From Emory University Athletics
Emory University split a doubleheader with Methodist University
on Saturday afternoon at Chappell Park, falling 20-1 to the
Monarchs in the early game, before bouncing back with a 10-2 win in
the late contest.
The split brings Emory's record to 6-3 on the season, while
Methodist ended the day with a 6-5 record.
Methodist got on the board early against the Eagles in the first
game of the day, taking a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the
third, before an RBI single from senior Brett Lake plated
the Eagles' only run of the game. The Monarchs added three
more runs in the top of the fifth and an addition one in the sixth,
before putting the game out of reach with a nine-run top of the
eighth.
Emory committed six errors in the game, leading to six unearned
runs, and the pitching staff walked an additional 12 batters.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman Rhett Stuart was a
bright spot out of the bullpen for Emory, needed just eight pitches
to sit the Monarchs down in order in the seventh innings.
Senior Connor Dillman took the loss in the game, his
first in his last 13 starts dating back to last season, to fall to
2-1 on the year.
It was a different story for the Eagles in the second game, as
Emory failed to commit and error and walked just two Methodist
batters, en route to the 10-2 victory. Sophomore Jackson
Weeg picked up his third win in as many appearances this
season, scattering eight hits over seven innings, and holding the
Monarchs scoreless over his final five innings of work, after
allowing single runs in the first and second innings. Weeg
finished the game, a 94-pitch effort, with four strikeouts and a
walk.
Sophomore Kyle Monk finished off the strong pitching
effort with a pair of scoreless innings, striking out a pair and
lowering his season ERA to 1.08.
Emory was led by Lake at the plate again, who went three-for-five
with four RBIs, three runs scored and a pair of doubles. He
plated the Eagles' first run of the game with an RBI double in the
bottom of the first, and then drove in two more with a single in
the second, as a part of a five-run frame that gave Emory the lead
in the game for good. Lake added his second RBI double of the
game in the sixth inning.
Lake leads all Eagles this season with a .432 batting average and
10 runs batted in.
Sophomore third baseman Philip Maldari finished the game
three-for-five with a pair of RBIs, while senior first
baseman Jordan Selbach was three-for-four on the
day. Adding two hit games for the Eagles were
juniors David Coble and Dylan Eisner, and
senior Wes Peacock.
