Athletes of the Week for October 2, 2017
Women’s Cross Country
Emily Bryson — Brandeis University — Quincy, MA (North Quincy)
Brandeis University junior Emily Bryson finished first at the Keene State College Invitational, leading a group of five Judges in the top 10. She covered the five-kilometer course in 17:38 for her fourth career individual title.
Men’s Cross Country
David O’Gara — Washington University — Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)
Washington University senior David O’Gara ran a career-best eight-kilometer time of 24:29.44 at the Millikin H.W. Wright Classic on Friday evening. His time led the field as the Bears posted a perfect score in the nine-team meet.
Football – Offense
John Prather — Carnegie Mellon University — Olney, MD (Our Lady of Good Counsel)
Senior wide receiver John Prather tied the Carnegie Mellon University single-game record with 10 receptions and caught a career-high four touchdown passes as the Tartans remained undefeated with a 45-14 victory at Bethany College. He finished with 122 receiving yards and became the program’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions with 22, breaking the 50-year-old school record of 21 set by Richard Bell from 1964-67.
Rob Cuda — Case Western Reserve University — Bartlett, IL (South Elgin)
Senior quarterback Rob Cuda threw for a career-high 357 yards and accounted for all five Case Western Reserve University touchdowns in a 35-14 Spartans’ victory at St. Vincent College. He tossed four scoring passes and ran for another touchdown while recording his second consecutive 300-yard passing game, the sixth of his career.
Football – Defense
Dan Techman — Case Western Reserve University — Morgantown, PA (Twin Valley)
Senior defensive end Dan Techman recorded six tackles, including three tackles for loss and two sacks, as Case Western Reserve University defeated host St. Vincent College 35-14. He batted down a pass at the line and forced a fumble as the Spartans held the Bearcats scoreless on just 119 yards through three quarters and to only 44 yards rushing in the game.
Jeremy Vincent — University of Chicago — Santa Clarita, CA (Oaks Christian)
Junior defensive back Jeremy Vincent intercepted a pair of passes to lead University of Chicago’s defense in a 55-10 victory over Cornell College. He added three tackles as the Maroons held Cornell 36 points under their scoring average and forced eight turnovers.
Football – Special Teams
Tyler Kohman — Carnegie Mellon University — Pataskala, OH (Columbus Academy)
Senior Tyler Kohman of Carnegie Mellon University, the leading punter in NCAA Division III, averaged 49.8 yards per punt on five punts and kicked a 33-yard field goal. He kicked three punts more than 50 yards and placed the other two punts inside the Bisons’ 20-yard line, one on the 8-yard line and the other at the 12. Kohman also converted all five extra-point attempts.
Men’s Golf
Jensen Li — NYU — Sunnyvale, CA (Bellarmine College Prep)
Sophomore Jensen Li tied teammate Patrick McNary for the individual title as NYU won its second consecutive ECAC Men’s Golf Championship title. He shot a two-round score of 146 (73-73) to help the Violets to their second team title in three tournaments this fall.
Patrick McNary — NYU — Ranchos Palos Verdes, CA (Palos Verdes)
Freshman Patrick McNary tied teammate Jensen Li for the individual title as NYU won its second consecutive ECAC Men’s Golf Championship title. He shot a two-round score of 146 (74-72) to help the Violets to their second team title in three tournaments this fall.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Taylor Cohen — Washington University — Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)
Sophomore forward Taylor Cohen scored a pair of game-winning goals as second-ranked Washington University remained unbeaten with victories over Webster University and Emory University. She netted the lone goal in the 19th minute in the Bears’ 1-0 UAA opening win over the host Eagles. Earlier in the week, Cohen tallied the first goal in a 4-0 Bears’ victory over previously undefeated Webster.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Emma Greenfield — Washington University — St. Paul, MN (Minnehaha Academy)
First-year goalkeeper Emma Greenfield made four saves to record the shutout as second-ranked Washington University topped 21st-ranked Emory University 1-0 in the UAA opener for both schools on Saturday. She did not yield a goal playing the second half of the Bears’ 4-0 victory over Webster University on Tuesday.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Matthew Koh — University of Chicago — Santa Monica, CA (Loyola)
University of Chicago junior forward Matthew Koh totaled two goals and three assists as the top-ranked Maroons moved to 10-0-0 with two road wins. He scored twice and assisted on another goal in a 4-1 Maroons’ victory at University of Rochester on Saturday. Koh assisted on two scores in a 3-1 Chicago win at Benedictine University on Wednesday.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Aidan Datene — Emory University — Cordlandt Manor, NY (Hendrick Hudson)
Emory University junior back Aidan Datene led the Eagles’ defense that limited UAA rival Washington University to four shots on goal in a 2-1 win in the UAA opener for both teams on Saturday. He also netted the Eagles’ first goal of the game.
Women’s Tennis
Vinaya Rao — Carnegie Mellon University — Vernon Hills, IL (Adlai E. Stevenson)
Melissa Strome — Carnegie Mellon University — West Bloomfield, MI (West Bloomfield)
Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Vinaya Rao and first-year player Melissa Strome captured the doubles title at the ITA Division III Southeast Region Championships in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The duo captured the final match 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 over teammates Cori Sidell and Courtney Ollis to advance to the ITA Oracle Cup.
