Near Misses Lead To UR's 0-0 Draw With Fisher

Aided by some strong goalkeeping and some narrow misses, host University of Rochester and visiting St. John Fisher College battled to a 0-0 double-overtime draw on Tuesday evening at Fauver Stadium in men's soccer action.

Rochester (2-0-1) combined to outshoot the Cardinals (1-0-2) 19-5, but Fisher keeper Joe Catalfamo made five saves, all of which were on excellent chances to preserve the shutout.  In UR's goal, Redd Brown made two saves in his second shutout of the year.

The opening 45 minutes saw each team generate two scoring opportunities.  Rochester was first at the 14-minute mark when Geoffrey Rouin dribbled his way through three Cardinal defenders to get 1-on-1 with Catalfamo, but the goalie broke up the chance after Rouin's last touch was a bit too hard off his foot.

At 21:43 into the game, UR's Crisitan Baltier received a great cross from deep in the box along the left side from teammate Mitch Volis, but Baltier's attempt sailed wide.

The visiting Cardinals were able to generate their first solid scoring effort just over a minute later at 22:59. There, Fisher's Justin Ferron received the ball in the box about 12 yards out off of a long throw in, but Brown was there to stop his low hard shot at the left corner.

With seven and half minutes left in the first half, St. John Fisher had possibly its best chance of the game when a collision in the box led to bodies flying around and an open net, but Matt Soos' shot sailed high and wide.

The second half was all UR, with the Yellowjackets outshooting the Cardinals 11-1.

At 55:07, Rochester's Josh Cooley ripped a hard blast from in close on the right wing, but Catalfamo was there to make the save.  Great passing from Volis and Alex Di Perna set up Cooley on the play.

Two minutes later, Cooley had another golden opportunity to find the back of the net, this time with his head, but the header attempt off of another great service from Volis along the left side ended up going just left of the goal.

Rouin led UR with six shots on Tuesday.

Di Perna then narrowly missed a goal in the 65th minute after he was open alone at the far post on a long throw in, kicking the ball wide.

The final chance for Rochester in the second half was courtesy of Rouin and Baltier in the crease at the 76-minute mark.  After a scramble, Rouin slipped a shot attempt past Catalfamo in the net, but the ball was headed wide so Baltier came sliding in, only to narrowly miss connecting for what would have been a tap in goal.

After a shotless first overtime, Rouin blasted a hard shot from 12 yards out at 104:27, but Catalfamo again stood tall, making an outstanding diving save to keep his team in it.

Less than two minutes later, more solid passing, this time from Rouin to Cooley and eventually Aleks Dombrowski's head gave UR a point blank chance, but the Cardinal goalie was there to stop it for the final time on the night.

Rouin ended with six shots, three of which were on goal for the Yellowjackets, while Cooley ripped off four shot attempts on the night.

The Yellowjackets next game is slated for Saturday afternoon at Hobart College, with kick off starting at 3 pm.
