Athletes of the Week for October 28, 2019

Football – Offense

Colt Morgan  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Wooster, OH (Wooster)

Junior wide receiver Colt Morgan caught 10 passes for 111 yards and one touchdown as Case Western Reserve University defeated visiting Geneva College, 30-23. Drew Saxton threw a 30-yard score to Morgan with 2:34 remaining in the first quarter to give the Spartans a 14-7 lead.

Football – Defense

John Christensen  —  Washington University  —  Frankfort, IL (Lincoln-Way East)

Sophomore linebacker John Christensen made a career-high 16 tackles as Washington University recorded its first shutout since 2013 in a 21-0 win at Illinois Wesleyan University. He recorded 2.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, a sack, and his first career interception to lead the Bears’ defense that limited Illinois Wesleyan to 161 yards of total offense.

Football – Special Teams

Johnny Davidson  —  Washington University —  Inverness, IL (Barrington)

Senior punter Johnny Davidson averaged 37.9 yards on 10 punts in a 21-0 Washington University victory over Illinois Wesleyan University. He booted a season-long 59-yarder and landed four punts inside the 20-yard line.

Men’s Golf

Michael Rosenbloom  —  Emory University  —  Wellesley, MA (Wellesley)

Emory University freshman Michael Rosenbloom earned co-medalist honors at the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational in Rome, Georgia. He shot an even-par 144 with rounds of 70 and 74 on the par-72 Stonebridge Golf Club, leading the Eagles to an eighth-place finish in the 19-team field.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Alex Adams  — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (North Allegheny)

Carnegie Mellon University first-year forward Alex Adams scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime of a 2-1 win over regionally ranked Nazareth College. She also assisted on the first goal of the game.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Emma Smith  —  University of Chicago  —  Westminster, CO (Standley Lake)

University of Chicago sophomore goalkeeper Emma Smith earned a shutout in her first career start, a 1-0  win at Illinois Institute of Technology. She made three stops, including two on open rushes in the second half.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Tony Hypsher  — University of Rochester  —  Keenesaw, GA (Marietta)

University of Rochester freshman Tony Hypsher scored the only goal in the Yellowjackets’ 1-0 win over Endicott College on Saturday. He executed a long breakaway run up the left side and deposited the ball in the back of the net in the 61st minute.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Greg Irwin  — Brandeis University  —  Passaic, NJ (Seton Hall Prep)

Brandeis University senior goalkeeper Greg Irwin made a career-high nine saves in a 2-0 Judges’ win over Springfield College. He made three stops in the opening half before making six saves in the second half to record his 13th career shutout.

Volleyball

Leah Saunders  —  Emory University  —  Simpsonville, SC (St. Joseph’s Catholic)

Emory University junior Leah Saunders earned Most Valuable Player honors at the Eagles’ home tournament. She posted a .405 hitting percentage with 3.67 kills per set, adding 3.17 digs per set. Saunders posted three consecutive double-doubles, including 19 kills and 12 digs in a four-set win over seventh-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Madison Pearson  —  University of Chicago  —  Edmond, OK (Edmond North)

University of Chicago senior Madison Pearson hit .556 in a 3-0 week for the Maroons, their first as the top-ranked team in the nation. She averaged 2.7 kills, and 1.0 blocks per set. Pearson totaled 11 kills, five blocks, and five digs in a four-set victory at 20th-ranked Hope College, who upended second-ranked Calvin College the previous day.

Emma Griffith  —  University of Chicago  —  New York, NY (Calhoun)

University of Chicago junior setter Emma Griffith, who leads the nation in assists per set, averaged 11.3 assists and 2.9 digs per set in three more Maroons’ wins. She totaled 44 assists and 14 digs in a four-set win at 20th-ranked Hope College, who upended second-ranked Calvin College the previous day.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Caroline Olson  —  Emory University  —  Atlanta, GA (Druid Hills)

Senior Caroline Olson earned two individual wins and swam on a victorious relay to lead Emory University to a dual meet victory over Birmingham-Southern College. She captured the 100-yard butterfly (57.79 seconds) and the 50-yard freestyle (24.42 seconds), and was part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:39.18). Olson added a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (53.74 seconds).

Carmen White  —  NYU  —  Lake Bluff, IL (Lake Forest)

Senior Carmen White swept the diving events in a 199-101 NYU win over Rowan University. She finished first on the one-meter board (313.28) and in the three-meter event (294.45).

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Justin Britton  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Falls Church, VA (George Mason)

Junior Justin Britton earned a pair of victories in two of the top NCAA Division III times of the fall as Carnegie Mellon University defeated UAA rival Case Western Reserve University on Saturday. He led off the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 23.73 seconds in the 50-yard portion of the backstroke, which ranks third in the nation. Britton won the 100-yard backstroke in 50.51 seconds, which is the top time in the nation, and added a victory in the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.37), which ranks 14th this season.

Lucas Bumgarner  — Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)

Sophomore Lucas Bumgarner posted two NCAA Division III regional qualifying marks in both diving events as Emory University defeated Birmingham-Southern College on Saturday. He set the program record in the one-meter, six-dive event with a score of 334.20 and then added another qualifying mark on the three-meter board with a score of 357.15.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
