Athletes of the Week for March 20, 2017

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Cindy Cheng  —  Emory University  —  Orlando, FL (Dr. Phillips)

Junior Cindy Cheng won a pair of individual national championships, setting school records in both, and swam on three winning relays to help Emory University capture its eighth consecutive title at the 2017 NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. She finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (54.41 seconds) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.82), and third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.62). Cheng swam on the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.83), 400-yard medley relay (3:39.57), and 800-yard freestyle relay (7:14.98). The Eagles’ times in the 400 medley and 800 freestyle relays broke NCAA Division III records.

Agnes Lo  —  University of Chicago  —  Fremont, CA (Mission San Jose)

First-year diver Agnes Lo of University of Chicago earned All-America honors on both boards at the 2017 NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. She placed fifth on the one-meter board (428.45 points) and seventh in the three-meter dive (440.00).

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Andrew Wilson  —  Emory University  —  Bethesda, MD (Phillips Academy, MA)

Senior Andrew Wilson was named the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Swimmer of the Year after helping Emory University to its first title at the 2017 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. He set NCAA Division III records in all three individual events he won and swam on two winning relays, which also set NCAA Division III marks. Wilson won the 200-yard individual medley (1:44.18), 100-yard breaststroke (50.94 seconds), and the 200-yard breaststroke (1:50.80). He swam the breaststroke leg of the 200-yard medley relay that won in 1:26.14 and the 400-yard medley that finished in 3:10.51. Wilson became just the fifth person in the world to record a time under 51 seconds in the 100 breaststroke (short course yards) and his time in the 200 breaststroke is tied for the sixth-fastest time in the world.

Connor Brisson  —  NYU  —  Greenwich, CT (Greenwich)

Sophomore diver Connor Brisson of NYU earned All-America honors on both boards at the 2017 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. He finished as the runner-up on the three-meter board (577.50 points) and placed third in the one-meter event (502.60)

Baseball

Adrian Spitz  —  NYU  —  Los Angeles, CA (Beverly Hills)

NYU senior outfielder Adrian Spitz batted .516 (16-for-31) with two home runs and 16 runs batted in as the Violets split six games. He finished with five multi-hit games, added two doubles, a triple, four runs scored, and three stolen bases. Spitz drove in four runs in a doubleheader split with University of Dubuque, four in the Violets’ 12-7 win over Edgewood College, and seven in the opening game of a doubleheader split against Vassar College.

Jackson Weeg  —  Emory University  —  Woodstock, GA (River Ridge)

Emory University senior Jackson Weeg spun seven shutout innings to lead the Eagles to a 4-1 win over fourth-ranked Birmingham-Southern College on Wednesday. He allowed just three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts, allowing only three runners to reach scoring position.

Zack Kotin  —  Washington University  —  New York, NY (Dalton School)

Washington University sophomore Zack Kotin tossed seven hitless innings to earn his first victory of the season in the Bears’ 5-0 victory over Centenary University. During one stretch, he retired 12 consecutive batters before a batter reached base on an error. Kotin did not walk a hitter and struck out five.

Women’s Golf

Samantha Haubenstock  —  Washington University  —  Weston, FL (Pine Crest School)

Washington University first-year golfer Samantha Haubenstock finished the Jekyll Island Women’s Collegiate Golf Invitational tied with two other golfers for the best score (230) of the three-round tournament. She was one of only four golfers to post all three rounds under 80, recorded the first eagle of the invitational, and tied for the second most birdies with six. The Bears finished tied for fourth in the 23-team field that included 10 ranked programs.

Men’s Golf

Stefano Butti  —  Emory University  —  Palm City, FL (Jensen Beach)

Sophomore Stefano Butti tied for fifth place in the 150-golfer field at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational with a 54-hole score of 215. He fired back-to-back rounds of one-under-par 71 in the opening two rounds and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. The Eagles finished fifth in the 29-team field.

Softball

Jessie Michael  —  Emory University  —  Bishop, GA (Oconee County)

Freshman Jessie Michael batted .700 (7-for-10) with a 1.300 slugging percentage as Emory University won three of four games over the weekend. She totaled five runs batted in, three runs scored, three doubles, and a home run. Michael finished 4-for-5 with four RBI in the Eagles’ sweep of Centre College on Sunday.

