Athletes of the Week for February 13, 2017

Women’s Basketball

Kara Hageman  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Pennington, NJ (Hopewell Valley Central)

Case Western Reserve University junior forward Kara Hageman averaged 21.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game in UAA wins over NYU and Brandeis University. She tallied 22 points, four rebounds, two blocks, and two steals in the Spartans’ 64-60 win over the Violets on Friday and then totaled 20 points, six boards, and three assists in a 71-68 victory over the Judges on Sunday. For the week, Hageman shot 48.4 percent from the floor (15-of-31) and 36.4 percent from three-point range (4-for-11).

Madeline Homoly  —  Washington University  —  Scottsdale, AZ (Pinnacle)

Washington University sophomore forward Madeline Homoly averaged 20.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 1.0 steals per game in UAA wins over Emory University and University of Rochester. She hit 10 of 14 field goals to score 24 points, adding seven rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and two steals in the Bears’ 82-78 victory over the Eagles on Friday. Homoly finished with 17 points, three rebounds, and three assists as the Bears held off the Yellowjackets, 80-77, on Sunday. She finished the weekend shooting 64.3 percent from the floor (18-for-28).

Men’s Basketball

Chris Shkil  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Mentor, OH (Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin)

Senior center Chris Shkil averaged 18.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game as Carnegie Mellon University swept home contests against Brandeis University and NYU. He netted a season-high 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor, grabbed 12 rebounds, and blocked three shots in the Tartans’ 78-64 win over the Judges on Friday. Shkil totaled 16 points, eight boards, and four blocks in a 94-58 victory over the Violets on Sunday. He shot 73.7 percent from the field in the two games (14-for-19).

Women’s Fencing

Joanne Carminucci  —  Brandeis University  —  Brewster, NY (North Salem)

Brandeis University sophomore Joanne Carminucci finished 12-0 in the foil to lead the Judges to a 4-2 record at the Fairleigh Dickinson University Invitational. She won all three of her bouts against FDU, Johns Hopkins University, and seventh-ranked Temple University, while posting a 2-0 mark against Hunter College and 1-0 against Drew University. Carminucci helped the foil squad go unbeaten, including a 6-3 victory over Temple. 

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Cindy Cheng  —  Emory University  —  Orlando, FL (Dr. Phillips)

Junior Cindy Cheng was named Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive year in leading Emory University to its 19th consecutive UAA Swimming and Diving Championship hosted by University of Chicago. She captured the 500-yard freestyle and set UAA records in capturing the 100-yard backstroke (55.07 seconds) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.46). Cheng swam on four winning relays, each of which broke Association records.

Agnes Lo  —  University of Chicago  —  Fremont, CA (Mission San Jose)

University of Chicago first-year diver Agnes Lo was named Diver of the Year at the 2017 UAA Swimming and Diving Championship hosted by the Maroons. She won the one-meter dive with an Association record-breaking score of 499.55. Lo opened her first UAA championship by finishing first on the three-meter board with a score of 510.55, bettering the runner-up by 43 points.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Andrew Wilson  —  Emory University  —  Bethesda, MD (Phillips Academy, MA)

Senior Andrew Wilson was named Swimmer of the Year for the second time in leading Emory University to its 19th consecutive UAA Swimming and Diving Championship hosted by University of Chicago. He won three individual events in UAA record-setting fashion, taking the 200-yard individual medley (1:46.69), 100-yard breaststroke (52.70 seconds), and the 200-yard breaststroke (1:54.11). Wilson added UAA relay titles that broke Association marks in the 200- and 400-yard medley relays.

Connor Brisson  —  NYU  —  Greenwich, CT (Greenwich)

NYU sophomore Connor Brisson was named Diver of the Year at the 2017 UAA Swimming and Diving Championship hosted by University of Chicago. He won the three-meter dive with a score of 570.65 after breaking the Association record in the preliminaries with a mark of 620.90. Brisson opened the championship by taking the title with a UAA record score of 586.55 on the one-meter board.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Emily Bryson  —  Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Brandeis University sophomore Emily Bryson ran the fourth-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season and fastest in the UAA in the 3,000-meter run at the David Henry Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University. Her time of 9:43.15 was a personal best and placed her second among Division III runners and 22nd of 88 competitors, including primarily Division I and non-collegiate runners.

