Southwestern splits on Saturday

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University baseball team split a pair of contests Saturday at Rockwell Field. The Pirates rolled past Pacific (Ore.), 19-7, but dropped the nightcap to No. 2 Emory, 8-1.

Southwestern (1-5) pounded out 19 hits in the win over the Boxers, including six for extra bases.

The Pirates scored at least one run in each of the first seven frames. SU plated five runs in both the first and sixth innings.

Colby Schmidt was 2-for-3 with a double, a homer and four RBIs. Tyler Bludau came off the bench to record a double and drive in three runs. Austyn Laird and Colten Shea each added a pair of hits and two RBIs.

Meanwhile, Jonah Rohne (1-0) picked up the win in relief.

In the nightcap, Emory manufactured a run in the second on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles took advantaged of an error in the third to score another, and the visitors added two more in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.

Southwestern's lone run came in the eighth as Michael Ilardi crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by Will Cates.

Emory then scored four times in the ninth inning to pull away.

Hayden Holley (0-1) was saddled with the loss. The left-hander gave up seven hits, four runs (three earned) and struck out three over eight innings of work.

The Pirates will face Piedmont at 11 a.m. Sunday.
