Rochester downs Blue Jays, 3-1

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Nine kills apiece from Anna Simpson and Mackenzie Garner were not enough to overcome 51 kills and 11 aces by visiting Rochester Friday night in the Blue Jay Classic at Thompson Gymnasium. The Yellowjackets sent Elizabethtown to its fourth straight defeat, 3-1.

Simpson tied her career-high in kills and also provided six digs. With the Blue Jays (3-7) already in a 2-0 hole and looking at a loss, the sophomore from Dover, Delaware, led their third-set resurgence with four kills in a 27-25 victory. It didn't come without its hairy moments, however.

E-town led 24-19 before surrendering six straight points to trail by one and set up set and match point for Rochester (7-3). Freshman Elle Shatto rsponded with a kill and two straight Rochester attacking errors extended the match to a fourth set.

A Shatto kill, Haven Smith ace and the first career kill of Brooke Ricks' career fostered a 5-1 run late in the fourth that put the Jays up 22-20 as they looked to send the match to a deciding fifth set.

This time, the Jackets closed the door. Consecutive kills from Beth Ghyzel set up by Aimee Kohler (match-high 44 assists) were followed by one each from Alexandra Nelligan and Alexandra Goldman, helping Rochester finish on a 5-1 run to put the Blue and Gray away, 25-23.

Rochester won sets one and two handily, 25-19 and 25-16, starting strong with 14 kills and a .212 attack percentage in the first.

Elizabethtown's Garner, the Landmark leader in hitting percentage at .413, was slow to start Friday, with just two kills and four errors on 11 attempts through the first two sets. The sophomore would kick it into gear the rest of the way, connecting for seven kills against just two errors on 17 attempts in the third and fourth sets. She also turned away three Rochester attempts solo and added another pair of block assists.

Shatto had seven kills, Morgan Reiss six and Emily Sexton five. Gabby Anders reached the 30-assist mark to go along with three aces, five digs and a pair of block assists.

Goldman and Nelligan led the visitors with 11 kills each. Alara Kocak had nine and Kohler completed a double-double with 44 assists and 14 digs.

Elizabethtown turns around to play the opening match Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against Rowan, which lost to Messiah 3-0 earlier Friday.
