Athletes of the Week for February 6, 2017

Women’s Basketball

Maria Jackson  —  Brandeis University  —  Rochester, NY (Hilton)

Senior forward/center Maria Jackson averaged 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.5 steals, 2.5 blocks, and 1.5 assists as Brandeis University split home games against Emory University and University of Rochester. She scored a game- and career-high 22 points, grabbed eight boards, and scored the game-winner off an offensive rebound at the buzzer in a 61-59 victory over the Eagles. Jackson recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds with a career-best six steals and three blocked shots in a 77-65 loss to the Yellowjackets.

Britta Nordstrom  —  University of Chicago  —  Scottsdale, AZ (Pinnacle)

Senior forward Britta Nordstrom missed only one field goal and averaged 19.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals, and 2.0 assists per game to lead University of Chicago to home wins over Case Western Reserve University and 20th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University. She scored 23 points and eclipsed 1,000 career points, adding nine rebounds and four steals, in an 87-74 victory over the Spartans on Friday. In just 21 minutes on Sunday, Nordstrom netted 16 points and seven boards in a 49-point win over the Tartans. She shot 93.8 percent from the floor (15-for-16) and 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the free throw line.

Madeline Homoly  —  Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Bishop Miege)

Sophomore forward Madeline Homoly averaged 20.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game to lead Washington University to home wins over 20th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University. She totaled 17 points and seven rebounds in a 79-69 Bears’ victory over the Tartans on Friday, and followed with 24 points and five boards in a 95-66 win over the Spartans. For the weekend, Homoly shot 78.3 percent from the floor (18-for-23) and 83.3 percent (5-for-6) from the line.

Men’s Basketball

Jack Serbin  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  New Albany, OH (New Albany)

Carnegie Mellon University senior forward Jack Serbin averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds as the Tartans split UAA road contests against Washington University and University of Chicago. He finished with 18 points and eight rebounds in a 93-80 loss to the Bears on Friday before totaling 26 points, 16 boards, four assists, and four blocks in the Tartans’ 85-83 overtime victory over the Maroons, hitting the game-tying three-pointer with 13 seconds left in regulation. Serbin hit four of eight 3-pointers against Chicago and hit all 10 of his free throw attempts in the two games.

Andrew Sanders  —  Washington University  —  Tampa, FL (HB Plant)

Washington University junior forward Andrew Sanders averaged 20.5 points and 9.0 rebounds as the Bears remained unbeaten in UAA play with home victories over Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University. He posted a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds in the Bears’  93-80 win over the Tartans on Friday before contributing 15 points and eight boards in a 102-97 win over the Spartans on Sunday. He shot 54.2 percent from the floor (13-for-24) in the two games.

Women’s Fencing

Liz Feller  —  Brandeis University  —  Cortlandt Manor, NY (Hendrick Hudson)

Junior Liz Feller led Brandeis University to a 4-2 record overall and in the epee at the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She finished 15-3 overall with 3-0 marks against Stevens Institute of Technology, Yeshiva University, Haverford College, and New Jersey Institute of Technology with a 2-1 record against UAA rival NYU.

Jacqueline Tubbs  —  NYU  —  Elk Grove Village, IL (Elk Grove)

NYU sophomore Jacqueline Tubbs finished 13-2 in the sabre on Sunday at the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She helped lead the Violets to three wins, including an 18-9 victory over UAA rival Brandeis University.

Men’s Fencing

Grant Williams  —  NYU  —  Atlanta, GA (The Galloway School)

Sophomore Grant Williams posted an 11-1 mark in the sabre on Sunday at the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He helped lead the Violets to a 5-1 record at the event, including an 19-8 victory over UAA rival Brandeis University.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Kate Hollenbeck  —  NYU  —  Omaha, NE (Harry A. Burke)

NYU sophomore Kate Hollenbeck finished second in the 100-yard butterfly to an NCAA Division I competitor at the NYU Invitational on Saturday. She recorded a time of 58.30 seconds to fall just .03 seconds short of the winner from Lehigh University.

