Athletes of the Week for October 24, 2016

Football — Offense

Kevin Hammarlund  —  Washington University  —  Arlington Heights, IL (Saint Viator)

Washington University senior wide receiver Kevin Hammarlund caught nine passes for 148 yards and a touchdown to lead the Bears to a 31-28 victory over Millsaps College. His 59-yard scoring reception with 8:58 left in the fourth quarter gave the Bears the lead for good. Hammarlund surpassed the 100-yard receiving mark for the fourth consecutive game.

Football — Defense

Cameron Brown  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Westlake, OH (Westlake)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore defensive end Cameron Brown recorded 10 tackles, including seven solo hits, in the Spartans’ 16-14 win over Geneva College. He added two tackles for loss with one sack, forced a pair of fumbles, and recovered one. Brown registered the sack and the fumble recovery in the fourth quarter alone to help the Spartans secure the victory.

Football — Special Teams

Jared Lake  —  Washington University  —  Cartersville, KY (Rockcastle County)

Washington University junior defensive lineman Jared Lake blocked a 29-yard field goal with 39 seconds remaining to secure a 31-28 victory at Millsaps College. He contributed three solo tackles and also blocked an extra point in the first quarter.

Women’s Soccer — Offense

Jenna McKinney  —  University of Chicago  —  Tampa, FL (Henry B. Plant)

University of Chicago sophomore midfielder Jenna McKinney scored three goals and added an assist in two Maroons’ wins. She tallied twice in a 4-0 Chicago win over Illinois Institute of Technology on Thursday and finished with a goal and an assist in Sunday’s 4-0 victory over Concordia University Wisconsin.

Women’s Soccer — Defense

Sarah Newcomb  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Chagrin Falls, OH (Kenston)

Case Western Reserve University junior goalkeeper Sarah Newcomb made four saves to record her fourth shutout of the season in the Spartans’ 1-0 win at College of Wooster on Saturday. She leads the UAA with 59 saves this season.

Men’s Soccer — Offense

Elliot Cohen  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Solana Beach, CA (Canyon Crest Academy)

Freshman Elliot Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University scored twice in a seven-minute span in the first half in a 5-0 win over La Roche College. He netted his goals in the seventh and 14th minutes.

Brenton-Neal Desai  —  University of Chicago  —  Brighton, MI (Detroit Country Day)

University of Chicago senior Brenton-Neal Desai extended his scoring streak to three matches with a pair of goals in a 3-0 Maroons’ win over Aurora University on Sunday. The output marked his seventh career multiple goal effort.

Men’s Soccer — Defense

Stacey Reimann  —  University of Chicago  —  Vestavia Hills, AL (Vestavia Hills)

Junior back Stacey Reimann keyed the University of Chicago defense that tied program records for wins (15) and shutouts (11) with a 3-0 victory over Aurora University on Sunday. The Maroons limited Aurora to just three shots with one shot on goal in each half.

Women’s Tennis

Sabrina Ross Neergaard  —  Brandeis University  —  Port Orchard, WA (Laurel Spring Prep)

First-year competitor Sabrina Ross Neergaard of Brandeis University earned two wins over opponents from top-10 teams at the Middlebury College Invitational. She recorded a 6-4, 4-6 (4-7), 10-7 win over an opponent from third-ranked Middlebury at second singles and a straight-set win over her opponent from seventh-ranked Amherst College at the top spot.

Volleyball

Caroline Dupont  —  Washington University  —  Leawood, KS (Blue Valley North)

Washington University senior Caroline Dupont averaged 3.27 kills and 1.87 blocks to lead Washington University to a 3-1 record at its own Active Ankle Invitational. She hit .375 in the four matches to earn all-tournament honors. Dupont recorded 11 kills, hit .455, and added six blocks to lead the Bears to a sweep of third-ranked Wittenberg University.

Emily Newton  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Manhattan Beach, CA (Chadwick School)

Carnegie Mellon University setter Emily Newton averaged 9.90 assists and 2.40 digs as the Tartans finished 3-0 in their own Mini Invitational. She also hit .429 with nine kills and no errors in the three matches. Newton totaled 40 assists, nine digs, four kills, and three blocks in the Tartans’ four-set win over Messiah College, which entered the match with a 21-4 record.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Cindy Cheng  —  Emory University  —  Orlando, FL (Dr. Phillips Center)

Emory University junior Cindy Cheng recorded two individual NCAA Division III “B” cut times as the Eagles defeated defending NCAA Division II national champions Queens University of Charlotte 136-126. She won the 100-yard backstroke (55.17 seconds) and 200-yard backstroke (2:01.91), and also swam the first leg of the 400-yard medley relay team that met the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark with a time of 3:50.73.

Danielle Neu  —  University of Rochester  —  Hammondsport,  NY (Haverling)

University of Rochester senior diver Danielle Neu met the NCAA Division III regional qualifying mark with a score of 269.8 on the three-meter board on Saturday against NCAA Division I Canisius College. She placed second in the one-meter dive with 250.80 points.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Andrew Wilson  —  Emory University  —  Bethesda, MD (Phillips Academy, MA)

Emory University senior Andrew Wilson notched three individual victories and swam on a winning relay in his return to the team to lead the Eagles to a 153-109 win over reigning NCAA Division II national champions Queens University of Charlotte. He provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.87 seconds) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:03.00). Wilson finished first in the 200-yard individual medley (1:54.41) and swam the second leg of the 400-yard medley relay that met the NCAA “B” standard with a time of 3:20.13.

Stephen Savchik  —  University of Rochester  —  Pittsburgh, PA (North Allegheny)

University of Rochester freshman diver Stephen Savchik swept the diving events in the Yellowjackets’ 183-82 win over UAA rival Brandeis University on Friday. He posted a score of 264.47 on the one-meter board and 247.65 on the three-meter board. 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
