She recorded 14 kills, hitting .438, and added four blocks in the Bears’ five-set win over fourth-ranked Emory University. In the Bears’ four-set win over 13th-ranked host University of Chicago, Malek totaled 16 kills and eight blocks.
Kayla Yew — Carnegie Mellon University — San Francisco, CA (Sacred Heart Cathedral)
Sophomore libero Kayla Yew averaged 7.0 digs per set and contributed seven service aces to help lead 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University to a 4-0 mark at the second UAA round robin to earn the top seed for the UAA Volleyball Championship. She recorded a career-high 39 digs in the Tartans’ five-set victory over fourth-ranked Emory University and totaled 32 in the Tartans’ four-set win over 13th-ranked host University of Chicago.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Cindy Cheng — Emory University — Orlando, FL (Dr. Phillips)
Senior Cindy Cheng provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships as Emory University fell to NCAA Division II Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina. She met the NCAA “B” mark by winning the 100-yard backstroke in 55.79 seconds. Cheng tied for second place in the 500-yard freestyle, just missing another NCAA “B” cut with a time of 5:00.96.
Carmen White — NYU — Lake Bluff, IL (Lake Forest)
Sophomore Carmen White won one diving event and finished second in another as NYU defeated Rowan University for its 27th consecutive dual meet victory dating back to 2013-14. She won the one-meter dive with a score of 260.25 and placed second on the three-meter board with 237.40 points.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Tim Kou — NYU — San Jose, CA (Bellarmine College Prep)
Senior Tim Kou won a pair of individual events and swam on a victorious relay as NYU opened the season with a win over Rowan University. He captured the 100-yard breaststroke (56.58 seconds) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:05.71), while helping the Violets’ 200-yard medley relay (1:34.04) to a first-place finish.
Connor Brisson — NYU — Greenwich, CT (Greenwich)
Junior Connor Brisson swept the diving events as NYU defeated Rowan University to open the 2017-18 season. He posted the top UAA scores this season on both the one- (321.65) and three-meter (336.35) boards.
Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
