Athletes of the Week for September 5, 2017

Women’s Cross Country

Khia Kurtenbach  —  University of Chicago  —  Germantown, WI (Germantown)

University of Chicago senior Khia Kurtenbach finished second in an 89-runner field to help lead the Maroons to the team title at the University of St. Francis Invitational. She completed the five-kilometer course in 17:37.1.

Men’s Cross Country

Ryan Cutter  —  University of Chicago  —  El Sobrante, CA (Hercules)

University of Chicago freshman Ryan Cutter placed sixth in the 113-runner field at the University of St. Francis Invitational. He raced to a time of 15:29.3 over the five-kilometer course as the Maroons finished second in the 13-team event.

Football — Offense

John Prather  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Olney, MD (Our Lady of Good Counsel)

Senior wide receiver John Prather became the all-time Carnegie Mellon University leader in receiving yards in the Tartans’ 28-7 win at Washington University. He finished with 146 yards receiving and a touchdown on eight receptions, giving him 2,191 career yards and breaking the previous mark that stood for 44 years. Prather caught three passes for 66 yards in the opening 85-yard touchdown drive.

Justin Phan  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Atlanta, GA (Greater Atlanta Christian)

Junior wide receiver Justin Phan matched the Case Western Reserve University single-game mark with 15 receptions in the Spartans’ 34-14 season-opening victory at University of Chicago. He totaled 112 yards with scoring receptions of 11 and 10 yards to bring the Spartans back from a 14-0 deficit. Phan, who caught eight passes for 65 yards in the third quarter, added two punt returns for 61 yards.

Football — Defense

Stanley Bikulege  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Greer, SC (Saint Joseph’s Catholic)

Senior inside linebacker Stanley Bikulege recorded a game-high 11 tackles, including seven solo hits, as Carnegie Mellon University broke a four-game losing streak in season-openers with a 28-7 victory at Washington University. Early in the second half, he registered his second career interception and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown.

 

Football — Special Teams

Cody Calhoun  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Columbus, OH (Bishop Watterson)

Senior defensive back Cody Calhoun returned three kicks for 92 yards, averaging 30.7 yards per return, in a 34-14 Case Western Reserve University victory at University of Chicago. He added five tackles for the Spartan defense, which limited the Maroons to 21 yards passing in the second half and 117 total.

Women’s Golf

Samantha Haubenstock  —  Washington University  —  Weston, FL (Pine Crest School)

Washington University sophomore Samantha Haubenstock earned medalist honors in the Bears’ dual match with William Woods University. She tied her career-best mark in shooting a three under par 69, five strokes ahead of the runner-up.

Women’s Soccer — Offense

Taylor Cohen  —  Washington University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Sophomore forward Taylor Cohen scored twice and assisted on another goal as defending NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer champions Washington University opened the season with a 4-1 win at DePauw University. She tallied the first goal in the 32nd minute and assisted on the game-winner in the 37th minute.

Women’s Soccer — Defense

Jordan Doak  —  Emory University  —  Chagrin Falls, OH (Hathaway Brown School)

Junior Jordan Doak anchored the Emory University defense that limited two opponents to one goal and nine shots on goal in a pair of victories. She broke a scoreless tie early in the second half of the Eagles’
4-0 win over Pfeiffer University on Monday.

Men’s Soccer — Offense

Max Lopez  —  University of Chicago  —  Tulsa, OK (Cascia Hall)

University of Chicago junior Max Lopez scored three goals and added an assist as the ninth-ranked Maroons opened the season with a pair of victories. He notched the game-winner in the 85th minute of a 2-1 win over Whitworth University on Friday before contributing two goals and an assist in a 4-0 Maroon victory over Knox College.

Men’s Soccer — Defense

Cody Gardiner  —  Emory University  —  Vienna, VA (James Madison)

Emory University senior back Cody Gardiner was named Most Valuable Player of the Sonny Carter Tournament as the Eagles posted a pair of shutout wins. He anchored the defense that surrendered just three combined shots on goal in a 3-0 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan University and 1-0 blanking of Pacific Lutheran University. Gardiner tallied the only goal against Pacific Lutheran.

Calvin Boyle  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Chartiers Valley)

Case Western Reserve University senior goalkeeper Calvin Boyle did not allow a goal in 200 minutes as the Spartans opened the 2017 campaign 1-0-1. He made six stops in the Spartans’ 1-0 win over University of Mount Union and added three saves in a scoreless draw with DePauw University.

Volleyball

Elyse Thompson  —  Emory University  —  Tallahassee, FL (Leon)

Sophomore defensive specialist/libero Elyse Thompson averaged 6.57 digs per set as second-ranked Emory University opened the season 2-1 at the Wittenberg University National Invitational. She tied the program single-match record with 35 digs, adding six assists, and three service aces, as the Eagles battled back from a two-set deficit to defeat Illinois Wesleyan University.

Julianne Malek  —  Washington University  —  The Woodlands, TX (John Cooper)

Junior middle hitter Julianne Malek averaged 3.4 kills and 1.6 blocks per set, while posting a .542 hitting percentage, to help lead third-ranked Washington University to a 2-1 record at the Bear Invitational. She hit .591 with 13 kills and eight blocks in a four-set loss to Cornell College, and followed that with 11 kills, four blocks, and a .588 hitting percentage in the Bears’ sweep of 15th-ranked Hope College.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
