NCAA Tournament Trail Ends in Sweet Sixteen

The 2012-13 season for UW-Whitewater women's tennis came to an end Sunday with a 5-1 loss at the University of Chicago in the third round of the NCAA III championship tournament.  UW-W, 21-9 in dual meets, advanced to the sweet sixteen of the national championship for the second year in a row.

Chicago began the day winning two of the three doubles flights.  Whitewater prevailed at one doubles, where Whitewater's Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) and Sydney Divelbiss (Middleton/Middleton), ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region, beat Megan Tang and Helen Sdizkhov of Chicago, number one in the regional ranking, 9-7. 

Chicago then won the matches at three, six and one singles, reaching the majority and ending the match.  Whitewater's Sydney Divelbiss (Middleton/Middleton), twelfth in the Central Region, matched up with Chicago's Tang, number one in the region.  That match went 6-2, 6-4 to Tang.  At two singles, Whitewater's Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North), twenty-first in the Central Region, faced fifteenth ranked Linden Li, and Bayliss won the first set 6-3 and the second was tied 3-3 when Chicago reached its fifth point.

UW-W and Chicago met earlier this spring, with Chicago defeating the Warhawks 9-0 in Greencastle, Indiana March 1. 

UW-Whitewater was making its sixth consecutive NCAA III championship tournament appearance.

UW-Whitewater defeated Carleton College 5-3 Saturday in the second round of the Chicago Regional of the NCAA Division III championship tournament. 

Whitewater held a 2-1 lead after doubles play.  Megan Kasten (Verona/Verona) and Jackie Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) won at two doubles, and Lauren Aguilar (Gurnee, IL/Carmel Catholic ) and Kelly Foster (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard West ) won three doubles. 

Carleton then won at five singles to even the match 2-2, and CC won at three singles to take a 3-2 lead.  Kasten broke that momentum with a win at four singles, evening the score at 3-3.  Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) at two singles and Erika Williams (Burnsville, MN/Lakeville South) at flight six got UW-W fourth and fifth points.  In NCAA tournament play a match is stopped when a team reaches a majority (five).

Whitewater is ranked fifth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region poll.  Carleton is seventh.  Whitewater's Sydney Divelbiss (Middleton/Middleton), twelfth in the region, and Carleton's Bridget Doyle, twenty-second, did not finish their match.  UW-W's Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North), twenty-first, topped Anne Lombardi, twenty-third, at two singles.  Dyle and Lombardi teamed up to win flight one doubles, besting Divelbiss and Bayliss.

UW-W, ranked twenty-sixth in the ITA national poll, will face the host school, the University of Chicago, 17-5 and tied for eighth in the poll, Sunday at noon to advance to the championship finals in Kalamazoo, Michigan May 20-22.

UW-W will be playing in the third round, the sweet sixteen of the national tourney, for the second year in a row.  Last year the Warhawks defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 5-0 and Washington University-Saint Louis 5-1 before falling to the University of Chicago 5-0.

The UW-Whitewater women's tennis team, ranked twenty-sixth in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, will make their sixth consecutive appearance in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Tournament Friday, May 10 through Sunday, May 12 on the campus of the University of Chicago.

The Warhawks will take part in a six-team regional in Chicago, Illinois. UW-W and the host school, top ranked Chicago, will receive a bye in the first round. UW-W's first match is set for Saturday, May 11 at 10 am. Whitewater will face the winner a Friday match between Grinnell (14-8) and seventh ranked Carleton (15-7). Chicago (16-5) will face the winner of a Friday contest between thirteenth ranked Ohio Northern (26-4) and Edgewood College (18-11).

UW-W is 20-8 in dual matches this season and have won the last eight matches including a sweep in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Final Four Automatic Qualifying Tournament. The Warhawks played four of the other five teams in the regional this season. UW-W swept Edgewood College 9-0, defeated Carlton 5-4 and beat Grinnell College 7-2. Chicago topped Whitewater 9-0 in the ITA Division III Women's Indoor Championships in March.

Sydney Divelbiss (Middleton/Middleton), ranked twelfth in the nation individually, is 11-10 at number one singles and 21-12 overall this season. Her doubles partner, Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) is ranked twenty-first and holds a 15-4 record at number two singles and 27-8 overall mark. Together, the duo is 19-6 overall and ranks ninth nationally.

Fifty teams are selected to compete in the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships. The tournament is single-elimination format with the first three rounds played at regional sites. The team championships finals will be hosted by Kalamazoo College at the Stow Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan May 20-22. Individuals selected to compete to compete in the individual championships will be announced Wednesday, May 8. 

In formation of the 50-team field, 38 schools earn automatic berths into the championships by winning their conference championship. Three teams are selected from independents and schools from conferences that do not have an automatic bid for their championship. The remaining nine teams are selected from teams that did not win their conference championship, thus not receiving the automatic bid.

The Warhawks fell in the third round of the NCAA III Championships to Chicago in 2012. Williams won the 2012 NCAA title after defeating the University of Chicago 5-2.
