Athletes of the Week for May 1, 2017

Baseball

Ryan Tettemer  —  Brandeis University  —  Westfield, MA (Suffield Academy)

Senior centerfielder Ryan Tettemer led Brandeis University in batting average (.500) and slugging percentage (.833) in a 1-2 week for the Judges. In a 4-1 win at Western New England University, he broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth inning with a two-run triple, scoring on an error on the play. Tettemer finished 2-for-3 with a double in a loss to Trinity College and recorded a double, one of two Brandeis hits, in a loss at Rhode Island College.

Jacob Kucia  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Strongsville, OH (St. Ignatius)

Sophomore third baseman Jacob Kucia batted .571 (4-for-7) with two runs scored as Case Western Reserve University split two games. He finished 2-for-3 with a run scored in the Spartans’ 10-5 loss to fifth-ranked College of Wooster on Tuesday before contributing two hits, including a double, and driving in a run in a  7-4 victory over John Carroll University the following day.

Jake Shields  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Hamilton, OH (Ross Senior)

Senior right-hander Jake Shields earned his program record-tying 24th victory in a 7-4 Case Western Reserve University victory over John Carroll University. He scattered six hits over seven innings, yielding two earned runs (three total), and struck out five. Shields moved to 6-3 with a 2.76 earned run average this season.

Men’s Golf

Jack Mulligan  —  University of Rochester  —  Flossmoor, IL (Homewood Flossmoor)

University of Rochester freshman Jack Mulligan captured second place with a two-round total of 153 to help the Yellowjackets secure a bid to the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship. He also earned medalist honors for the seven-team, 72-hole tournament, which encompassed rounds from the fall and this past weekend.

Softball

Hannah Mehrle  —  Washington University  —  Liberty Township, OH (Ursuline Academy)

Washington University senior outfielder Hannah Mehrle batted .526 (10-for-19) with six runs scored, six doubles, and eight runs batted in during a 4-1 week for the Bears, who took three of four games from NYU to clinch the UAA title. She recorded four multi-hit games, including a 3-for-4 performance with two runs scored, two doubles, and four RBI in a 9-1 win at NYU on Friday.

Katie Dzierwa  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Brookfield, IL (Lyons Township)

Case Western Reserve University junior pitcher Katie Dzierwa threw her first career no-hitter and finished 2-0 in the Spartans’ final games of the season. She pitched six innings and walked just one batter in tossing the no-hitter in the Spartans’ 9-0 win over Heidelberg University on Sunday. For the week, Dzierwa allowed just one run in 10 innings, striking out four.

Men’s Tennis

James Fojtasek  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Cypress, TX (Cypress Woods)

Senior James Fojtasek finished a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles to lead Case Western Reserve University to 9-0 wins over John Carroll University and Franciscan University to close the season. He and sophomore John Benedetto won 9-7 at No. 1 doubles and he defeated the 14th-ranked player in the region, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. He and classmate Phil Gruber teamed up for an 8-2 victory against Franciscan at first doubles and he did not drop a game in his win at first singles.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Grace Yee  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  San Francisco, CA (Lick-Wilmerding)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Grace Yee tied her own program record in the pole vault at the Red Flash Open hosted by Saint Francis University. She cleared the bar at 3.70 meters, which tied her for first place and currently ranks her 20th in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Nathaniel Wahner  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Drexel Hill, PA (Upper Darby)

Senior Nathaniel Wahner of Case Western Reserve University ran on a school record-breaking 1,600-meter relay and added a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash at the Ashland University Alumni Open. The relay finished first at the meet with a time of 3:15.98, topping their mark of 3:16.55 set at the UAA championship the previous week. The time ranks 10th in NCAA Division III this season. Wahner posted a time of 22.33 seconds in the 200 meters.

Jacob Schofel  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Livingston, NJ (Livingston)

Junior Jacob Schofel of Carnegie Mellon University won the hammer throw at the Red Flash Open hosted by Saint Francis University. He won the event with a mark of 53.38 meters and recorded a throw of 45.09 meters in the discus.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
