Blue Jays earn 10th win with sweep of Rochester, fall to No. 15 Eastern in BJC finale

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown authored a 3-0 sweep of Rochester Saturday at the Days Inn Blue Jay Classic for its 10th win in 13 matches and came out on fire against No. 15 Eastern in the finale, taking the first set from the Eagles before dropping a 3-1 decision.

Behind a well-balanced effort the Blue Jays (10-4) outperformed Rochester in every set. Mackenzie Garner had eight kills, Kristina Smith six and Janae Moran five. Steph High contributed 20 assists, five digs and a solo block, while nine different players recorded digs.

E-town was efficient in subduing the Yellowjackets (8-4), taking the match by 25-20, 25-11 and 25-13 scores. The Jays were especially so in the second set where they countered Rochester's 15 attacking errors with a errorless one. Elizabethtown hit a splendid .412 compared to the -.276 put forth by the visitors en route to a commanding 14-point win.

Garner had three of her kills in the third and Brynne Kirsch came on to stymie Rochester with four aces. Smith, coming off a double-double Friday against Cabrini, finished with eight digs to complement her six kills. With the victory, E-town recorded its quickest 10 wins to start a season since 2012, when it also started 10-3.

A midday break that saw the Jays idle during the 1 p.m. matches at the BJC did little to slow their momentum. Smith connected for four more kills, Janae Moran provided three and Kristin Halliday registered eight assists as the Blue and Gray had thoughts of an upset on their mind again, grabbing the opening set from No. 15 Eastern, 25-15.

Elizabethtown's offensive clicked at a blistering .345 (12 kills-2 errors-29 attempts) rate in the first set, but the Eagles recovered to hit .344 or higher in the next three sets and cap an unbeaten weekend with 25-18, 25-10 and 25-18 wins in sets 2-4.

Tournament MVP Rikki Schlager totaled 45 assists and nine digs and when she was setting the table, she knew right where to go. All-tournament team selection Stephanie Elechko was the beneficiary of 27 Schlager assists and Erin Hillman added 19 kills. Hillman finished with a double-double of 19 kills, 10 digs, while libero Rylie Haas had 16 digs and Miranda Kauffman 10.

E-town was led by another Smith double-double (10 kills, 12 digs), 10 kills from Moran, eight off the right hand of Juliana Mowen.

Halliday paced the Blue Jays with 25 assists and also had six digs and three kills. Shannon Deck, who was named to the all-tournament team, recorded 16 digs and four assists.

The Blue Jays get into Landmark Conference play Tuesday as they travel to Moravian for a 7 p.m. first serve.
