Athletes of the Week for November 6, 2017
Women’s Cross Country
Paige Lawler — Washington University — Lexington, MA (Lexington)
Sophomore Paige Lawler of Washington University claimed first place at the North Central College Red & White Open, outracing the runner-up by more than 40 seconds with a three-mile time of 17:12.3. The Bears finished first in the eight-team meet.
Men’s Cross Country
Julian Marrufo — NYU — Sugarland, TX (George Ranch)
Junior Julian Marrufo helped lead NYU to the team title at the ECAC Championship on Saturday with a third-place individual finish. He covered the six-kilometer course in a time of 27:36.1.
Football – Offense
Jacob Burke — Case Western Reserve University — Johnstown, OH (Northridge)
Case Western Reserve University senior running back Jacob Burke rushed 26 times for 160 yards and three touchdowns as the Spartans remained undefeated with a 41-10 win over visiting Westminster College. He scored twice in the first quarter and once in the second quarter. Burke surpassed the 2,000-yard mark for his career and moved into second place in program history with 33 touchdowns.
Chandler Carroll — University of Chicago — Alexandria, IN (Yorktown)
University of Chicago senior running back Chandler Carroll rushed 46 times for 249 yards and one touchdown as the Maroons defeated Macalester College 19-14. He scored on a 25-yard run in the third quarter and surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the third consecutive season.
Football – Defense
Zach Atiyeh — University of Chicago — Addison, IL (Addison Trail)
University of Chicago sophomore linebacker Zach Atiyeh recorded nine tackles, including a sack, in the Maroons’ 19-14 victory over Macalester College. He finished with 1.5 tackles for loss for a defensive unit that held the Scotts to 220 total yards, including -42 rushing yards.
Football – Special Teams
Mike Kurzydlowski — University of Chicago — South Barrington, IL (Loyola Academy)
Junior placekicker Mike Kurzydlowski converted all four of his field goal attempts in a 19-14 University of Chicago win over Macalester College. His longest field goal was from 38 yards and he added a 51-yard punt that pinned the Scots on their own one-yard line.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Darcy Cunningham — Washington University — West Chicago, IL (St. Charles East)
Washington University junior midfielder Darcy Cunningham scored once and assisted on the other goal as the Bears earned a share of the UAA title with a come-from-behind 2-1 road win over previously undefeated University of Chicago. She tied the game with a goal from outside the box at 67:10 and assisted on the game-winning score 41 seconds later.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Hannah Menard — Washington University — Winter Park, FL (Lake Highland Prep)
Sophomore back Hannah Menard led the Washington University defense that limited top-ranked University of Chicago to a season-low nine shots in the Bears’ 2-1 win on Saturday. The Maroons entered the contest averaging 3.67 goals and 24.7 shots per game.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Christian Meyer — Emory University — Hinsdale, IL (Hinsdale Central)
Senior forward Christian Meyer celebrated Emory University’s Senior Day by scoring the golden goal to give the Eagles a 3-2 win over University of Rochester. The Eagles trailed 1-0 and 2-1 before scoring late in regulation to send the game into overtime.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Alex Walter — Brandeis University — Londonberry, NH (Lawrence Academy)
Brandeis University sophomore midfielder Alex Walter helped the Judges hold NYU to eight shots, two on goal, in the Judges’ 1-0 victory over NYU. He added an assist on Andrew Allen’s goal in the 47th minute.
Volleyball
Julianne Malek — Washington University — The Woodlands, TX (John Cooper)
Junior middle hitter Julianne Malek led Washington University to its 22nd UAA volleyball title, hitting .507 in the Bears’ 4-0 week. She averaged 3.00 kills per set, totaling 14 kills with a .542 hitting percentage in the Bears’ four-set victory over host and seventh-ranked Emory University in the championship final.
Zoe Baxter — Washington University — Los Angeles, CA (Harvard-Westlake)
Sophomore Zoe Baxter led Washington University to its 22nd UAA volleyball title as her key digs routinely stopped opposing offenses. She finished a four-match week with 63 digs and 11 assists, contributing 21 digs in the Bears’ four-set victory over host and seventh-ranked Emory University in the championship final.
Women’s Fencing
Joanne Carminucci — Brandeis University — Brewster, NY (North Salem)
Junior Joanne Carminucci earned the foil gold medal in the Brandeis University season opener at the New England Fall Intercollegiate Tournament. She earned the fourth seed with a 6-0 mark and a plus-24 indicator in pool play. Carminucci picked up five consecutive wins, including a 15-6 semifinal victory over the top seed.
Men’s Fencing
Ian Quin — Brandeis University — Ramsey, NJ (Ramsey)
Sophomore Ian Quin earned a gold medal in the foil in the Brandeis University season opener at the New England Fall Intercollegiate Tournament. He earned the sixth seed with a 6-0 record and a plus-21 indicator in pool play. Quin picked up five consecutive wins, including two victories over teammates and a 15-6 win in the final over his opponent from Boston University.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Cindy Cheng — Emory University — Orlando, FL (Dr. Phillips)
Emory University Cindy Cheng provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in two events, winning four individual events, as the Eagles won their home invitational. She met NCAA “B” cuts in the 100- (57.10 seconds) and 200-yard backstroke (2:02.83) events, while also finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.02) and 500-yard freestyle (5:02.19). Cheng swam on the Eagles’ winning 200-yard medley relay (1:48.77).
Agnes Lo — University of Chicago — Fremont, CA (Mission San Jose)
Sophomore Agnes Lo of University of Chicago met the NCAA Division III regional qualifying mark in both diving events in the Maroons’ 184-116 dual meet win over Washington University. She broke the program record on the one-meter board with a score of 284.60 and won the three-meter diving event with a mark of 269.85.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Ian Rainey — NYU — Westport, CT (Staples)
Senior Ian Rainey of NYU swam the fastest 200-yard individual medley time in NCAA Division III this season in the Violets’ victory over Stevens Institute of Technology. His time of 1:52.61 leads the nation by more than two seconds. Rainey also captured the 200-yard butterfly in 1:51.31.
Seth Ritter — Washington University — Hudson, IL (Normal Community West)
Freshman Seth Ritter provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships and swam the fastest time in NCAA Division III this season in the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:55.71) in the Bears’ 180-108 win over University of Chicago. He also finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:39.53).
Connor Brisson — NYU — Greenwich, CT (Greenwich)
Senior Connor Brisson swept the one- and three-meter dives as NYU topped Stevens Institute of Technology. His score of 402.68 on the three-meter board ranks second in NCAA Division III this season. Brisson scored 318.23 in the one-meter event.
Wrestling
Matt Noble — NYU — Bridgewater, NJ (DePaul Catholic)
Sophomore Matt Noble of NYU dominated the 133-pound bracket at the Ned McGinley Invitational hosted by King’s College on Saturday. He won all four of his bouts, posting a first period pin en route to his first title for the Violets, who won the season-opening event after finishing fifth last season.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
