Athletes of the Week for September 25, 2017
Women’s Cross Country
Rachel Bargabos — University of Rochester — Canastota, NY (Canastota)
Junior Rachel Bargabos of University of Rochester finished 38th in a field of 284 runners at the Williams College Purple Valley Classic on Saturday. She completed the six-kilometer course in 23:51.1 as the Yellowjackets placed 16th in the 26-team field that featured 10 nationally ranked squads.
Men’s Cross Country
Hunter Phinney — University of Rochester — Cattaragus, NY (Cattaragus-Little Valley)
Junior Hunter Phinney of University of Rochester placed 114th in the 324-runner field at the Williams College Purple Valley Classic on Saturday. He finished the eight-kilometer course in a time of 28:24.7 for the Yellowjackets, who placed 19th of 26 teams.
Football – Offense
Alex Cline — Carnegie Mellon University — Dublin, OH (Dublin Jerome)
Carnegie Mellon University junior quarterback Alex Cline accounted for four touchdowns and 267 yards of offense to lead the Tartans to a 37-17 win over Thomas More College. He completed 16 of 20 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed seven times for a career-high 90 yards and another score. The Tartans moved to 4-0, their best season start since the 2012 season.
Football – Defense
Jacob Johnson — Carnegie Mellon University — Terre Haute, IN (Terre Haute South Vigo)
Carnegie Mellon University senior Jacob Johnson recovered a fumble and returned an interception 22 yards to lead the Tartans to their best start since 2012 with a 37-17 win over Thomas More College. He added four tackles, three solo, and a pass breakup.
Jackson Ross — University of Chicago — Norman, OK (Heritage Hall)
University of Chicago defensive lineman Jackson Ross led the defensive effort that limited Illinois College to 59 yards rushing and 182 yards of total offense in the Maroons’ 28-7 victory. The freshman made seven tackles with four solo hits, one sack, a pass breakup, and two tackles for loss totaling nine yards.
Football – Special Teams
Tyler Kohman — Carnegie Mellon University — Pataskala, OH (Columbus Academy)
Carnegie Mellon University senior Tyler Kohman averaged 46.7 yards per punt on six kicks in a 37-17 Tartan win over Thomas More College. He dropped four punts inside the Saints’ 20-yard line, including two inside the five-yard line. Kohman, who connected on three punts of more than 50 yards, also booted a 42-yard field goal.
Women’s Golf
Charlotte Simpson — Carnegie Mellon University — Towson, MD (Bryn Mawr School)
First-year golfer Charlotte Simpson claimed individual medalist honors at the Allegheny College Invitational with a two-round score of three-over-par 149, the lowest two-round score in Carnegie Mellon University history. She shot rounds of 75 and 74 on the par-73 Country Club of Meadville course to help guide the Tartans to a third-place finish in the 13-team field.
Ashley Lung — NYU — Henderson, NV (Coronado)
First-year golfer Ashley Lung of NYU shot a three-over-par 147 to finish second individually at the Mount Holyoke College Invitational. Her second round score of 73 marked the second-best score in the 101-player field and helped lead the Violets to a second-place finish in the 18-team tournament.
Men’s Golf
Jason Paek — University of Rochester — Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)
Senior Jason Paek earned medalist honors at a seven-team tournament at Timber Banks Golf Club in Baldwinsville, NY. After carding a two-over-par 74 in the opening round, he matched par in the second round for a two-day total of 146. Paek led the field in par-4 scoring (even par) and par-5 scoring (one under par) to help the Yellowjackets to the team title, finishing 14 strokes ahead of the runner-up.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Haili Adams — Carnegie Mellon University — Kirkland, WA (Juanita)
Carnegie Mellon University senior forward Haili Adams recorded four goals and three assists in three Tartan victories. She opened the week with one goal and a pair of assists in a shutout win over Allegheny College on Wednesday and followed with an assist on the only goal in a 1-0 Tartan win over Washington & Jefferson College. Adams registered her third multi-goal game of her career with the hat trick in a 7-0 victory over Westminster College (PA) on Sunday.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Meghan Marhan — NYU — Glen Ridge, NJ (Glen Ridge)
NYU first-year goalkeeper Meghan Marhan recorded four saves each in a pair of shutouts in her first two career starts. She played all 110 minutes in the Violets’ scoreless draw with University of Scranton and earned the win in a 3-0 win over State University of New York at Farmingdale.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Jason McCartney — Emory University — Raleigh, NC (Enloe)
Senior Jason McCartney scored two goals and contributed an assist in two Emory University wins. He netted the game-winning goal in the 81st minute of the Eagles’ 1-0 victory over Maryville College on Wednesday before scoring once and assisting on another goal in a 3-0 Eagle win over Carthage College on Saturday.