Rebecca Ridderhoff  —  Washington University  —  Woodridge, IL (Downers Grove North)

Washington University senior Rebecca Ridderhoff posted a career-best time to win the 400-meter dash at the Hoosier Hills Invitational hosted by Indiana University. She shaved more than five seconds off her previous best time finishing in 56.13 seconds, which converts to the third-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season. Ridderhoff also helped the Bears to a runner-up finish in the 1,600-meter relay in 3:49.05.

Heidi Nassos  —  Washington University  —  Wheaton, IL (Wheaton Warrenville South)

Washington University sophomore Heidi Nassos finished first in the pole vault and second in the triple jump at the Indianapolis Team Invitational. Her mark of 3.55 meters in the pole vault and her leap of 11.07 meters in the triple jump narrowly missed personal best performances.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Deko Ricketts  —  Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Barstow School)

Washington University senior Deko Ricketts won the 800-meter dash at the Hoosier Hills Invitational hosted by Indiana University. His time of 1:52.83 converts to the ninth-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season.

Everett Kleven  —  Washington University  —  Mill Creek, WA (Henry M. Jackson)

Washington University senior Everett Kleven topped the competition in the pole vault at the Indianapolis Team Invitational. His height of 4.86 meters ranks 11th in NCAA Division III.

Wrestling

Raymond Jazikoff  —  NYU  —  South Plainfield, NJ (South Plainfield)

Junior Raymond Jazikoff was named Most Outstanding Wrestler as host NYU captured the 2017 UAA Wrestling Championship for an Association record sixth consecutive year. He recorded an 8-0 major decision win over Andrew Munn of Case Western Reserve University and then decisioned Steve Bonsall of University of Chicago, 8-5, in the title match.

Softball

Jessy McLean  —  Emory University  —  Matlacha, FL (Bishop Verot)

Emory University first-year fielder Jessy McLean batted .455 (5-for-11) as the Eagles won three of four games at their season-opening 3n2 Elite Invite. She paced the team with three doubles and five runs batted in, finishing the weekend with a pair of two-run doubles in the Eagles’ 7-0 victory over Averett University.

Brittany File  —  Emory University  —  Carmel, CA (Carmel)

Emory University senior pitcher Brittany File won two games and saved another, while also throwing her third career seven-inning no-hitter, at the Eagles’ season-opening 3n2 Elite Invite. She totaled 16 innings with an earned run average of 0.88 and 25 strikeouts with just five walks. File fanned 14 in her no-hitter, a 7-0 win over Averett University on Sunday. Earlier in the day, she hurled the final two innings striking out two to preserve a 2-0 Eagle triumph over Rhodes College.

Baseball

Wilson Morgan  —  Emory University  —  Atlanta, GA (Woodward Academy)

Senior outfielder Wilson Morgan batted .385 (5-for-13) with three runs batted in as Emory University swept a three-game weekend series against Sewanee: The University of the South. He drove in a run in each contest, including a walk-off double in the season opener to lift the Eagles to a 6-5 victory.

Billy Dimlow  —  Emory University  —  Sammamish, WA (Eastside Catholic)

Sophomore pitcher Billy Dimlow tossed seven shutout innings to lead Emory University to a 3-0 victory over Sewanee: The University of the South in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday. He retired the first 11 Tiger batters he faced and finished the game allowing two hits without a walk and striking out a career-high 12 batters.

Women’s Tennis

Grace Deering  —  Washington University  —  Charlotte, NC (Charlotte Catholic)

Junior Grace Deering began her spring season with a three-set win at second singles in the Bears’ 6-3 loss to NCAA Division II 20th-ranked Drury University. After dropping the first set 6-2, she came back to take the second set 7-6 (8-6) and won a third-set super breaker, 10-7.

Men’s Tennis

Chaz Downing  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Newport Beach, CA (Corona Del Mar)

Sophomore Chaz Downing posted a pair of straight-set singles wins over NCAA Division I & II opponents and added a doubles victory for Carnegie Mellon University. He posted a 6-0, 6-4 win at second singles in the Tartans’ 8-1 win over Walsh University and earned one of the team’s points in a 5-2 loss to Saint Francis University, winning 6-3, 6-2. Downing teamed with Nicholas Calzolano for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

Radha Vishnubhotla  —  Washington University  —  Carmel, IN (Carmel)

Sophomore Radha Vishnubhotla posted a pair of victories to lead Washington University to a 5-4 win over NCAA Division II 38th-ranked Drury University on Saturday. He recorded a straight-set win (6-4, 6-3) at fourth singles and teamed with senior Jeremy Bush for a key 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
