#ECVB sweeps Cabrini, nearly knocks off No. 22 Carnegie Mellon

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown volleyball put forth an impressive first day at the 2015 Days Inn Blue Jay Classic, sweeping Cabrini, 3-0, and taking 22nd-ranked Carnegie Mellon to the wire before dropping a 3-2 heartbreaker.

The Blue Jays climbed out of a two-set hole to take a pair of two-point wins in the third (25-23) and fourth (27-25) sets against the once beaten Tartans (12-1).

Sarah Schneider came on in the third set and helped turn things around with four kills, while Kristina Smith (five) and Janae Moran (four) combined for nine of the Blue Jays' (9-3) 14 kills in the fourth set victory.

Elizabethtown took a 10-5 lead in the fifth set and served for the match after Juliana Mowen's made it 14-13. A well-tested Carnegie Mellon side, which suffered its first loss of the season just a few hours earlier at the hands of No. 15 Eastern, showed its pension for pulling out close matches, scoring the next three points on kills from Sarah Jurgens and Jackie Gibbons to claim the set, 16-14, and the match.

Moran sprayed a match-high 20 kills at the Tartans, with Smith adding 13 kills and 15 digs, and Mackenzie Garner 10 kills. Steph High set a new season-high with 44 assists, chipping in two aces, a matching number of kills and seven digs along the way. Shannon Deck (24) and Megan McNaul (14) joined Smith with double-digit digs.

Gibbons and Eliza Donohue helped propel Carnegie Mellon to the win. Gibbons led CMU with 14 kills and added five block assists. Donohue had 10 kills and nine block assists, while Jurgens also contributed 14 kills and six block assists. Overall, the Tartans blocked 15 E-town attacks, with one solo and 28 assists.

In the opener, E-town got 13 kills and nine digs from Smith along with 10 kills from Moran and seven kills, 12 digs by Mowen to take care of two-time defending Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) champion Cabrini in three sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-19).

High just missed out on a 40-assist game with 39 and helped the offense click at a .272 hitting percentage (43 kills-12 errors-114 attempts). Deck had 15 digs and Garner eight kills.

Cabrini's hitters were kept in check with just 29 kills for the match. Jennifer Grenauer and Christine Ingargiola each had eight kills for the Cavaliers (8-4).

Elizabethtown will be back on the court at 11 a.m. Saturday, kicking off the final day of the Classic against Rochester.