Max Lopez — University of Chicago — Tulsa, OK (Cascia Hall)
Junior forward Max Lopez scored two goals and contributed an assist in two University of Chicago wins. He scored his NCAA Division III leading fifth game-winning goal of the season in a 1-0 Maroons’ win over Wheaton College (IL) on Wednesday and then added a goal and assist in a 3-1 victory over Elmhurst College on Saturday.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Grant Engel — NYU — New York, NY (The Birch Wathen Lenox School)
Junior goalkeeper Grant Engel made eight saves en route to recording his second shutout of the season in a 2-0 NYU win over Manhattanville College on Saturday. The victory was the Violets’ first over the Valiants since 2009.
Women’s Tennis
Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico — Emory University — Pinecrest, FL (Gulliver Preparatory)
Emory University first-year player Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico captured both the singles and doubles titles at the ITA Division III South Regional in Sewanee, TN. She won all five of her singles matches, defeating senior teammate and defending ITA national champion Bridget Harding in the final. Gonzalez-Rico added the doubles crown with Harding, as the duo won all four of their matches.
Bridget Harding — Emory University — Northport, NY (Northport)
Emory University senior Bridget Harding reached the singles final and captured the doubles title at the ITA Division III South Regional in Sewanee, TN. She won four singles matches before falling to teammate Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico in the final. Harding and Gonzalez-Rico won all four of their matches to earn the doubles title.
Anna Maria Buraya — NYU — Toronto, Canada (Bayview Glenn School)
First-year player Anna Maria Buraya became the first NYU woman to win an ITA regional title by capturing the championship at the ITA Division III Northeast Regional in Saratoga Springs, NY. She won all six of her matches to capture the title and also reached the doubles final with Judy Kam.
Coco Kulle — NYU — Vienna, Austria (Choate Rosemary Hall, CT)
Flyora Shiyanova — NYU — St. Legier, Vaud, Switzerland (ES International School)
NYU sophomore Coco Kulle and junior Flyora Shiyanova won the doubles title at the ITA Division III Northeast Regional in Saratoga Springs, NY. The tandem defeated teammates Anna Maria Buraya and Judy Kam in the final to become the Violets’ first ITA regional doubles champions since 2014.
Grace Deering — Washington University — Charlotte, NC (Charlotte Catholic)
Ally Persky — Washington University — Solon, OH (Hathaway Brown)
Washington University senior Grace Deering and first-year player Ally Persky won the doubles title at the ITA Division III Central Regional in Oberlin, OH. The tournament’s second seed won all five of their matches to earn the title.
Men’s Tennis
David Aizenberg — Brandeis University — Highland Park, IL (Highland Park)
Anupreeth Coramutla — Brandeis University — Monroe Township, NJ (Phillips Academy)
Sophomore David Aizenberg and freshman Anupreeth Coramutla of Brandeis University advanced to the finals of the “A” doubles bracket at the Middlebury College Invitational. The duo opened with an upset over the second-seeded team from Tufts University before knocking off two squads from Skidmore College. Aizenberg and Coramutla fell 8-6 in the final to a team from the host Panthers.
Volleyball
Lauren Mueller — Carnegie Mellon University — Downingtown, PA (Downingtown STEM Academy)
Junior outside hitter Lauren Mueller led 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University to five more wins as the Tartans improved to a program-best 16-0 mark to start the season. She averaged 3.61 kills and 2.78 digs per set, hitting at a .348 clip. Mueller contributed 17 kills and 21 digs in the Tartans’ come-from-behind five-set win over previously undefeated Otterbein University, and hit .429 with 17 kills as the Tartans handed University of Mount Union its second loss of the season.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
