Athletes of the Week for November 28, 2016

Women’s Basketball

Hillary Hellman  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Lakeside Park, KY (Notre Dame Academy)

Sophomore guard/forward Hillary Hellman averaged 25.0 points per game and shot 43.5 percent from three-point range (10-for-23) in a 2-1 week for Case Western Reserve University. She scored a career-high 31 points, connecting on six of nine 3-pointers, and added six rebounds, three blocks, and two steals in the Spartans’ 95-87 win over John Carroll University. In a 74-73 overtime victory over Oberlin College on Saturday, Hellman hit four of eight 3-pointers and led all scorers with 23 points.

Men’s Basketball

Jack Serbin  — Carnegie Mellon University  —  New Albany, OH (New Albany)

Senior forward Jack Serbin was named Most Valuable Player of the Carnegie Mellon University DoubleTree Invitational and averaged a double-double in a 2-1 week for the Tartans. He scored 30 points, hitting 10 of 18 field goals and all eight of his free throw attempts, and grabbed 15 rebounds in a 76-62 Tartan win over Saint Vincent College in the tournament’s title game. For the week, Serbin averaged 19.0 points and 11.0 rebounds.

Blaine Crawford  —  University of Chicago  —  St. Paul, MN (The Blake School)

Senior forward Blaine Crawford was named Most Valuable Player of the University of Chicago Holiday Tournament and led the Maroons to a 3-0 week. He shot 78.3 percent from the field (18-of-23), averaging 17.7 points and 10.7 rebounds for the week. Crawford scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 94-83 win over Carroll University (WI) on Saturday and recorded another double-double the following day with 15 points and 13 boards in a 78-56 Maroon victory over DePauw University.

Women’s Fencing

Stephanie Cunningham  —  NYU  —  St. Louis, MO (Ladue Horton Watkins)

NYU junior Stephanie Cunningham won her only bout in the epee on Tuesday against two-time defending NCAA champion Columbia University.

Men’s Fencing

Quinten Burgunder  —  NYU  —  Chatham, NJ (Chatham)

NYU senior Quinten Burgunder won both his bouts in the sabre on Tuesday in the Violets’ narrow 14-13 loss to two-time defending NCAA champion Columbia University.

Wrestling

Matthew Coppola  —  NYU  —  Warren, NJ (Watchung Hills)

Senior Matthew Coppola won a pair of matches at 149 pounds to lead NYU to dual meet wins over Johns Hopkins University and Muhlenberg College on Sunday at Madison Square Garden. He defeated his opponent from the Blue Jays 7-3 before earning a major decision (18-5) victory against his opponent from Muhlenberg.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
