Athletes of the Week for March 27, 2017

Women’s Fencing

Anastasiya Muravyeva  —  NYU  —  Fair Lawn, NJ (Fair Lawn)

NYU sophomore Anastasiya Muravyeva won 10 bouts over two days at the 2017 NCAA Fencing Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. She just missed earning All-America honors by placing 13th in the foil competition.

Men’s Fencing

Grant Williams  —  NYU  —  Atlanta, GA (The Galloway School)

NYU sophomore Grant Williams earned All-America honors at the 2017 NCAA Fencing Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. He finished in sixth place in the sabre to help the Violets finish 11th in the team standings. Williams posted a 15-8 record.

Baseball

Tyler Wypiszenski  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Lemont, IL (Neuqua Valley)

Sophomore catcher/designated hitter Tyler Wypiszenski led Case Western Reserve University to a series split against third-ranked Emory University, batting .571 (8-for-14) with three doubles and seven runs batted in over four games. He hit safely in all four games, finishing the weekend by matching his career game high with six runs batted in and driving in the winning run in the ninth inning of the Spartans’ 20-15 win.

Billy Dimlow  —  Emory University  —  Sammamish, WA (Eastside Catholic)

Sophomore Billy Dimlow tossed eight shutout innings to earn his fifth win of the season as Emory University blanked Case Western Reserve University 4-0 on Friday. He yielded six hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out eight hitters for the fifth time this season.

Women’s Golf

Samantha Haubenstock  —  Washington University  —  Weston, FL (Pine Crest School)

Washington University first-year golfer Samantha Haubenstock won the individual title and helped the Bears capture the team championship at the Joe Duncan Rhodes College Invitational. She shot a two-day total of 145, just one over par, with rounds of 72 and 73. The Bears shot rounds of 302 and 306 to finish two stokes ahead of defending NCAA Division III champion and host Rhodes.

Softball

Taylor Forte  —  Emory University  —  Pleasantville, NY (Rye Country Day)

Emory University senior outfielder Taylor Forte batted .619 (13-for-21) with five runs scored and five runs batted in during a 4-2 week for the Eagles. In a four-game series against Case Western Reserve University, she hit .643 (9-of-14) with multiple hits in all four contests. Forte recorded at least one hit in all six Eagles’ games with two or more hits in five games.

Sami Feller  —  Emory University  —  Coral Springs, FL (Stoneman Douglas)

Emory University first-year pitcher Sami Feller earned both Eagles’ victories in a four-game series split with Case Western Reserve University. She posted an earned run average of 1.05 over 13.1 innings, allowing seven hits, and striking out nine batters. Feller tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout in a 7-0 win that spanned two days, and gave up four hits and two runs in 6.1 innings of the Eagles’ 15-3 victory in the following game.

Anna McKee  —  Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Visitation Academy)

Washington University junior Anna McKee posted a 2-0 record and tossed a pair of complete games at the Washington Invitational. She allowed five hits and four runs (three earned) in a 5-4 win over 10th-ranked Coe College on Friday and then struck out a career-high 14 batters in a 7-0 Bears’ win over Wartburg College on Sunday.

Women’s Tennis

Bridget Harding  —  Emory University  —  Northport, NY (Northport)

Emory University junior Bridget Harding earned a pair of victories to lead the top-ranked Eagles to a 5-4 win over second-ranked Williams College in a rematch of the past two NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship finals. She and Katarina Su won 8-5 at first doubles to extend the Eagles’ lead to  2-0 and then recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.

Men’s Tennis

Nicolas Chua  —  University of Chicago  —  San Carlos, CA (Bellarmine College Preparatory)

University of Chicago junior Nicolas Chua posted a 3-1 record at first singles against four nationally ranked teams, including three in the top-15. Chua registered straight-set wins against his opponents from 13th-ranked Williams College and 14th-ranked Tufts University, while earning a three-set victory over his Colby College opponent. Chua’s only loss was to his opponent from second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Grace Yee  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  San Francisco, CA (Lick-Wilmerding)

Carnegie Mellon University junior Grace Yee broke the program’s outdoor mark in the pole vault at the Tartans’ Mini Invitational. Her clearance of 3.68 meters won the event and ranks eighth in NCAA Division III this season. The Tartans earned the team title.

Dani Bland  —  Emory University  —  Mountville, PA (Hempfield)

Emory University sophomore Dani Bland maintained the top spot on the NCAA Division III leaderboard when she broke the program record in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.70 seconds at the Emory Classic on Saturday. She also climbed to 10th in Division III with her 200-meter dash time of 25.45 seconds. Bland ran on the Eagles’ 1,600-meter relay team that ran the second-fastest time in Division III this season in a time of 4:14.21, and the 400-meter relay that posted a sixth place national time of 48.66. Emory placed fourth in the 26-team field.

Kelli Hancock  —  Washington University  —  San Diego, CA (La Jolla)

Washington University senior Kelli Hancock opened her outdoor season by posting the top NCAA Division III time this season in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.53 at the Washington University Mini Meet. She ran on the Bears’ 1,600-meter relay that posted the top Division III time of 3:49.94. Hancock also ran on the winning 400-meter relay that ran the seventh-fastest time of the season in 48.78 seconds. 

Anna Cossio  —  Washington University  —  Barrington, IL (Barrington)

Washington University first-year competitor Anna Cossio recorded a top-10 high jump performance in NCAA Division III this season at the Bears’ Mini Meet. Her height of 1.60 meters ties for ninth nationally and she also posted the 22nd-fastest time in Division III with a 400-meter hurdles finish of 1:05.81.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Shane Sullivan  —  Emory University  —  Johns Creek, GA (Mt. Pisgah Christian)

Emory University junior Shane Sullivan turned in the top time in NCAA Division III this season in the 5,000 meters. He placed second in his heat with a time of 14:28.05 at the Raleigh Relays against NCAA Division I runners. His time broke the Emory record that stood for more than 31 years.

Everett Kleven  —  Washington University  —  Mill Creek, WA (Henry M. Jackson)

Washington University senior Everett Kleven recorded the second-best top pole vault mark in NCAA Division III this season at the Washington University Mini Meet. His height of 4.70 meters earned him the event title as the Bears won the seven-team competition.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
