Athletes of the Week for January 9, 2017

Women’s Basketball

Hillary Hellmann  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Lakeside Park, KY (Notre Dame Academy)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard/forward Hillary Hellman scored 31 of her career-high 35 points in the second half to lead the Spartans to an 87-78 road win over 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday. She connected on six of nine 3-pointers, added six rebounds, and matched a career-high with four steals.

Alexandra Leslie  —  University of Rochester  —  Lancaster, PA (Manheim Township)

University of Rochester junior forward Alexandra Leslie averaged 30.0 points and 17.5 rebounds while shooting 13-13 from the line in a pair of Yellowjacket wins. She scored 15 of her 31 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 15 rebounds in an 84-75 win over Emory University in the UAA opener for both teams. Earlier in the week, she totaled 29 points and 20 boards in a 72-62 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology.

Men’s Basketball

Mack Montague  —  University of Rochester  —  Westport, CT (Suffield Academy)

University of Rochester senior guard Mack Montague averaged 21.5 points as the Yellowjackets opened UAA play with a win over defending Association champion Emory University and came back from a 10-point deficit to defeat Rochester Institute of Technology. He led all scorers with 19 points against the Eagles and netted 22 of his 24 points in the second half against the Tigers. Montague sunk five three-pointers in the win over RIT.

Jack Serbin  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  New Albany, OH (New Albany)

Carnegie Mellon University senior forward Jack Serbin scored 23 points and pulled down 20 rebounds to lead the Tartans to a 78-61 win over Case Western Reserve University on Saturday. He added four assists, two steals, and two blocks. Serbin contributed 12 rebounds in just 19 minutes of the Tartans’ 89-66 victory over State University of New York at Brockport.

Women’s Fencing

Audrey Edgington  —  NYU  —  Montclair, NJ (Montclair)
Maria Free  —  NYU  —  Boerne, TX (Keystone School)
Oliwia Szumilo  —  NYU  —  Staten Island, NY (College of Staten Island HS for Int’l Studies)
Jacqueline Tubbs  —  NYU  —  Elk Grove Village, IL (Elk Grove)

The NYU sabre team of Audrey Edgington, Maria Free, Oliwia Szumilo, and Jacqueline Tubbs combined for a third-place finish in the senior women’s team sabre at the North American Cup in Columbus, Ohio. The third-seeded squad earned the bronze medal with a 45-28 victory over its fifth-seeded teammates.

Men’s Fencing

Mickey Bak  —  NYU  —  Linden, NJ (Academy for Information Technology)

Sophomore Mickey Bak of NYU finished third of 180 competitors in the junior men’s sabre competition at the North American Cup in Columbus, Ohio. He was also part of the sabre team that placed first of nine teams.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Cindy Cheng  —  Emory University  —  Orlando, FL (Dr. Phillips)

Emory University junior Cindy Cheng provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships by winning two individual events in the Eagles’ 173-86 win over NCAA Division II Florida Southern College. She won the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.55) and 200-yard backstroke (2:03.24) and also swam on the Eagles’ victorious 200-yard medley relay that touched in a NCAA qualifying time of 1:41.74.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Oliver Smith  —  Emory University  —  Milan, MI (Milan)

Emory University junior Oliver Smith won one event and swam on two first-place relays to help lead the Eagles to their first-ever win over NCAA Division II Florida Southern College with a score of 135-127. He provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship with a winning time of 20.69 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and swam the anchor leg of the 200-yard medley relay that won with a NCAA qualifying time of 1:31.65. Smith swam the second leg on the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:24.15 to clinch the victory for the Eagles.

Wrestling

Sean Lyons  —  NYU  —  Sewall, NJ (St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, PA)

NYU freshman Sean Lyons won all three of his matches at 141 pounds at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals on Thursday and Friday in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He picked up bonus points for the team in each victory and recorded his team-best ninth pin of the season on Thursday against his Baldwin Wallace University opponent.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