Maggie O’Hara  —  University of Chicago  —  Barrington, IL (Barrington)

Senior Maggie O’Hara batted .583 (7-for-12) with a slugging percentage of 1.167 as University of Chicago began the season with three wins in four games. She drove in nine runs with at least one run batted in and one hit in each contest. O’Hara added two runs scored, four doubles, and a home run. She finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI in a 12-4 Maroons’ win over St. Olaf College.

Annie Wennerberg  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Avon Lake, OH (Avon Lake)

Senior Annie Wennerberg finished 3-0 without allowing an earned run in 22.2 innings of work as Case Western Reserve University finished 4-2 on their spring break trip to Florida. She allowed just two unearned runs, walked four, and struck out eight. Wennerberg threw a seven-inning shutout in a 4-0 Spartans’ win over The College of New Jersey, and an eight-inning blanking of Transylvania University in a 3-0 CWRU victory.

Women’s Tennis

Katie Lai  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Hagatna, Guam (St. Andrew’s Episcopal School)

Junior Katie Cahill finished a combined 3-1 in singles and doubles as Carnegie Mellon faced two top-10 opponents. She clinched the Tartans’ first win in program history over seventh-ranked Amherst College with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win at sixth singles. Lai also teamed with Jamie Vizelman at No. 3 doubles for 8-5 wins against Amherst and eighth-ranked Wesleyan College.

Brigitte Hodge  —  Washington University  —  Indianapolis, IN (Park Tudor)

Sophomore Brigitte Hodge posted a 3-1 singles mark during the Washington University four-match trip to California. She earned a 6-2, 7-6 win at fourth singles in the Bears’ 5-4 victory over seventh-ranked Amherst College. Hodge picked up the team’s only point in a loss to eighth-ranked Wesleyan College.

Men’s Tennis

Jonathan Jemison  —  Emory University  —  Marietta, GA (Lassiter)

Emory University sophomore Jonathan Jemison finished 2-0 in singles and doubles as the Eagles won a pair of matches. He dropped only three games in a straight-set win at second singles and teamed with David Omsky for a win at No. 3 doubles in a 9-0 Eagles’ win over Millsaps College. Jemison scored both the first and clinching points in the Eagles’ 5-4 comeback win over 15th-ranked Amherst College. He and Omsky won 8-6 in doubles before he battled to a 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2 triumph to give the Eagles the victory.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Sarah Cook  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Hampton)

Junior Sarah Cook of Carnegie Mellon University recorded the fourth-fastest time in NCAA Division III over the weekend in the 800-meter run at the Washington & Lee University Track and Field Carnival. She crossed the finish line with a personal-best time of 2:16.96 and she ran on the Tartans’ runner-up 1,600-meter relay (4:14.58).

Dani Bland  —  Emory University  —  Mountville, PA (Hempfield)

Sophomore Dani Bland of Emory University ran the fastest time in NCAA Division III during the weekend in the 100-meter dash. She became just the second woman in program history to finish under 12 seconds with a time of 11.99. Bland anchored the Eagles’ 400-meter relay (49.28 seconds) and ran the ninth-fastest Division III time of the weekend in the 200-meter dash in 25.79 seconds at the season-opening Emory Invitational.

Cassandra Laios  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Worthington, OH (Thomas Worthington)

Junior Cassandra Laios recorded the sixth-longest hammer throw in NCAA Division III for Case Western Reserve University over the weekend at the Washington & Lee University Track and Field Carnival. She won the event with a mark of 47.38 meters and finished second in the discus (38.19 meters).

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Ryan Archer  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Vincentian Academy)

Senior Ryan Archer of Carnegie Mellon University ran the third-fastest 10,000-meter time of the weekend in NCAA Division III at the Washington & Lee University Track and Field Carnival. He placed second in the event in 30:51.93, which ranks fifth all-time in program history.

Andrew Ibibo  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Green Bay, WI (Green Bay East)

Junior Andrew Ibibo of Case Western Reserve University ran the third-fastest 400-meter time of the weekend in NCAA Division III at the Washington & Lee University Track and Field Carnival. He won the event in a time of 49.11 seconds and also claimed a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash in 22.72 seconds.

Jacob Schofel  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Livingston, NJ (Livingston)

Junior Jacob Schofel of Carnegie Mellon University won the hammer throw at the Washington & Lee University Track and Field Carnival. His toss of 50.81 meters ranks sixth in NCAA Division III after the opening weekend of the outdoor season. Schofel placed third in the discus with a toss of 42.21 meters.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
