Athletes of the Week for October 31, 2016
Women’s Cross Country
Aly Wayne — Washington University — Lowell, MA (Phillips Academy Andover)
Washington University junior Aly Wayne finished more than 20 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor to earn Runner of the Year honors at the 2016 UAA Cross Country Championships hosted by Emory University. She covered the six-kilometer course in 21:25.29 and helped the Bears capture their 15th Association title.
Men’s Cross Country
David O’Gara — Washington University — Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)
Washington University junior David O’Gara finished first individually in a field of 76 at the 2016 UAA Cross Country Championships hosted by Emory University. He posted a winning time of 24:44.48 over the eight-kilometer course to help the Bears share the team title with Carnegie Mellon University.
Football — Offense
Rob Cuda — Case Western Reserve University — Bartlett, IL (South Elgin)
Junior quarterback Rob Cuda recorded 463 yards of total offense to lead Case Western Reserve University to a 56-38 win at Washington University to clinch at least a share of its sixth UAA title. He completed 20 of 33 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns, and carried the ball 23 times for a career-high 191 yards. Cuda led the Spartans to eight touchdowns and 707 yards of total offense.
Burke Moser — University of Chicago — Pittsburgh, PA (Quaker Valley)
Senior quarterback Burke Moser smashed five records in a 49-30 University of Chicago victory over Sewanee: The University of the South. He completed 26 of 42 passes for single-game school records of 558 yards and seven touchdowns. Moser also broke program single-season marks of 2,681 yards, 24 passing touchdowns, and 406 pass attempts.
Football — Defense
Brian Khoury — Carnegie Mellon University — Davenport, IA (Bettendorf)
Senior defensive end Brian Khoury recorded 2.5 sacks in his final home game as Carnegie Mellon University handed Westminster College just its second loss of the season with a 35-23 victory. He finished with six tackles and totaled 16 yards of loss with his sacks. Khoury ranks first in the UAA and seventh in NCAA Division III with 10.5 sacks this season.
Adrian Cannon — Case Western Reserve University — Lake View, NY (Frontier Central)
Junior cornerback Adrian Cannon recorded eight tackles, an interception, and three pass breakups as Case Western Reserve garnered at least a share of the UAA title with a 56-38 road win over Washington University. His third interception of the season came in the first quarter and led to the Spartans’ go-ahead touchdown. Cannon set career-highs in tackles and pass breakups.
Football — Special Teams
Johnny Davidson — Washington University — Inverness, IL (Barrington)
Freshman punter Johnny Davidson punted six times for an averaged of 44.7 yards in a 56-38 Washington University loss to Case Western Reserve University. He landed three punts inside the Spartans’ 20-yard line, including one downed at the one-yard line.
Women’s Soccer — Offense
Katie Chandler — Washington University — Fall City, WA (Holy Names Academy)
Washington University senior forward Katie Chandler scored a pair of game-winning goals as the 11th-ranked Bears moved into first place in the UAA standings. She scored the only goal in the 60th minute in a 1-0 win at 18th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Friday and found the net in the 37th minute in a 3-0 Bears’ victory over Case Western Reserve University on Sunday.
Women’s Soccer — Defense
Lizzy Crist — Washington University — Wayzata, MN (Minnetonka)
Washington University senior goalkeeper Lizzy Crist posted a pair of shutouts to guide the 11th-ranked Bears to first place in the UAA standings. She recorded four saves in a 1-0 Bears’ victory at 18th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Friday and four more saves in a 3-0 win over Case Western Reserve University on Sunday. Crist has not allowed a goal in 436 minutes, spanning five games.
Men’s Soccer — Offense
Josh Ocel — Brandeis University — North Attleboro, MA (Worcester Academy)
Senior midfielder Josh Ocel assisted on five of seven Brandeis University goals in a 3-0 week, including four in UAA play. He registered two assists in the Judges’ 2-0 win over Emory University on Friday and 3-1 victory over 16th-ranked University of Rochester on Sunday. Ocel took the UAA lead in assists and became the third player in program history with 30 career assists.
