Athletes of the Week for May 8, 2017

Baseball

Anthony Nomakeo  —  Brandeis University  —  Westfield, MA (Northfield Mount Hermon)

Senior Anthony Nomakeo finished his career with a pair of home runs and seven runs batted in to lead Brandeis University to a 10-4 victory over University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. He entered the game without a career home run and three runs batted in during the season. Nomakeo became the first Judges’ player since 2012 to homer twice in a game and the first player since 2011 with at least five RBI in one game.

Mark Gross  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Aurora, IL (Metea Valley)

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Mark Gross did not allow an earned run over two appearances and eight innings of work in a 2-1 week for Case Western Reserve University. He allowed one unearned run and four hits over seven innings in the Spartans’ 8-5 win over Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday after throwing one hitless inning of relief earlier in the week in a loss to John Carroll University.

Brad Margolin  —  Washington University  —  Northbrook, IL (Glenbrook North)

Senior right-handed pitcher Brad Margolin threw his fifth complete game of the season in a 13-1 Washington University win over Millikin University. He tossed seven innings, allowing four hits and his first earned run in 34 innings. Margolin did not walk a batter and struck out seven.

Softball

Anna Woolery  —  University of Chicago  —  Kansas City, MO (St. Teresa’s Academy)

University of Chicago senior second baseman/outfielder Anna Woolery batted .714 (10-for-16) with six runs scored, a triple, and three runs batted in as the Maroons won three of four games. She finished
5-for-8 with four runs scored in a split with Elmhurst College, and added five hits in six at-bats in the Maroons’ sweep of Lawrence University.

Megan Stoppelman  —  University of Chicago  —  Darien, IL (Benet Academy)

University of Chicago first-year pitcher Megan Stoppelman posted a 2-1 record with a 2.14 earned run average in a 3-1 week for the Maroons. She allowed just one hit without a walk and struck out six in 6.1 innings in a 7-5 Maroons’ victory over Elmhurst College. Stoppelman earned another win, allowing one hit in 5.0 innings, with no walks and four strikeouts, in an 8-0 win over Lawrence University. 

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Ashley Knudson  —  Washington University  —  Coralville, IA (Iowa City West)

Senior Ashley Knudson of Washington University set a personal-best in the 800-meter run at the Indiana State University Twilight Meet. She crossed the finish line in 2:10.96, just short of her 2:10.90 at the UAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which ranks third in NCAA Division III this season. Knudson ran on the 1,600-meter relay team that posted the 18th-fastest time in the nation in 3:52.82.

Heidi Nassos  —  Washington University  —  Wheaton, IL (Wheaton Warrenville South)

Sophomore Heidi Nassos placed fourth in the pole vault at the Indiana State University Twilight Meet. Her distance of 3.54 meters topped all non-NCAA Division I competitors.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Nick Matteucci  —  Washington University  —  Des Peres, MO (Parkway South)

Freshman Nick Matteucci ran the second fastest-time in Washington University history in the 1,500-meter run at the Indiana State University Twilight Meet. He placed seventh against predominantly NCAA Division I competition in a time of 3:49.88, which ranks fifth in NCAA Division III this season.

Charlie Hu  —  Emory University  —  Shanghai, China (Shanghai American School)

Junior Charlie Hu of Emory University shattered his personal record in the triple jump at the University of Georgia Torrin Lawrence Memorial on Saturday. He posted a mark of 14.29 meters, which ranks 33rd in NCAA Division III this season.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
