Athletes of the Week for April 17, 2017

Baseball

Victor Oppenheimer  —  Brandeis University  —  West Hills, CA (Chaminade)

Brandeis University freshman second baseman Victor Oppenheimer batted .476 (10-for-21) with three runs scored, four doubles, and four runs batted in during a 2-3 week for the Judges. He recorded four multi-hit games, including three in a four-game UAA split with NYU. Oppenheimer finished the weekend hitting 3-for-5 with a walk and three RBI in the Judges’ 12-6 victory over the Violets.

Brad Margolin  —  Washington University  —  Northbrook, IL (Glenbrook North)

Washington University senior Brad Margolin tossed a two-hit shutout with one walk and five strikeouts to lead the Bears to a 1-0 win over host Case Western Reserve University in the first game of a four-game series. The shutout was his second consecutive in UAA play and raised his season record to 6-0, while recording his 20th career win.

Women’s Golf

Jenni Bluetling  —  NYU  —  Feldafing, Germany (Munich International School)

Sophomore Jenni Bluetling won the individual title to lead NYU to the championship at the Amherst College Jack Leaman Invitational. She shot a two-day, two-under par 146 (74-72), the second-best 36-hole score in program history.

Men’s Golf

Luke Oberholtzer  —  NYU  —  Northbrook, IL (Glenbrook North)

Sophomore Luke Oberholtzer of NYU finished in a tie for second place in the 39-player field at the University of Rochester Fred Kravetz Invitational. He shot rounds of 74 and 77 for a two-day total of 151, three strokes behind the individual champion. NYU placed fourth of six teams.

Jack Mulligan  —  University of Rochester  —  Flossmoor, IL (Homewood Flossmoor)

Freshman Jack Mulligan of University of Rochester finished in a tie for second place in the 39-player field as the Yellowjackets hosted the Fred Kravetz Invitational. He carded rounds of 76 and 75 for a two-round total of 151, three strokes behind the individual champion. Rochester placed third of six teams.

Softball

Diana King  —  NYU  —  Rye, NY (Rye Neck)

Sophomore Diana King hit .571 (8-for-14) with nine runs scored, three home runs, and seven runs batted in as NYU took three of four games from host Brandeis University over the weekend. She finished a combined 4-of-7 with five runs scored and a pair of home runs as the Violets swept the Judges 10-2 and 6-3 on Friday. King again went 4-for-7, adding a home run, and four RBI as the teams split on Saturday. In a 4-2 week for the Violets, King batted .550 (11-for-20) with 11 runs scored and five stolen bases in as many attempts.

Anna McKee  —  Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Visitation Academy)

Junior pitcher Anna McKee posted a 2-0 record and a 0.47 earned run average with two complete games against Case Western Reserve University. She limited opponents to a .156 batting average with two walks and 11 strikeouts in 15 innings. McKee tossed a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 win in the first game on Friday, and allowed just one earned run and fanned six, in a 4-3 victory on Saturday’s opening game.

Women’s Tennis

Katarina Su  —  Emory University  —  Alpharetta, GA (Alpharetta)

Emory University senior Katarina Su finished 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles against three teams ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association top 25. She won all three of her singles matches in straight sets at third and fourth singles and earned a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles with Bridget Harding. Su became the seventh player in program history to reach 90 career doubles wins and eighth Eagle to reach 80 career singles victories. The Eagles topped seventh-ranked Tufts University and 22nd-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while falling to sixth-ranked Wesleyan University.

Men’s Tennis

Johnny Wu  —  Washington University  —  West Chester, PA (Unionville)

Washington University junior Johnny Wu posted a pair of wins at first singles to help lead the Bears to victories over University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and fifth-ranked University of Chicago. He dropped just one game in his victory in the Bears’ 7-2 win over UW-Whitewater and then earned a 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 victory in a 5-4 win over the Maroons.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Daisy Ogede  —  Washington University  —  Richton Park, IL (Western Reserve Academy)

Washington University senior Daisy Ogede captured one individual and two relay first-place finishes at the Greenville College Select Meet. She won the 200-meter dash in 24.54 seconds and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.52 seconds. Ogede led off the Bears’ winning 1,600-meter relay (3:50.18) and anchored the victorious 400-meter relay (48.32 seconds).

Grace Yee  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  San Francisco, CA (Lick-Wilmerding)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Grace Yee broke her own school record in the pole vault at the Walsh University Invitational. She cleared the bar at 3.70 meters, topping her previous mark of 3.68 meters, which ranks 15th in NCAA Division III.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Nathaniel Wahner  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Drexel Hill, PA (Upper Darby)

Senior Nathaniel Wahner earned two individual All-Ohio honors to help Case Western Reserve University placed third at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships. He won the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.67 seconds to break the previous mark of 10.78 seconds, to claim the seventh-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season. Wahner also captured the 200-meter dash (22.23 seconds) and ran on the Spartans’ third-place 400-meter relay (42.43 seconds). 

Everett Kleven  —  Washington University  —  Mill Creek, WA (Henry M. Jackson)

Senior Everett Kleven tied his Washington University record height in the pole vault at the Greenville College Select Meet. He placed third as an unattached competitor, just behind an NCAA Division II vaulter, with a mark of 5.05 meters. The height ranks third in NCAA Division III this season.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