Men’s Soccer — Defense
Hill Bonin — University of Chicago — Lone Tree, CO (Rock Canyon)
Junior goalkeeper Hill Bonin set a single-season University of Chicago record with his 12th shutout as the Maroons clinched the UAA title with a 2-0 victory at Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday. He made six saves in that game and made two in a scoreless draw with Case Western Reserve University on Friday, as Bonin became the Maroons’ all-time leader in career shutouts with 23.
Volleyball
Jessica Holler — Emory University — Roswell, GA (Blessed Trinity)
Emory University senior Jessica Holler was named Most Valuable Player of the Emory National Invitational, averaging 2.83 kills, 1.50 blocks, and 1.33 digs per set as the Eagles won all 12 sets in four wins over regionally ranked opponents. She hit .563 (10-1-16) with a season-high eight blocks against Randolph-Macon College. Holler leads the eighth-ranked Eagles in kills, hitting percentage, and blocks.
Aimee Kohler — University of Rochester — Nazareth, PA (Nazareth)
University of Rochester senior setter Aimee Kohler earned all-tournament honors at the New York Regional Challenge. In a 3-1 week for the Yellowjackets, she averaged 10.7 assists and 1.92 digs per set, adding 12 kills (.471 hitting percentage), seven blocks, and six service aces. Kohler totaled 34 assists and eight digs in a sweep of regionally ranked Montclair State University and contributed 36 assists in a close three-set loss to Stevens Institute of Technology, the top-ranked team in the New York Region.
Women’s Fencing
Jacqueline Tubbs — NYU — Elk Grove Village, IL (Elk Grove)
Sophomore Jacqueline Tubbs placed seventh of 75 fencers in the sabre in NYU’s season-opener at the Temple University Open. She won all four of her bouts in the first round and three more in the second round to advance to direct elimination.
Men’s Fencing
Grant Williams — NYU — Atlanta, GA (The Galloway School)
Sophomore Grant Williams captured the sabre event as NYU began its season at the Temple University Open after placing second in the weapon in last year’s event. He won four of five bouts in each of the first two rounds to advance to direct elimination. He reeled off five consecutive victories to advance to the final for the second consecutive year, this time winning the title with a 15-14 win.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Audrey Mason — University of Chicago — Parkland, FL (American Heritage School)
University of Chicago first-year swimmer Audrey Mason won the 500-yard freestyle and 1,000-yard freestyle as the Maroons finished first in its own quad meet with Wheaton College (IL), Oliver Nazarene University, and NCAA Division I Boston College. She won the 500 free in 5:17.60 and then finished first in the 1,000 free by more than 21 seconds in 10:45.26. The Maroons’ win over Boston College marked their first win over a Division I team since becoming a Division III program.
Anna Girlich — University of Chicago — Orland Park, IL (Carl Sandburg)
University of Chicago sophomore Anna Girlich achieved NCAA Division III regional qualifying scores in both diving events as the Maroons finished first in its own quad meet with Wheaton College (IL), Oliver Nazarene University, and NCAA Division I Boston College. She finished first on the three-meter board (267.15) and second in the one-meter event (255.20).
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Michael Lagieski — Washington University — Menesha, WI (Menesha)
Senior Michael Lagieski helped lead Washington University to dual meet victories over DePauw University and Albion College. He finished first in the 100-yard (57.32 seconds) and 200-yard (2:10.75) breaststroke events.
Stephen Savchik — University of Rochester — Pittsburgh, PA (North Allegheny)
Freshman diver Stephen Savchik of University of Rochester met the NCAA Division III regional qualifying standard on the one-meter board with a winning score of 282.00 in the Yellowjackets’ 152-142 victory over Hartwick College. He placed second in the three-meter event with 224.69 points.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
