Senior pitcher Kevin Johnstone (Placentia, Calif./Valencia) tossed a complete-game four-hitter to lead the Case Western Reserve baseball team to a 3-2 win over No. 22 Ohio Northern University on Senior Day at Progressive Field.
Johnstone did not give up a hit after the fifth inning and struck out six to earned his fourth win of the season, tying for the team lead in victories.
The Spartans opened the scoring with a run in the second inning. Senior Rob Winemiller (Twinsburg, Ohio/University School) singled and sophomore catcher Eric Eldred (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh) walked. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Winemiller came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore rightfielder Antonio Damiano (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast).
The Polar Bears struck back quickly with two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.
CWRU tied the game in the fourth inning on a two-out error by the shortstop that scored senior designated hitter Jordan Swisher (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland), who opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Elred.
The Spartans scratched out the go-ahead in the seventh inning when Eldred reached on an error by the third baseman and then alertly went to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Damiano when no one covered the bag after the third baseman made the play. Sophomore centerfielder Aaron Cain (Hartville, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) drilled a single to right field to score Eldred for a 3-2 lead.
