Athletes of the Week for November 27, 2017
Football – Offense
Justin Phan — Case Western Reserve University — Atlanta, GA (Greater Atlanta Christian)
Case Western Reserve University junior wide receiver Justin Phan caught 12 passes for a career-high 169 yards in the Spartan’s 45-16 loss to second-ranked University of Mount Union in the second round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship. He made a season-long 60-yard catch that set up one of the team’s two touchdowns. Phan finished the season with 62 receptions for 778 yards and seven touchdowns.
Women’s Basketball
Makayla Filiere — Carnegie Mellon University — Chandler, AZ (Hamilton)
Sophomore Makayla Filiere averaged 22.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, shooting 65.0 percent from the floor, as Carnegie Mellon University posted three double-digit victories. She scored 22 points in back-to-back games, a 73-36 win at Bethany College and a 73-53 neutral site victory over Wittenberg University. Filiere netted a career-high 24 points in a 76-57 win over Denison University and earned Marietta College Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot All-Tournament Team honors. She set career-highs with eight rebounds against the Tigers and six steals against Bethany.
Alexandra Leslie — University of Rochester — Lancaster, PA (Manheim Township)
Senior forward Alexandra Leslie scored 24 points, adding five rebounds and five assists, in a 76-53 University of Rochester win at William Smith College. She hit eight of 10 field goals and her 24-point effort moved her into third place in career scoring at Rochester with 1,478 points.
Men’s Basketball
Ryan Clamage — University of Rochester — Lake Forest, IL (Lake Forest Academy)
University of Rochester junior guard Ryan Clamage was named Most Valuable Player of the Holiday Inn Rochester Downtown Thanksgiving Tournament. He netted 20 points, connecting on four of eight 3-pointers, as the Yellowjackets captured the tournament title with a 64-56 win over Stockton University. Clamage tallied 25 points, hitting five of seven 3-pointers, in a midweek loss to Hobart College.
Jake Knupp — Washington University — St. Paul, MN (East Ridge)
Senior guard Jake Knupp averaged 21.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game as Washington University won two of three road games. He tallied a career-high 25 points with seven boards and four assists in a 71-57 victory at Principia College on Tuesday. Knupp finished the week with 21 points, four rebounds, and three assists in a loss to Mount St. Joseph University on Sunday.