Carmen White  —  NYU  —  Lake Bluff, IL (Lake Forest)

NYU first-year diver Carmen White broke the program record in both diving events at the NYU Invitational over the weekend. Her one-meter (530.95) and three-meter (533.35) record-setting marks are currently the top scores in NCAA Division III.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Tim Kwarcinski  —  NYU  —  Westfield, MA (Westfield)

NYU junior Tim Kwarcinski provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in the 400-yard individual medley at the NYU Invitational. His time of 4:02.69 ranks fifth in the UAA and 19th in NCAA Division III this season.

Connor Brisson  —  NYU  —  Greenwich, CT (Greenwich)

NYU sophomore Connor Brisson broke the program record in both diving events at the NYU Invitational over the weekend. His one-meter (612.80) and three-meter (615.40) record-setting marks are currently the top scores in NCAA Division III.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Daisy Ogede  —  Washington University  —  Richton Park, IL (Western Reserve Academy)

Senior Daisy Ogede won two individual events and ran on a winning relay as Washington University earned the title at the Illinois Wesleyan University Keck Invitational on Saturday. Her times of 7.78 seconds in the 60-meter dash and 25.46 seconds in the 200-meter dash each rank fifth in NCAA Division III this season. Ogede joined Nicky Althoff, Kelli Hancock, and Ashley Knudson to post the nation’s third-fastest time in the 1,600-meter relay in 3:55.19.

Grace Yee  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  San Francisco, CA (Lick-Wilmerding)

Senior Grace Yee set the Carnegie Mellon University record in the pole vault and helped lead the Tartans to the title at the nine-team Denison University Bob Shannon Invitational. She and teammate Michelle Karabin both set the mark, clearing the bar at 3.56 meters, with Yee being awarded the judges’ decision for hitting the mark on her second attempt. The height ranks third in the UAA and 17th in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Budd Brown  —  NYU  —  Baldwin, NY (Baldwin Senior)

Senior Budd Brown of NYU won a pair of events at the Dartmouth College Indoor Classic on Saturday. He won the 200-meter dash in 22.37 seconds, which is the top time in the UAA and 12th in NCAA Division III this season. Brown also captured the 400-meter run in 50.39 seconds.

Everett Kleven  —  Washington University  —  Mill Creek, WA (Henry M. Jackson)

Senior Everett Kleven placed second in the pole vault and helped lead Washington University to the title at the Illinois Wesleyan University Keck Invitational. His height of 4.80 meters ranks 12th in NCAA Division III this season.

Wrestling

Sean Lyons  —  NYU  —  Sewall, NJ (St. Joseph’s Prep, PA)

Freshman Sean Lyons won each of his matches to lead 14th-ranked NYU to three dominating dual match wins on Saturday. The freshman finished 3-0 at 141 pounds, recording two victories by fall and one by major decision, in NYU wins over Bridgewater State University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and 16th-ranked United States Coast Guard Academy.

Women’s Tennis

Nicholle Torres  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Weston, FL (Great Neck South)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Nicholle Torres recorded a combined 4-0 mark in singles and doubles as the Tartans defeated NCAA Division I Saint Joseph’s University and Division II Slippery Rock University. She posted two wins at first singles, defeating her Saint Joseph’s opponent in straight sets and winning a third-set tiebreaker, 10-3, against her Slippery Rock opponent. Torres and junior Cori Sidell won two matches at first doubles, including a 9-8 (7-5) win over a regionally ranked pair from Slippery Rock.

Men’s Tennis

Charlie Pei  —  University of Chicago  —  San Diego, CA (Torrey Pines)

University of Chicago sophomore Charlie Pei picked up wins in singles and doubles in a 7-2 Maroons’ win over NCAA Division II Lewis University on Saturday. He won 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) at second singles and teamed with junior Peter Leung for an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles as the Maroons improved to 5-0.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
