From Emory University Athletics
Emory University junior outfielder Brett Lake was
named to the D3Baseball.com All-America First Team, and the ABCA
All-America Second Team, while senior catcher Jared
Welch was the Rawlings Gold Glove winning catcher for Division
III.
Lake is the 12th ABCA All-American in the program's
history, and the second D3Baseball.com All-American. He is
the first Eagle to earn all-American honors from either
organization since the 2007 campaign, when pitcher Jason Glushon
was named to the second team of each. Lake is also the first
Emory position player to be named an All-American since Andrew
Pinckney in 2004.
Lake is batting .430 this season with a Division III leading and
program record 64 RBIs. He was named the University Athletic
Association (UAA) Co-Most Valuable Player earlier in the year.
Welch becomes just the second Eagle to earn Rawlings Gold Glove
honors, along with former Emory second baseman Joe Roth in
2007. The Gold Glove is presented annual to the best
defensive player in Division III at each of the nine positions on
the field. Welch held opposing base runners to just 34 steals
on 53 attempts during the season, led the team with five pickoffs,
and committed just two errors for a .994 fielding
percentage.
In addition, four Eagles were named to the ABCA All-South Region
Team with Lake and senior outfielder Brandon
Hannon earning spots on the first team, junior
pitcher Connor Dillman claiming a second team honor, and
junior outfielder Wes Peacock receiving a third team
nod.
