Krause pitches gem to beat New York U.

CLERMONT, Fla. – Keli Krause flustered a New York U. team playing in its inaugural game Saturday, striking out 11 in a two-hitter as the Blue Jays began their final day in Florida with a 7-0 win at the National Training Center.

Krause now owns five career double-figure strikeout games, including two straight after whiffing 10 against Saint Vincent Wednesday. The junior helped her own cause with arm and bat alike in the first inning. She struck out two of the first three batters she faced, sitting down the Violets (0-1) in order. Then, following a Becky Becher leadoff single, Krause doubled to the fence in center scoring Becher for an early lead.

The Blue Jays' (3-6) next batter, Payton Marunich, doubled in Krause and scored when NYU lethargically threw the ball in from right field.

Krause continued to roll along. She struck out the side in the third and carried a perfect game deep into the fifth. With two outs in the inning, NYU's Sage Scheiwiller laced Krause's first pitch to right, but got greedy and was thrown out at home attempting to score the program's first run on an inside the park home run. Scheiwiller's triple was the first hit in team history, however.

By that point, E-town was firmly in control. The Blue Jays added four runs to their lead in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by Krause and Marunich, and bases-loaded walks from Jordan Nowacki and Jessica White.

New York U. came close to breaking up the shutout in the top of the seventh after an error, single and passed ball put runners on second and third with one out. Krause wouldn't allow the Violets their first run, getting Molly Webber to swing through strike three to complete her third career shutout and first since throwing a no-hitter against Juniata last March.

Krause and Marunich finished with identical batting lines, as each was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Becher went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. Laura Tomasetti and Kelsey Brown contributed to the Jays' seven hits with one apiece.
