Athletes of the Week for January 30, 2017

Women’s Basketball

Kara Hageman  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Pennington, NJ (Hopewell Valley Central)

Case Western Reserve University junior forward Kara Hageman averaged 34.5 points per game, recording back-to-back career-highs and scoring a program single-game record 41 points against 11th-ranked Washington University on Sunday. She shot 69.4 percent from the floor (25-for-36) and 70.0 percent from three-point range (7-of-10), while adding 5.5 rebounds per game. On Friday, Hageman matched her career-high with 28 points, hitting four of six 3-pointers, in an 80-78 victory over UAA co-leader University of Chicago. She made a UAA-record 16 of 21 field goals, hitting three of four 3-pointers, to set the school record in a 92-79 loss to the Bears, becoming just the second woman in UAA history to score 40 points in a game.

Men’s Basketball

Adam Gigax  —  Emory University  —  Mason, OH (Moeller)

Junior guard Adam Gigax averaged 27.5 points and 8.0 rebounds as Emory University ran its winning streak to five games with home UAA wins over Brandeis University and NYU. He hit five 3-pointers in each contest, scoring 28 points in a 94-85 win over the Judges, and posted his first career double-double with 27 points and 10 boards in an 84-75 victory over the Violets. For the weekend, Gigax shot 51.3 percent from the field (20-of-39), including 47.6 percent from three-point range (10-for-21).

Andrew Sanders  —  Washington University  —  Tampa, FL (HB Plant)

Junior forward Andrew Sanders averaged 26.0 points and 6.5 rebounds as Washington University finished the first half of the UAA schedule undefeated with road wins over Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University. He scored 22 points, hitting five of nine field goals, and 12 of 17 free throws in a 70-47 victory over the Tartans, and netted a career-high 30 points with nine rebounds in an 88-77 win over the Spartans. For the weekend, Sanders shot 61.5 percent from the floor (16-for-26) and 76.9 percent from the free throw line (20-for-26).

Women’s Fencing

Jessica Gets  —  Brandeis University  —  Morganville, NJ (Marlborough)

Brandeis University first-year fencer Jessica Gets posted a team-best 13-1 foil record at the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season at Brown University. The foil squad never allowed more than three losses in any of five matches, four of which were team victories. The Judges improved to 9-3 in the NFC.

Men’s Fencing

Eli Litle  —  Brandeis University  —  Haifa, Israel (Reali-Beit Beram)

Brandeis University senior Eli Litle posted a 10-2 record for the men’s foil squad as the Judges finished 5-0 at the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season at Brown University. He recorded a  3-0 mark in a win over Boston College in a battle of unbeaten conference foes. The Judges clinched the outright NFC men’s title.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Fiona Muir  —   Emory University  —  Great Falls, VA (Langley)

Sophomore Fiona Muir provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in two individual events and as part of one relay in an Emory University loss to defending NCAA Division I champion University of Georgia. She placed second in the 100-yard freestyle (51.43 seconds) and third in the 50-yard freestyle (23.73 seconds), meeting the NCAA provisional mark in each. Muir teamed with Meg Taylor, Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe, and Marissa Bergh to surpass the “B” cut time with a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.18).

Emily Ramos  —  Washington University  —  Parkland, FL (Marjory Stoneman Douglas)

Senior Emily Ramos of Washington University set a career-best 11-dive score of 424.50 in winning the three-meter dive at the Principia College Diving Invitational. She placed second on the one-meter board with 397.25 points for 11 dives. Ramos finished the weekend with a first-place finish in the one-meter dive (252.75) in the Bears’ Senior Day win over Western Illinois University.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Andrew Wilson  —  Emory University  —  Bethesda, MD (Phillips Academy, MA)

Senior Andrew Wilson provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in two individual events and posted the only Emory University individual event victory against NCAA Division I University of Georgia. He claimed the 100-yard breaststroke with a provisional-qualifying time of 54.41 seconds and earned a runner-up finish in the 200-yard breaststroke in an NCAA “B” cut time of 2:00.64.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Emily Bryson  —  Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Brandeis University sophomore Emily Bryson broke the program record and ran the fastest time in NCAA Division III this season in the mile run at the Boston University Terrier Classic. Her time of 4:52.18 surpassed the previous school mark (set in 2011) by more than 1.5 seconds. After conversion, Bryson’s time leads the nation by 1.5 seconds and the UAA by five seconds.

Heidi Nassos  —  Washington University  —  Wheaton, IL (Wheaton Warrenville South)

Washington University sophomore Heidi Nassos placed second in the pole vault at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Engineer Invitational. Her height of 3.65 meters ranks 10th in NCAA Division III this season and helped the Bears take the team title in the nine-team meet.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Deko Ricketts  —  Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Barstow School)

Washington University senior Deko Ricketts ran the sixth-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season in the 800-meter run at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Engineer Invitational. He finished first in the event in a time of 1:54.75 and ran on the runner-up 1,600-meter (3:27.58) as the Bears placed second in the nine-team meet.

Ezugo Onejeme  —  Washington University  —  Randallstown, MD (Calvert Hall College)

Washington University junior Ezugo Onejeme won the triple jump at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Engineer Invitational. He improved on his season-best distance of a week ago with a leap of 13.49 meters as the Bears placed second in the nine-team meet.

Wrestling

Nick Matthews  —  NYU  —  Long Valley, NJ (West Morris Central)

NYU senior Nick Matthews captured the 149-pound title at the USC Wildcat Open hosted by Johnson & Wales University on Sunday. He finished 4-0, winning by fall in the opening round and by decision in the next three bouts, including a 4-3 semifinal victory and then a 1-0 victory in the championship match over teammate Evan Drill.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
