Emory Sweeps Doubleheader to Open Rhodes Classic in Jackson, MS

From Emory University Athletics

The Emory University Baseball Team, ranked second in Division III, earned a pair of come-from-behind wins on Friday night against Millsaps College and 11th-ranked Webster University to improve to 5-0 for the 2015 campaign.

In the early game, Emory utilized a six-run seventh inning to overcome host Millsaps College by a final score of 7-5.  Senior Connor Dillman picked up the win to improve to 2-0, while sophomore Kyle Monk pitched the final three innings to earn his second save of the year.

The Majors took a four-run lead in the third inning of the game, walking three times to load the bases before scoring on a pair of two-RBI singles.  The Eagles cut the lead down to 4-1 with a run in the top of the fifth, when junior Dylan Eisner reached on an error, and later scored on a second error.

In the seventh, the Eagles pulled within a run on a pair of pinch hits, an RBI double from junior Ben Vizvary and a single from sophomore Wilson Morgan.  Senior Wes Peacock would give Emory its first lead of the game with a two-run double, and sophomore Philip Maldari added another run with an RBI single.  Peacock capped off the scoring for the Eagles, coming across the plate on a throw down to second on a steal by Maldari.

Keith Shumaker hit a solo home run in the seventh against Monk, but would be unable to get any closer, despite getting the tying runs on base with two outs on the ninth.  The loss was the first of the season for Millsaps, which dropped to 2-1.

Emory found itself behind 4-2 in the eighth inning of the late contest against Webster, but a two-run home run from Cody Wetmore, the first of his career, tied the game at 4-4, and a fielding error by the Gorloks in the ninth scored Brett Lake to give the Eagles the win.  Sophomore Jackson Weeg earned the win in relief for the Eagles to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Emory jumped out to an early lead in the game, when junior Jeff Ronpirin reached on a catcher's interference to start the game, eventually scoring on a double by Lake.  The Eagles added a second run on a groundout by senior Jordan Selbach in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.

Webster would even the game in the sixth on a two-RBI double from Kyle Uhrich, and take advantage on a pair of Emory errors in the eighth to take a 4-2 lead.  However, Wetmore's dramatic home run in the bottom of the inning would even the score heading into the ninth.

Weeg would work around a leadoff double to pitch a scoreless top of the ninth.  Lake, who finished the game four-for-five, led off the bottom of the frame with a base hit, and it appeared he would be stranded there to send the game into extra innings.  However, on a windy night, a Wetmore fly ball to deep right field was misplayed by the Webster outfielder, allowing Lake to score the game-winning run from first, and give the Eagles the walk-off win.

Emory's 5-0 start is just the sixth in school history, and the first since the 2007 campaign.
