CWRU Bounces Back With 9-2 Win Over Brandeis

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team improved to 2-1 in the Universtiy Athletic Association Championship with a 9-2 victory over Brandeis University on Tuesday afternoon at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium.

Senior pitcher Kevin Johnstone (Placentia, CA/Valencia) scattered 10 hits over seven innings of work, yielding just two runs, did not walk a batter and struck out seven. Senior Rob Winemiller (Twinsburg, OH/University School) retired the Judges' in order in the eighth inning. Freshman Ben Murphy (Jeromesville, OH/Wooster) threw a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth.

Senior second baseman Kerrigan Cain (Hartville, OH/Archbishop Hoban) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Winemiller added two RBI, while sophomore centerfielder Antonio Damiano (Naples, FL/Gulf Coast) and senior catcher Jordan Swisher (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) each scored a pair of runs.

The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Damiano singled and eventually scored on a throwing error and Kerrigan Cain hit a scarifice fly to score senior third baseman Andrew Gronski (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Davidson), who walked.

CWRU added a pair of runs in the third inning. Sophomore rightfielder Aaron Cain (Hartville, OH/Archbishop Hoban) opened the inning with a single and scored on a double by Gronski. Winemiller hit a sacrifice fly to score Gronski, who moved to third on a single by Kerrigan Cain.

Senior leftfielder Will Meador (Columbus, OH/Worthington Kilbourne) made it 5-0 with a two-out double to score Swisher, who singled down the left field line to begin the inning. Meador scored on a single to left field by freshman second baseman Alex Capetillo (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin).

The Spartans added three more runs in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 9-2. Damiano began the inning with a double and scored on a one-out single by Kerrigan Cain. Cain moved to second on a throwing error and scored on consecutive wild pitches. Winemiller singled for his second run batted in, plating Swisher, who reached on a fielder's choice.