Claire Handa — University of Chicago — Rockville Centre, NY (Friends Academy)
University of Chicago first-year competitor Claire Handa won all five of her matches to earn the singles title at the ITA Division III Central Region Championships. She won her first four matches in Oberlin, Ohio to advance to the final. Handa captured the title match back on the Chicago campus on Monday, edging teammate Marjorie Antohi 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Men’s Tennis
Jonathan Jemison — Emory University — Marietta, GA (Lassiter)
Junior Jonathan Jemison of Emory University captured the singles title at the ITA Division III South Region Championships in Rome, Georgia. He rattled off six wins in the main draw to become the 11th Eagles’ player over the past 12 years to earn the singles crown. Jemison and freshman teammate Hayden Cassone, whom he defeated in the singles semifinals, advanced to the doubles final before falling to teammates Adrien Bouchet and Will Wanner.
Adrien Bouchet — Emory University — Oakton, VA (Oakton)
Will Wanner — Emory University — Lancaster, PA (Lancaster Mennonite)
Junior Adrien Bouchet and freshman Will Wanner of Emory University won the doubles title at the ITA Division III South Region Championships in Rome, Georgia. The duo defeated three consecutive pairs of doubles teammates to earn the victory, including an 8-2 win over the top seeds James Spaulding and Scott Rubinstein in the semifinals, and a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Jonathan Jemison and Hayden Cassone in the final.
Tyler Raclin — University of Chicago — St. Louis, MO (Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day)
Jeremy Yuan — University of Chicago — Johns Creek, GA (Northview)
Sophomore Tyler Raclin and freshman Jeremy Yuan of University of Chicago won the doubles title at the ITA Division III Central Region Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The tandem won two matches to advance to the semifinals, where they upended top-seeded teammates Erik Kerrigan and Ninan Kumar 8-4. In the final, Raclin and Yuan fell behind Washington University’s second-seeded combination of Konrad Kozlowski and Jason Haugen, 4-6, 3-5, before taking the final four games of the second set to send the match to a tiebreaker. The Maroon team won six of the final seven points to take the tiebreaker 10-8.
Volleyball
Lauren Mueller — Carnegie Mellon University — Downingtown, PA (Downingtown STEM Academy)
Carnegie Mellon University junior outside hitter Lauren Mueller averaged an Association-best 4.75 kills per set and hit .377 as the Tartans won two of three matches at the first UAA round robin. She hit .395 and finished with 17 kills and 13 digs in the Tartans’ four-set victory over 18th-ranked Washington University on Sunday. Mueller opened the weekend with 20 kills and 19 digs against host Case Western Reserve University.
Audrey Scrafford — University of Chicago — Austin, TX (Lake Travis)
University of Chicago junior outside hitter/right side Audrey Scrafford averaged 3.30 kills per set with a .283 hitting percentage to help lead the Maroons to a 3-0 mark at the first UAA round robin, the only team to go undefeated over the weekend. She totaled 13 kills and hit .270 as the Maroons defeated third-ranked and defending UAA champion Emory University on Sunday. Scrafford recorded 14 kills in a three-set win over University of Rochester on Saturday.
Kayla Yew — Carnegie Mellon University — San Francisco, CA (Sacred Heart Cathedral)
Carnegie Mellon University sophomore libero Kayla Yew averaged 7.17 digs per set as the 10th-ranked Tartans finished 2-1 at the opening UAA round robin. She recorded a weekend-high 35 digs in the Tartans’ four-set win over NYU. Yew totaled 27 digs in a four-set loss to Case Western Reserve University and added 24 in a four-set victory over 18th-ranked Washington University.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Niamh O’Grady — Washington University — Sarasota, FL (Riverview)
Senior Niamh O’Grady swam two top-10 individual and relay times as Washington University finished fourth at the Show-Me-Showdown, which featured six schools from NCAA Division I and II. She placed seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (57.20 seconds) and 10th in the 100-yard backstroke (58.99 seconds), while also swimming on the fourth-place 400-yard freestyle relay (3:35.67) and the 10th-place 200-yard medley relay (1:50.26).
Laura Barber — Washington University — Decatur, GA (The Westminster Schools)
Senior Laura Barber of Washington University earned a fifth-place finish in the one-meter dive at the Show-Me-Showdown, which featured six schools from NCAA Division I and II. She earned a score of 194.85 on the one-meter board and added a 10th-place finish in the three-meter event with a score of 214.70.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Brandon Lum — Washington University — Ventura, CA (Ventura)
Junior Brandon Lum scored multiple points for Washington University at the season-opening Show-Me-Showdown, which featured seven schools from NCAA Division I and II. He placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (50.06 seconds) and 17th in the 100-yard backstroke (53.44 seconds). Lum swam on the 13th-place 200-yard medley relay (1:35.96).
Ryan Nathenson — Washington University — Newton, CT (Newton)
Senior Ryan Nathenson earned a fourth-place finish in the one-meter dive at the Show-Me-Showdown, which featured seven schools from NCAA Division I and II. He posted a score of 223.20 on the one-meter board and added a ninth-place finish in the three-meter dive with a mark of 208.10.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
