Athletes of the Week for November 12, 2018

Women’s Cross Country

Emily Bryson  —  Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Senior Emily Bryson helped Brandeis University return to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships for the first time since 2013 with her runner-up finish at the New England Cross Country Regional Championships. She covered the six-kilometer course in a personal-best time of 21:03.79. The second-place individual finish was the Judges’ best since 2002.

Men’s Cross Country

Brad Hodkinson  —  Washington University  —  Snohomish, WA (Snohomish)

Washington University senior Brad Hodkinson ran his fastest eight-kilometer race as a Bear and claimed the individual title at the Midwest Cross Country Regional Championships. His winning time of 24:31.8 helped the Bears to a third-place team finish, which resulted in an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.

Football – Offense

Chris Haas  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Coronado, CA (Coronado)

Carnegie Mellon University junior Chris Haas rushed for a career-high 218 yards to lead the Tartans to a 29-23 overtime win at 19th-ranked Case Western Reserve University to secure the UAA title. He scored two touchdowns, including the game-winner as he accounted for all 25 of the Tartans’ yards in overtime. Haas posted back-to-back eight-yard rushes before going in for the winning score.

Football – Defense

Anthony Kennon  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Lancaster, MA (Nashoba Regional)

Carnegie Mellon University junior cornerback Anthony Kennon recorded seven tackles and two interceptions as the Tartans captured the UAA title with a 29-23 overtime win at 19th-ranked Case Western Reserve University. His second interception came in the end zone in overtime and kept the game tied before the Tartans took possession.

Football – Special Teams

Robertson Albrecht  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Aurora, OH (Aurora)

Case Western Reserve University freshman kicker Robertson Albrecht hit three field goals and finished his rookie campaign 9-for-9 in field goals with 75 total points. He connected from 21 and 31 yards in the first quarter and his 18-yarder with 5:50 remaining in regulation helped send the game into overtime. 

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Taylor Cohen  —  Washington University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Junior forward Taylor Cohen netted three goals, including the opening score in both contests, as top-ranked Washington University advanced to the sectional round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. She netted a goal in the Bears’ 5-0 win over Westminster College on Saturday and scored a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of a 3-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University on Sunday.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Hannah Menard  —  Washington University  —  Winter Park, FL (Lake Highland Prep)

Senior back Hannah Menard anchored the top-ranked Washington University defense in a pair of shutouts in the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. She and the Bears’ backline allowed just one shot on goal in the two matches, none in a 5-0 win over Westminster College and one in a 3-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Zachary Senft  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Bay Village, OH (St. Ignatius)

Case Western Reserve University junior forward Zachary Senft scored three goals and contributed an assist to lead the 19th-ranked Spartans to two wins and a spot in the sectional round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship. He assisted on the game-tying goal early in the second half and scored in the 79th minute and again in the 89th minute of a 3-1 win over Keystone College on Saturday. Senft netted the Spartans’ second goal in a 3-0 victory over Capital University on Sunday.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Patrick Conway  —University of Rochester  —  Acton, MA (Acton-Boxborough)

University of Rochester senior goalkeeper Patrick Conway posted back-to-back shutouts to help the Yellowjackets advance to the sectional round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship for the second consecutive season. He made four stops in a 2-0 win over State University of New York at Brockport in the second round, finishing with five saves in the two wins.

Volleyball

Sydney Leimbach  —  Emory University  —  Atlanta, GA (Marist)

Senior middle Sydney Leimbach was named to the NCAA Division III Volleyball Mount Berry Regional All-Tournament Team after helping lead Emory University to the regional title. She averaged 3.89 kills with a .564 hitting percentage as the Eagles swept all three matches. Leimbach hit .500 with nine kills in a win over fourth-ranked Colorado College in the regional semifinal and then recorded a career-high tying 16 kills in the final against 22nd-ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Mady Arles  —  Emory University  —  Richmond, VA (St. Catherine’s School)

Senior setter Mady Arles was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Mount Berry Regional after guiding Emory University to the regional title. She averaged 13.78 assists and 0.78 blocks per set, adding 10 service aces as the Eagles did not drop a set in three matches. She registered 42 assists and a match-high five aces in a semifinal win over fourth-ranked Colorado College before totaling 46 assists, two aces, and three block assists in the final against 22nd-ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Women’s Basketball

Taylor Lake — University of Chicago  —  Mars, PA (North Allegheny)

Junior forward Taylor Lake averaged 16.0 points and 9.0 rebounds, shooting 51.7 percent from the floor, as University of Chicago opened the season with two wins. She totaled 17 points, nine boards, three steals, and two assists in the Maroons’ 77-76 road win over 10th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University. Lake began the season with 15 points, nine rebounds, and four steals in an 85-63 win over Lake Forest College.

Men’s Basketball

Michael Hollis — Case Western Reserve University  —  Cleveland, OH (St. Ignatius)

Case Western Reserve University junior forward Michael Hollis did not miss a shot from the field or free throw line, netting a career-high 23 points in the Spartans’ season-opening 89-80 win over Albion College. He made all seven of his field goal attempts and all nine of his free throws. Hollis, who scored 10 points in the final five minutes, added nine rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block in the win.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Maddie Mianzo —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Pittsbugh, PA (North Allegheny)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Maddie Mianzo earned wins in both diving events in the Tartans’ dual meet loss to Washington and Lee University. She posted scores of 289.65 on the one-meter board and 285.08 in the three-meter event, meeting the NCAA Division III diving regional standards for the first time this season.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Richard Dauksher  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Fort Collins, CO (Fossil Ridge)

Freshman Richard Dauksher won three events in his second collegiate appearance to lead Carnegie Mellon University to a dual meet win over Washington and Lee University. He finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.28), 500-yard freestyle (4:39.88), and the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.48).

Gabe Bamforth  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Cambridge, MA (Cambridge Rindge & Latin School)

Senior Gabe Bamforth swept the diving events in a Carnegie Mellon University dual meet win over Washington and Lee University. His score of 357.30 was his career-best six-dive mark on the one-meter board, while his 356.85 score in the three-meter event nearly matched his career-best.

Wrestling

Sean Lyons  —  NYU  —  Sewell, NJ (St. Joseph’s Prep)

Junior Sean Lyons of NYU won all five of his bouts to take the 157-pound title at the Roger Williams University Invitational. He won one match by fall and two by major decision, including an 18-4 victory in the final over his opponent from the host school, who entered the tournament ranked seventh in the nation in the weight class.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
