Athletes of the Week for December 5, 2016

Women’s Soccer — Offense

Katie Chandler  —  Washington University  —  Fall City, WA (Holy Names Academy)

Senior forward Katie Chandler was named the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship Most Outstanding Offensive Player after helping Washington University to the NCAA title. She scored a pair of goals in a 2-1 Bears’ win over 23rd-ranked Brandeis University in the semifinal round.

Women’s Soccer — Defense

Lizzy Crist  —  Washington University  —  Wayzata, MN (Minnetonka)

Senior goalkeeper Lizzy Crist was named the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship Most Outstanding Defensive Player after leading Washington University to the NCAA title. She posted a 2-0 record with a 0.90 goals against average in the NCAA Final Four and made a season-high six saves in a 5-4 victory in penalty kicks over sixth-ranked Messiah College in the national championship game.

Women’s Basketball

Alexandra Leslie  —  University of Rochester  —  Lancaster, PA (Manheim Township)

University of Rochester junior forward Alexandra Leslie was named the Most Valuable Player of the Mark’s Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout as the Yellowjackets defeated local rivals St. John Fisher College and Nazareth College. She shot 77.3 percent from the floor (17-for-22) and 81.3 percent from the free throw line (13-of-16) in the two games, while averaging 21.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game for the week.

Men’s Basketball

Noah Karras  —  University of Chicago  —  Lake Forest, IL (Lake Forest)

University of Chicago sophomore guard Noah Karras scored a career-high 27 points in the Maroons’
83-69 win over Kalamazoo College on Saturday. He contributed 10 points in a 94-92 victory over Wheaton College (IL) on Wednesday. For the week, Karras shot 59.1 percent from the field (13-for-22) and 50.0 percent from three-point range (7-of-14).

Mack Montague  —  University of Rochester  —  Westport, CT (Suffield Academy)

University of Rochester senior guard Mack Montague was named the Most Valuable Player of the Mark’s Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout as the Yellowjackets defeated local rivals St. John Fisher College and Nazareth College. He scored 19 points in each game, shooting 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from three-point range and 87.5 percent from the free throw line (7-for-8) in the two contests.

Women’s Fencing

Joanne Carminucci  —  Brandeis University  —  Brewster, NY (North Salem)

Sophomore Joanne Carminucci finished 11-3 in the foil at the 2016 Brandeis University Invitational, the best mark by any Judges’ fencer. She posted a 3-0 mark against Brown University and St. John’s University, 2-0 versus University of North Carolina, and 2-1 against Yale University. Brandeis defeated Brown 15-12 for its only victory of the day.

Men’s Fencing

Quinten Burgunder  —  NYU  —  Chatham, NJ (Chatham)

Senior Quinten Burgunder helped lead NYU to a 4-2 record at the Sacred Heart University Tradition Tournament on Sunday, posting a 12-3 record in the sabre. The Violets recorded wins over Sacred Heart, Vassar College, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Harvard University.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Cindy Cheng  —  Emory University  —  Orlando, FL (Dr. Phillips)

Emory University junior Cindy Cheng automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in one event and surpassed six “B” cut times at the Miami University (OH) Invitational. She set the program record and met the NCAA “A” standard with a time of 1:57.26 in the 200-yard backstroke. Cheng added provisional qualifying marks in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.13), 500-yard freestyle (4:51.85) and as part of four relays. She currently ranks first in NCAA Division III in the three individual events and as part of two relays.

Machika Kaku  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Irvine, CA (University)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Machika Kaku broke a 10-year-old program record on the three-meter board and swept both diving events at the Kenyon College Total Performance Sports Camp Invitational. She earned 492.70 points after 11 dives to break the three-meter record by 19.15 points. Kaku, who qualified for the NCAA Division III Regional Diving Championships for the fourth consecutive year, won the one-meter event with a score of 448.65.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Andrew Wilson  —  Emory University  —  Bethesda, MD (Phillips Academy, MA)

Emory University senior Andrew Wilson set three individual NCAA Division III records and swam on two relays that also broke Division III marks at the Miami University (OH) Invitational. He posted winning times and Division III records in the 200-yard individual medley (1:45.57), 100-yard breaststroke (51.14 seconds), and 200-yard breaststroke (1:51.15). Wilson swam the breaststroke leg in the 200- and 400-yard medley relays that posted Division III record times of 1:26.74 and 3:13.00, respectively.

Gabe Bamforth —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Cambridge, MA (Cambridge Rindge and Latin)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Gabe Bamforth broke his own program records and one pool record in sweeping the diving events at the Kenyon College Total Performance Sports Camp Invitational. He broke the pool record in the one-meter event with an 11-dive score of 531.35 points on Saturday after capturing the three-meter board with a mark of 547.50 the previous day. Bamforth qualified for the NCAA Division III Regional Diving Championships earlier this season.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Annalise Wagner  —  Washington University  —  Webster Groves, MO (John Burroughs)

Junior Annalise Wagner led off the winning Washington University 1,600-meter relay that ranks first in NCAA Division III after the opening weekend of the season and easily captured the 600-meter run at the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan First Chance meet.  The relay finished in a time of 3:56.68, while Wagner captured the 600 race more than 20 seconds ahead of the runner-up with a time of 1:37.03.

Amy Hunter  —  Emory University  —  Harvard, MA (The Bromfield School)

Amy Hunter recorded the second-best triple jump mark in Emory University history in her first collegiate competition at the Birmingham-Southern College Panther Ice Breaker. She finished fifth among NCAA Division II and Division III competitors with a mark of 11.26 meters, which ranks fifth in NCAA Division III after the first weekend of the season.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Ethan Brodeur —  Washington University  —  Naperville, IL (Naperville Central)

Senior Ethan Brodeur of Washington University ran the second-fastest 3,000-meter run in NCAA Division III over the weekend, capturing the event at the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan First Chance meet. He posted a time of 8:46.81, finishing more than 38 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Everett Kleven —  Washington University  —  Mill Creek, WA (Henry M. Jackson)

Senior Everett Kleven of Washington University finished first in the pole vault at the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan First Chance meet. He cleared a height of 4.67 meters, more than half a meter ahead of his runner-up teammate and the seventh-best mark in NCAA Division III in the opening weekend of the season.

Wrestling

Nick Ferraro  —  University of Chicago  —  Elburn, IL (Marmion Academy)

University of Chicago junior Nick Ferraro earned the 174-pound title at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational. He recorded first period pins in his opening match and in the final with a pair of major decision victories (12-1 and 10-0) in between. The Maroons placed fourth in the 12-team event.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
