St. Aubin ties MIAC career points record in final game

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Playing in her final collegiate game, Ashley St. Aubin (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS) scored the 71st goal of her career and tied the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's career record for total points with 173, as her Augsburg University women's soccer team's season came to an end with a 4-1 loss to the University of Chicago in an NCAA Division III national playoff second-round game on Sunday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Univ. of Chicago (Ill.) 4, Augsburg 1
LOCATION: Amos Alonzo Stagg Field, Chicago, Ill.
RECORDS: Augsburg 15-4-2 overall, Chicago 14-2-3 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• St. Aubin scored Augsburg's lone goal at the 79:30 mark, scoring on a rebound off her initial shot saved by the Chicago goalkeeper. The goal was her 18th of the season, tying her for the MIAC's lead in goals scored and putting her at a league-high 45 points on the season. She recorded a goal or assist in 18 of Augsburg's 21 games this season. St. Aubin has led the MIAC in both goals and total points in each of her four seasons.
• Chicago, ranked No. 16 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III national poll, scored twice in a 3:07 span midway through the first half, then scored goals in the 59th and 82nd minutes to secure the victory, advancing to the "Sweet Sixteen" round of the 64-team NCAA Division III national tournament.
• Augsburg had two good chances to score in the first half, as a shot by Megan Howard (FY, Lakeland, Minn./Stillwater HS) hit the crossbar in the 10th minute, and a shot by Sam Donahugh (FY, Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago HS) went off a give-and-go between St. Aubin and Gabriela Encarnacion (SR, Bel Air, Md./Bel Air HS) sailed just high in the 39th minute.
• Chicago outshot Augsburg by a 22-10 margin, including a 12-4 advantage in the second half. The Maroons had 14 shots on-goal to Augsburg's four. Both teams had four corner kicks in the game.
• For the second day in a row, Emily Chapman (SR, Elburn, Ill./Kaneland HS) set a season-high in saves, recording 10 saves, including seven in the second half.
• St. Aubin had three shots in the game, while Encarnacion, Howard and Donahugh had two shots each.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With her assist in Augsburg's 1-0 overtime win over Rose-Hulman (Ind.) on Saturday and her goal on Sunday, St. Aubin tied the MIAC's record for career total points with 173, first set by Heidi Campbell of Saint Mary's (1984-87) 32 years ago. St. Aubin had already set the conference's career goals record, and finished her career with school records for both goals (71) and points (173). Her 31 career assists are second-most in Augsburg history. Campbell had finished her college career with 62 goals and an MIAC-record-tying 49 assists in 1987.
• St. Aubin scored at least one goal in 55 games in her 83-game career, and the Auggies were 48-6-1 when she scored a goal.
• Augsburg is now 3-3 in its three NCAA Division III national tournament appearances in school history, with all three of its NCAA losses coming at Chicago. The Auggies dropped a 2-0 decision to the Maroons in 2016, and a 3-0 decision in 2014.
• Augsburg's 15 wins are its second-most in a single season in school history, behind its 18-5 overall record in 2016. This is the eighth straight season that Augsburg has had double-digit wins.
• Sunday's contest was the final game of the collegiate careers of five Augsburg seniors -- St. Aubin, Encarnacion, Chapman, Olivia House (SR, Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) and Jada Olson (SR, Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS). The senior class combined for a 59-20-4 (.735) overall and 33-8-3 (.784) MIAC record in their four seasons, with two MIAC regular-season championships (2017, 2019), an MIAC playoff title (2016), three MIAC playoff title game appearances (2016, 2018, 2019) and two NCAA Division III national tournament appearances (2016, 2019).

FOR THE FOES
• Annie Mitchell scored in the 20th minute and Hanna Watkins scored in the 23rd minute for Chicago, both on unassisted goals.
• Adrianna Vera scored from Watkins and Katie Jasminski in the 59th minute, and Adriana Shutler scored from Claudia Hodgetts in the 82nd minute.
• Miranda Malone had three saves in goal for the Maroons.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "Today was tough because we had the chances to go up on them early and didn't put them away. Credit to Chicago for taking advantage of their opportunities. At this stage of the tournament, you're going to play a great team and you simply need to capitalize in the key moments. That being said, I'm very proud of our performance. The score line doesn't necessarily reflect how the game was played. With limited rest, we still competed strong and created the moments we needed."
• "It's especially tough to say goodbye to this senior class. As first-years in 2016, we lost to Chicago in the NCAA second round as well. Despite not being able to beat Chicago today, it was still gratifying to get back here and compete at the highest level of Division III. The talent and leadership in our senior class is irreplaceable. Our only choice is to construct a new version of Augsburg women's soccer, one that honors the legacy that Emily, Gabby, Olivia, Jada and Ashley leave. It's a daunting task, but as our program always does, we will say 'YES! to the Adventure'!"
