Athletes of the Week for December 9, 2019

Women’s Basketball

Janean Cuffee  —  NYU  —  New York, NY (The Lawrenceville School)

NYU junior Janean Cuffee netted 28 of her season-high 37 points in the second half to lead the Violets to an 83-72 win over 20th-ranked St. John Fisher College. She shot 50.0 percent from the floor (12-for-24), hitting eight of 13 shots in the second half. Cuffee made all 11 of her free throw attempts, including six in the final 39 seconds, and added a season-high seven assists.

Men’s Basketball

Chandler Jones  — Brandeis University  —  Springfield, MA (Springfield Commonwealth Academy)

Brandeis University junior forward Chandler Jones averaged 24.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game in a 2-1 week for the Judges. He scored 22 points and grabbed seven boards in an 84-81 overtime win at Lasell College. Jones tied his career-high with 25 points in a loss to Tufts University and followed that with career-bests of 26 points and seven assists in a win over Salem State University in the New England Big Four Challenge. He shot 59.2 percent from the field (29-of-49) and 46.7 percent from three-point range (7-for-15) in the three contests.

Matthew Schner  — Emory University  —  Boca Raton, FL (Grandview Prep)

Emory University junior forward Matthew Schner averaged 22.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as the second-ranked Eagles remained undefeated with two wins. He tied his career-high with 30 points, connecting on 12 of 21 field goals, and pulled down 12 rebounds in a 98-89 win at LaGrange College. Schner contributed 14 points, three rebounds, and three assists in the Eagles’ 96-71 victory over Piedmont College. For the two games, Schner shot 53.3 percent from the field (16-for-30) and 50.0 percent from three-point range (6-of-12).

Women’s Fencing

Ana Lanzman  —  NYU  —  Brooklyn, NY (Stuyvesant)

NYU first-year fencer Ana Lanzman posted an 11-6 record in the epee as the Violets split six matches at the Sacred Heart University Tradition Tournament. NYU earned wins over Vassar College, Sacred Heart, and Brown University. 

Men’s Fencing

Brian Kim  — NYU  —  Upper Saddle River, NJ (Dwight-Englewood)

NYU freshman Brian Kim finished 14-1 in the sabre as the Violets won five of six bouts at the Sacred Heart University Tradition Tournament, including a dramatic win over 2019 NCAA Fencing Championship runner-up Penn State University. The Violets also posted victories over New Jersey Institute of Technology, Vassar College, Sacred Heart, and Brown University.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Caroline Maki  —  Emory University  —  Chester Springs, PA (Downington Stem Academy)

First-year swimmer Caroline Maki provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in two individual events and four relays as Emory University placed third at the Denison University Invitational. She won the 100-yard freestyle (50.47 seconds) and placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (23.63 seconds). Maki swam on the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.13), 400-yard freestyle relay (3:23.17), 400-yard medley relay (3:47.63), and 200-yard medley relay (1:44.85), all of which met NCAA B standards.

Sydney Catron  —  NYU  —  Alexandria, VA (Bishop O’Connell)

Junior Sydney Catron provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in three individual events and four relays as the Violets won the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. She won the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.78) and 200-yard backstroke (2:00.34), and placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.13 seconds). Catron swam on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay (3:28.01), the 200- (1:44.54) and 400-yard medley relays (3:48.76), and the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:34.11), all of which met NCAA B standards.

Ashlyn Winship  —  NYU  —  Richardson, TX (Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science)

Junior Ashley Winship posted her career-best score in the three-meter diving event at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. Her score of 435.45 points eclipsed the NCAA regional diving qualifying score. Winship posted a score of 391.55 points on the one-meter board.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Pat Pema  —  Emory University  —  Columbus, OH (St. Charles)

Emory University sophomore Pat Pema provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in three individual events and four relays as Emory University placed second at the Denison University Invitational. He won the 500-yard freestyle (4:23.78) and placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.03; 1:37.78 in preliminaries) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:47.83; 1:47.34 in prelims) in NCAA B cut times. Pema swam on the 800- (6:34.85) and 400-yard freestyle relays (2:57.97), and the 400- (3:18.69) and 200-yard medley relays (1:30.20), all of which met the NCAA B standard.

Lucas Bumgarner  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)

Emory University sophomore Lucas Bumgarner of Emory University swept the diving events at the Denison University Invitational. He won the three-meter, six-dive finals with 334.75 points (360.45 in preliminaries) and turned in a score of 324.50 points to capture the one-meter, six-dive event. Bumgarner again met the NCAA regional diving qualifying marks in both dives, setting a season-high on the three-meter board.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Sophie Grigaux  —  Washington University  —  Ladera Ranch, CA (San Juan Hills)

Washington University junior Sophie Grigaux won one individual event and ran on a winning relay at the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan First Chance Meet. She won the 600-meter run (1:40.33) and teamed with Rachel Novick, Ava Forman, and Elle Hansen to win the 1,600-meter relay in 4:02.45, the second-fastest NCAA Division III time of the weekend.

Zi’Onay Walker  —  Washington University  —  Flossmoor, IL (Homewood-Flossmoor Community)

Washington University sophomore Zi’Onay Walker won the triple jump at the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan First Chance Meet. Her distance of 11.68 meters is the top mark in NCAA Division III for the opening weekend.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Christian Bean  —  Washington University  —  Elk Grove, CA (Laguna Creek)

Washington University freshman Christian Bean began his collegiate career by breaking the program record in the 60-meter dash at the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan First Chance Meet. His time of 6.99 seconds narrowly bettered the mark of 7.00 set by Zae Alcedo in 2018.

Dominic Oddo  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Mentor, OH (Mentor)

Case Western Reserve University senior Dominic Oddo earned four top-three finishes at the Spartan Holiday Classic. He won the long jump with a mark of 6.76 meters, placed second in the high jump (1.85 meters) and the 60-meter hurdles (8.79 seconds), and finished third in the 400-meter run (52.63 seconds).

Wheeler Wilson  —  Emory University  —  Winter Park, FL (Trinity Prep)

Emory University freshman Wheeler Wilson broke the program record in the shot put in his first collegiate meet at the Birmingham-Southern College Icebreaker. His toss of 15.04 meters shattered the previous mark of 14.77 meters, which was established in 2012.

Wrestling

Ben Sarasin  — University of Chicago  —  Cedar Rapids, IA (J.F. Kennedy)

University of Chicago sophomore Ben Sarasin won the 184-pound title at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational on Saturday. He ran his season-opening undefeated streak to 13 matches with four wins. Sarasin won two matches by technical fall and one by pin before edging his Central College opponent, 7-5 in the final.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
